In this comic strip by Matt Groening, the main character, Bongo, is being picked on by another character that is telling him "that everyone in the world hates your guts." Generally, most individuals perceive their selves as being "better than average." We are familiar with our own talents, thoughts, feelings, and emotions more so than anybody else's. This leads to a self-serving bias. In the comic, Bongo reassures himself of his "greatness" until he looks in the mirror. The mirror causes Bongo to be more self-aware of his uncertainty. I chose this particular comic not only because it illistrates the self-serving bias, but also because of the way it incorporates the mirror and Bongo's self-awareness.

People have long considered general theories of motivation, and the question regarding the specific motives that direct and energize our human behavior has undergone tremendous speculation. To this day the question still stands: what is it that humans seek most in life? In an effort to answer this question, Abraham Maslow proposed what he called the hierarchy of needs. Maslow theorizes that human beings are motivated to fulfill this hierarchy, which consists of needs ranging from those that are basic for survival up to those that promote growth and self-enhancement (Kassin 300).

It is important to investigate how people attribute actions and behaviors exhibited, not only by themselves, but also those around them. These attributions shape the way an observer feels and reacts to others, and how people feel about themselves due to their own actions. The correspondence bias (fundamental attribution error) and the self-serving bias are two errors made in attribution by virtually every human being (Baron & Byrne, 2000). Both of these biases can be shown not only in adults, but also children (Guern, 1999). Even sport spectators display these biases when watching their favorite teams (Wann & Schrader, 2000). When the self-serving bias is absent in people's cognitions, they will show the self-defeating attributions. Many people’s perceptions of their own skills, strengths, and weaknesses are different, more some than others. Everyone’s personality is a bit different: Some have very high self-esteem, some are very egotistical, some don’t believe in themselves, etc. Most of the time, my self esteem is usually within a delicate balance of “you aren’t as good as you seem” and “you’re doing fine, relax, you’ll turn out just fine.” However, there are a pair of people that will believe in you no matter what you do: your parents. In conclusion, I have examined and discussed the five unifying themes in social psychology, also known as core social motives. The following five themes has been briefly discussed in this paper; belonging, understanding, controlling, enhancing self, and trusting. Each theme was carefully examined and discussed as it relate to the motivation of human interaction. After examining and briefly discussing each theme, I selected the theme that I believe was the most essential one and discussed it more in details based on the key topic which is social psychology.
Although it is easier to react negatively and feel inadequate and to listen to negative comments from others, you have the power to change your perspective and so will your attitude change. Your new attitude will become contagious and you will have a positive influence on those around you (Richard. n.d.).
Keeping others from discouragement and if you think about it if we don't discourage others they most likely won't discourage us. Especially if we all self-monitor. Getting upset or mad is just as easy to do as getting discouraged. Because we all think that our opinions are correct we all want everyone else self-monitored anyway and when others don't believe in what we do, we get mad. We all have a reason for believing in what we believe self-monitoring.

A person’s self-esteem affects whom he or she chooses to associate with, and how they look at different social groups. This is important because then depending on our level of self-esteem, it essentially tells us how we choose to associate with certain groups and not others, or that we choose to not choose at all. This affects how the population develops relationships with one another. Those who think more highly of themselves (in terms of aspects such as race, socioeconomic status, intelligence, etc.) tend to be very protective of those within their social group, and discriminatory against those who are not, so it is harder as a society to develop relationships unless someone meets certain qualities. This could lead to conflict amongst social groups.
