The word demolition means collisions and hitting two objects together while derby mean a race. These two words put together creates a competitive place for people to enjoy derby cars. Demolition derby drivers come from long family history of drivers. The pasion starts when they are old enough to walk, helping dad at the garage. He can remember their first demolition derby going forty miles per hour, smashing into another car and coming in third. From that moment on, he was hooked. From my experience and research, I know there is a lot of time and effort that goes into building the car, participating in the demo derby, and keeping a driver and spectators safe and these are the three areas of focus on in this paper.

People who have participated in racing for the past century, have never been universally accepted as athletes. The drivers, especially those in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) prove this misconception as incorrect with their intense training and stellar performances. Drivers on social media, assert that they are athletes, contradicting other sports stars who insist that they are not. The drivers in NASCAR and all forms of racing deserve to be given the respect of their fellow athletes in other sports. NASCAR drivers are seasoned athletes because of their training and tough race conditions that they encounter every week on the track.
The international sport of NAASCAR started from the illegal bootlegging of alcohol but it has grown to be one of the most beloved sports ever. It has many fans spread throughout the globe. It has had several rule changes and scandals that has lead it to become the great sport it is today. When Jack Roush decides to have one less race team on the track, he does so not because he doesn’t like the team that is racing, but because fielding a race team is expensive. Mr. Roush has a lot of money, but he is limited to the number of teams he can put on the track. Race fans make choices too. We choose which drivers we will support, which manufacturers we will back, what races to attend in person, and how many races to watch on television. All of these choices are made because we don’t have the time, money or opportunity to watch every race, travel to every track, or back every driver. Therefore, we have to choose.

Going to the track is a hassle versus the get set, ready, go drag race down the street. Simply, street racing is nearby and does not disturb anyone as the contest usually takes place in the dead of the night or in the wee hours of the morning. Secondly, legal racing at a circuit track costs hundreds of dollars. Drag strips are shorter, most commonly a quarter of a mile, than the longer circuit tracks, but the entrance fee is about twenty dollars, which adds up over repeated visits. On the other hand, street racing is free and in 20 seconds, a winner emerges from the duo. Lastly, racing at a track puts enormous stress on a car. By driving fast for extended periods on a track, consider the brakes and tires shot since both will need replacement from tracking over 200 miles per hour. Perhaps the most action packed racing event is NASCAR, otherwise known as “National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing”, “Non-Athletic Sport Created by Alcohol and Rednecks”, and “Not A Sport Circles Are Round”. This favorite pastime is appreciated by all of the sweet-tea loving, sunburnt necks in the south.

Physics are an important part of every sports and racing car design. The stylish curves and ground effects on sports cars are usually there not just for form but function as well allowing you to go speeds over 140 mph in most serious sports cars and remain on the road and in reasonable control.

Tires work by having a high coefficient of friction. Some slicks have a friction coefficient grater then 1! (Physics of Racing) Typical normal street tires have coefficient of about .5 to .6 . In physics we learned that friction was equal to mew times the normal force. Since race cars are typical much lighter then normal cars, they use tricks to increase the downward force on the tires. Some drag tires run really low pressure, other drag cars tune the car to lift the front wheels to put all the weight on the rear tires. The feeling you get from winning is a combination between endorphins, dopamine, and adrenaline. This intern fuels the feeling we as “gear heads” crave and enjoy so much. Plus, it gives us bragging rights amongst our fellow car enthusiasts. Every person at the track has a drive for these bragging rights, and it’s this competitiveness that only fuels the fire for our addiction. Being competitive, is a defining quality for any athlete or anyone in a sport. It’s in a “racers DNA”, we as car enthusiasts are stuck on the idea of improving our cars to beat everyone and anyone that lines up next to us on the track. Even if we lose, we will be constantly thinking about making the proper adjustments to our cars and come back better and faster. Or, it may not even be at a track but also a car
