In terms of Cutty’s “job” of rounding up students who do not attend school to take into school for one day, speaks to a larger issue. In order for the Middle School to receive their minimum attendance numbers, in order to receive additional funding, each student who does not attend school is required to attend school one day in January and one day in February. The children seem well educated in this system, and probably see the requirement enforced by the school to only attend two days of school, as just another thing which shows that the system and the adults within it care little about them and their education. I think the truant students probably feel as if no one truly cares or believes that they are capable of having any type of future other than one of crime and violence. How are the students supposed to feel hopeful for the future, when they are constantly bombarded with the message that people see no hope for them.
I believe that the school is doing this because they have no other options. The rounding up of truant students, and only

making them attend two days of school is the caused by the schools being unstaffed and underfunded, and they do not have the time or resources to try to ensure that the students who do not want to attend school attend school. Instead the school has chosen to try to obtain enough funding in order to try to provide the best education they can with their resources, for the students who are at the school. I think the school got to this point due to the lack of concern for inner-city schools, which results in the schools being disregarded, and results in a lack of oversight and funding. As terrible as this system is, it simply speaks to a society which sees little point in trying to help the very at risk children, but rather chooses to prosecute when and if they engage in criminal activities. This is not a reflection of the schools but rather a form of government, which Instead of working on preventing a future community of citizens who feel hopeless, forgotten, and whom are struggling to survive, they choose to deal with the aftermath of these forgotten students. One of the scenes, which show the everyday struggles of the students, takes place where Colvin is walking through the school with the female teacher, where she describes how the students act and perceive the days of the school week. This educator describes how the best day of the school is Wednesday, because it is the farthest away from the weekend, and how Monday is Angry, Tuesday can be either be angry or good, Thursday is Bad, Thursday they feel the weekend coming, and Friday is bad again. I think that what this teacher meant was that the farther they are away from their home lives and lives outside of school the happier and more secure they feel.
Unlike many students who are excited about the weekend on Friday, and burnt out by Wednesday, these students appear to be the opposite. Most likely these students have home lives, which are filled with neglect, violence, and fear, and school provides a sense of sanctuary for them. I think that these students appreciate the structure and teacher involvement in school, since it is most likely the place where they receive the most guidance and are treated like the children they are. Overall, I think that being at school allows for the students to be children where their lives outside of school require them to be mature beyond their years. The structure of school provides security for these students, a security which they do not most likely get outside of
school. For students such as Dukie and Michael they are on their own when they are outside of the school walls. Both boys live with adults engulfed in their own addiction, and as of such they ignore, and in Dukie’s case steal from their children. Michael is also forced to be the parent in his household, which is a great cause of stress. For both Dukie and Michael by being at school they are in a place where they can trust adults, and not be forced to take on roles beyond their years. In Addition, school is the only place where these boys have strong adults who have their best interest in mind (for the most part) and the boys are aware of this, which is why they can begin to let their guard down on Wednesday, but have to build it back up come Friday. I believe that the girl reacted so strongly to Prez giving her the old pencil because she feels neglected and forgotten. I believe that her outburst was not because of the pencil, but that she is tired of struggling, and probably compare herself to those she sees as having more. This girl probably has never felt like others have provided for her, and when they do it is the bare minimum. I think it escalated so quickly because all of those feeling of being ignored and unimportant presented themselves. Also, I think the way in which Prez handed her the pencil, made her think that he saw it as a hand out, and that the other students would judge and laugh at her not having school supplies. Moreover, I think the fight previously was still fresh on everyone’s mind and she was probably reacting to her feeling surrounding that. One thing, which I believe, speaks to Michael and Namond’s future is not what they did to initially get into trouble but what they did afterwards. Furthermore, both Michael and Namond got in trouble due to their actions going against, Prez’s new classroom system he implemented in order to gain control and earn respect from his students. The new incentives system in which Prez created made it so that students who acted up or did not do their work would receive detention, and that students who did their work and behaved would receive stickers, in which the four student with thee most stickers at the end of the week would get a prize, and those students would be entered into a drawing at the end of the month for a even greater earned prize. Michael initially got into trouble for not completing his work in class, and then proceeded to get into deeper trouble when he did not attend detention. While, what caused Michael to get into trouble was not violent outlandish his reaction was troubling, and indicated a greater cause for concern. Due to the fact that Michael is responsible for his younger brother, he was unable to attend detention. Instead of going to Prez and explaining why he was unable to attend, his friends took it upon themselves to explain his situation, as to save him from further trouble. Even when Prez confronts Michael about this and explains to him that he needs to tell him why he cant finish his work or go to detention, Michael seems polite, yet unresponsive and dismissive. I think that Michael already has developed the mindset where he is alone in the world and that no body except for he himself can help himself. While this is not unexpected for someone who grew up the way Michael did, even Randy who grew up in the foster system, and Dukie who grew up with adults who stole from and exploited him trust Prez enough to trust Prez enough to explain to him Michael’s situation. Michael seems to have no faith in those who in positions of law abiding authority. Unlike Michael, whose infraction was minor and non aggressive, Namond got in much more serious trouble than Michael, due to an abrasive and disrespectful interaction with Prez which took place during class. The interaction began when Prez told Namond and a few other students to get away from the window, when a fellow teacher was shaking the bushes for contraband. Namond responded to Prez by verbally attacking him and telling him that he should get out his stick and beat him, and that he knows he wants to do so. Prez responded by giving him detention and than yelling at him to get out of class, in which Namond responded with the remark about how he knew Prez wanted to beat him. Once he left the classroom he proceeded to swear at the researcher with Colvin, but when he saw the woman professor was present his demeanor quickly changed, and he was sent to the office. While this interaction clearly showed how angry and disrespectful Namond could be, how he chose to engage with Prez afterwards, spoke more to whom he actually is. Just prior to Dukie and Randy speaking to Perez about Michael, Namond went into Prez’s classroom and apologized to him, and told him about how his anger gets the best of him sometimes and that he does not mean to do what he does. The fact that Namond apologized to Prez while opening up to him, and did so in front of Dukie and Randy, shows that he cares about the relationship he has with Prez and how Prez sees him. Also, Namond showed that he cared about Prez’s feeling and had a conscience since he appeared to apologize to Prez without any other motives than to simply make amends. This is because it did not seem like the female teacher had forced Namond to apologize, and he had already been suspended, so their appeared to be no anterior motives behind his actions. I feel like suspension was not the appropriate course of action for Namond, as it sends him the message that he has been given up on. When Prez kicked Namond out of his class the look on Namond’s face appeared to be one of genuine hurt, which he quickly covered up with anger and force. I really think that Namond has the best chance of making it out of the streets, because all of his actions appear to be the result of who he believes others expect him to be. Moreover, I think that underneath all of the bravado and trash talk, is a thirteen year-old child who is smart, scared, and does not want to hurt others and who actually wants structure and guidance. While I do not think that Prez should have caved in and let detention out early, I think his understanding and soft approach will most likely help him form a better relationship with his students than some of the other teachers, who the students seem to almost fear. I think that the idea behind the incentive program was a very good idea and would probably benefit the students within and outside of the classroom. By providing an understanding environment for the students, I feel like Prez could help his students learn to trust those they otherwise would have not. However, I do think that Prez needs to stick behind his punishments, but I do think by allowing students to come to him with their problems he is strengthening his relationship with them. I do think ideally that instead of kicking Namond out of class he should have spoken to him outside of class to find out what was going on, but I think that it was not wrong of Prez to kick him out of class.

“They laugh at me because I’m different; I laugh at them because they’re all the same” Kurt Cobain once said. However, would it be a good choice to be different and accept going to college in an earlier age instead of attending to a normal high school? Of course this has been greatly disputed; due to the fact that many students have a hard time deciding which option is more convenient and would actually lead them to accomplish their goals. Even though there are many early college schools that would offer an Associate’s degree without having to pay anything, there is people that would prefer to pay their career by themselves and have a normal life as most high scholars do without having to worry that much. Of course that going earlier to college would be challenging but it can bring students better opportunities in life, and also help them mature more rapidly so they could be able to understand what life is in reality.
One of the hot topics of debate going on in the U.S. today that presidential candidates are talking about is college tuition. Some have revealed their proposals to American citizens on how they would tackle the issue of tuition. The question is which one of the many proposals will work and limit the amount of people who don’t go to college and give them a reason to go. The tuition issue is not a case by case problem, but a national problem. While there are some who have the opportunity to attend college others are not as fortunate. But everyone can have a part in shaping the future for many generations to come. The objective is to find a way to make what some would call “college free”to everyone. How were we able to find a way to make public
When one thinks back to all the school years between kindergarten and high school, they will not remember the name of every teacher they have ever had without hard thought. There are always going to be the teachers that stood out from all the rest for one reason; they connected with their students. When asked about school, students will not reply with an undoubted love for all the time spent going through it. It is simply something we must all go through to get on with our lives and be an active member of society. I get the strangest looks from my peers when I say I like school. Now obviously, I have not loved every second spent behind a desk or all the time required to be spent with every teacher, but overall I do enjoy school because of the
In “Is college worth it?” the writer discusses which colleges and degrees will be better for their price and how the careers from these degrees will help pay off college debt. Throughout the article it is discussed how colleges that have lower scores and ranking will not offer financial help to students. To be able to pay off college debt, it is better to go to a college with higher scores. Since the cost of tuition is rising, more people are in need of financial aid, and to pay off this debt quicker, people are needing a career to do so. In order to have a career that makes a lot of money and pay off student loans, you need to get a degree that is in a field with a high demand.
A challenge that all seniors face at the end of their high school career is the decision that will shape the rest of their future. Will it be Harvard, Ivy Tech, or a job at the nearest fast food joint? Of course, there is nothing wrong with not going to college, but for the people of society who plan to marry and have at least three children, it is almost essential. After making this decision, the seniors who choose to attend college must then decide which one. Campus size, housing, nearby activities, and available degrees and study programs are all important traits to consider when searching for the perfect college.
Students are deprived from there leaning do to the tardy policy. A policy that is unfair this tardy policy makes students serve a 30 min detention if there even a second late to class and after multiple absences or tardies you can face legal consequences. There's many reasons why students may be late for example students need to take the city buss, bikes ,cars to school but there's always traffic so sometimes it's not the students fault , students shouldn't be given a 30 minute detention for being a couple of minutes late.
School allows many opportunities to grow as a person, and show your personality. Within class I am always an active participant, I always add my input in discussion, and work to answers questions. I have always maintained good grades I was placed in advanced courses beginning in fourth grade and within all 3 years of highschool I have earned a weighted
Now its been 2 months since my suspension and I’m back now from my punishment. Tardiest have been the worst rule at Merced High School. I still think that the tardy policy is a ridicules rules there are. There is no way that someone is going to be on he or she’s desk when the bell rings, I’m saying this from experience. I haven’t been just shot on the ear, I’ve been shot on my arm, attacked by a bear, and electrocuted by the power lines. What kind of school would be doing this to their students and the future of America this not the way to be teach...
In the article written by Rodney K.Smith where he puts forward a clear argument about “Yes, a College Education is Worth the Cost. There are more opportunities and doors open for those with higher education compared to those without. Higher education allows people to live in better neighborhoods; it brings financial security and stability. ”. Financially secured people not only are able to afford extracurricular activities for their kids, such as sports, music lessons, art, dancing etc, it also allows to have intellectual knowledge in general as well as better nutrition and medical care compared to uneducated people. A college education is worth the cost and investment of the students’ time.
People have very different reasons on why going to college and getting an education is important for them. Some people go to college because that is what is expected of them, and others go because they have nothing else better to do. However, I am interested in going to college and obtaining a good education because it will benefit my family, my country, and me.
School is supposed to be a place where a parent can easily let their child go, and not fear that something bad is going to happen to them. Although many things can go wrong when practicing magic, and living in a world with He -Who- Must- Not- Be- Named Harry loved it there, and he couldn’t wait to go back. “He missed Hogwarts so much it was like having a constant stomach ache.” (3) At Hogwarts, he knows the schedule, he knows how things work, and from knowing what to expect he feels safe there. He’s surrounded by friends and people he knows care about him. Also, to Harry, Hogwarts is a place of comfort and safety because it is where he can practice what he is passionate about. In this way, I believe the Muggle school’s and Hogwarts are alike, for they both provide a great sense of comfort and safety to their students. Similarly, like Harry I sense comfort and safety when I am at school. I know what is expected of me, I know that I have a support system of people around me, and I know that eventually this will lead me to doing something that I am extremely passionate
Every parent is faced with the decision of whether or not to home school their child. While some families may find home schooling as being very helpful and beneficial to their child’s education, others may find that it is crucial their child be sent to a normal school. Some parents are hesitant to send their children to public school because of crime and lack of discipline and also because they fear that the quality of education is declining. Parents may also feel that sending their child to school will aid in their social development. Home schooling has both advantages and disadvantages which aid parents in this difficult decision.
At Millikan, if you arrive after 8:10, you go straight to OCS and do not get to class and get an after school detention if you are late more than three times. Again I state the fact that according to deseretnews.com, Students who don't go to class, have a less likely chance of graduating high school because they don't get to learn. This is proof that it is too harsh because if we are sent away from class for an hour for missing 10 minutes we can't even learn, and end up getting make up work for that day which piles up. Now, we do tardy sweeps at Millikan and whomever gets caught will not go to class even if you are 30 seconds late. This is unfair because some people have a lot of make-up work with teachers across the campus.
At the beginning of one’s journey of gaining more knowledge, most children don’t mind school, for it is a change of environment for them. The majority of elementary school adolescents even enjoy school to some degree. As time wears on, we usually, and sadly, begin to see a change of heart. Children become fatigued from school and therefore don’t take pleasure in going anymore. Maybe their teachers didn’t teach them in the way that they learn most efficiently, or maybe students just become bored with the whole “school scene” itself. Whatever the case, it is apparent that by the time they reach high school, their interest for learning alone has died out.
