Not until we lose sight of conventional shores by discovering our inner darkness, do we find the courage to break free of the façade society has created. “North Coast Town” and “Flames and Dangling Wire” by Robert Gray question the cultural impact of perceived “progress”, while Roald Dahl’s post WW2 short story “Genesis and Catastrophe” forces us to rediscover our inner darkness, re-evaluate our personal morals and our inner strength to challenge society and make our own discoveries. “Flames and Dangling Wire” is a didactic poem in which Gray discovers and warns the reader about the consequences of our modern love of materialism.
In his poem, “Prometheus,” Emery George’s speaker closely aligns himself with the main character to describe his theft of fire and its effects on the story of humankind. Even though the narrator speaks in third person, he knows Prometheus’s thoughts and is very in-tune with his experience suggesting that perhaps Prometheus is actually the speaker. His conversational and easy to understand voice goes from cheeky in the first stanza to serious in the second as the horrific consequences of Prometheus’s actions, the bombing of two cities, become apparent. George’s use of enjambment, punctuation, and diction creates continuity throughout the poem in order to highlight the interconnectedness of all things and ultimately pose questions about inevitability and fate.
In Susan Mitchell’s poem “The Dead”, the speaker describes the life of a dead person to show that those we lose aren’t truly gone. The poem starts out talking about what dead people do in their afterlife, starting to form a picture in the reader’s head. Towards the middle, she starts using personal connections and memories associated with what the dead are doing. This shows us that they will always be there to remind us of memories shared together. At the end of the poem, the reader shows us that she is talking about someone who has passed that was close to her in her childhood. Perhaps Mitchell wrote this trying to get over the loss of a loved one, showing that they will never be forgotten. The poem has a

Rain is compared to violence because sometimes rain is thick and powerful just like violence. Fog instead avoid people from seeing far away. Rain and fog combined are compared to violence because violence is unexpected just like fog making people not able to see what is yet to come, and as well it is powerful just like thick rain. At the same time “bodies were enslaved by a tenacious gravity” meaning that some people were enslaved, separated from the rest of the World. The reader gets a vivid image of a huge industrial city built in “valleys huge of Tartarus”(4). This reference to Tartarus is saying that the city is virtually in a hell-like area. The image of hell is further exemplified by the line “A flaming terrible and bright”(12), which conjures up thoughts of fire and heat. The reference to hell and flames adds to the theme because it brings to light the idea of destruction and nature burning away. Similar to what happens when there is a forest fire. The fire is not just coming out of nowhere though, it is coming “from out a thousand furnace doors”(16), which furthers the idea of industrialization. There are no longer humans in this city which is evident because when talking about the beings in the city Lampman wrote “They are not flesh, they are not bone,/ They see not with the human eye”(33-34). This part of the poem is important because if there are no more humans left it is easy to assume that the only driving force of these “Flit figures that with clanking hands”(31) is work. So, in the beginning of the story, the fire symbolized civilization and hope. However, this was changed when Jack confiscated the fire from Ralph's tribe and used it to help them do more wrongdoings. He set the jungle into fire so that Ralph can burn out. This changed the symbolism of the fire from civilization and hope to evil, savagery, and calamity. However, soon something ironic happened.
The images drawn in this poem are so graphic that it could make readers feel sick. I will discuss the similarities by which these poems explore themes of death and violence through the language, structure and imagery used. In some of the poems I will explore the characters’ motivation for targeting their anger and need to kill towards individuals they know personally whereas others take out their frustration on innocent strangers. On the other hand, the remaining poems I will consider view death in a completely different way by exploring the raw emotions that come with losing a loved one.
Progress is in the eye of the beholder. Throughout the years society has forced nature out of its life and has instead adopted a new mechanical and industrialized lifestyle. Technology may be deemed as progress by some, where it is thought of as a positive advancement for mankind. Yet technology can also be a hindrance for society, by imposing itself on society and emptying the meaning out of life. In “Autobiography at an Air-Station,” Philip Larkin conveys his distaste of how society has denounced nature. By employing an ironic tone in the sonnet, Larkin comments on the significance of the sonnet in relation to industrial life. Life has become ironic because it is no longer a natural life that society leads, but a fabricated life. Through his use of rhyme and meter, the extended metaphor comparing the air-station to life, imagery, and diction, Larkin reflects on what life has come to be: a deviation from the intrinsic.
“Fire and Ice” is a poem that paints a bleak picture of the future in which there are two paths, fire and ice, that both lead to the end of the world. Frost uses language throughout the poem that appears to be simple, but is actually very effective at communicating deeper, insightful meanings. He connects fire and ice to desire and hate and creates multiple levels of complexity. For example, the simple passage “Some say the world will end in fire, / Some say in ice.” (“Fire and Ice” 1-2) introduces the two main symbols in the poem, but, at the same time, pulls the reader in because desire and hate are so personal and such a significant part of human nature. After the symbols are presented, the narrator involves himself or herself in the poem by saying “From what I’ve tasted of desire / I hold with those who favor fire.” (“Fire and Ice” 3-4). A clear decision is made here in favor of fire, implying that the narrator favors desire. Frost believes that the world will eventually be destroyed by destructive and negative human traits: desire, greed, and jealousy. Yet in Frost’s mind, these traits are still preferable to hate. The Theme of Death in Poetry Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson are two Modern American Poets who consistently wrote about the theme of death. While there are some comparisons between the two poets, when it comes to death as a theme, their writing styles were quite different. Robert Frost’s poem, “Home Burial,” and Emily Dickinson’s poems, “I felt a Funeral in my Brain,” and “I died for Beauty,” are three poems concerning death. While the theme is constant there are differences as well as similarities between the poets and their poems. The obvious comparison between the three poems is the theme of death.
Death is a prevalent theme in the poetry of both Sylvia Plath and Emily Dickinson. They both examine death from varied angles. There are many similarities as well as differences in the representation of this theme in their poetry. Plath views death as a sinister and intimidating end, while Dickinson depicts death with the endearment of romantic attraction. In the poetry of Plath death is depicted traditionally, while Dickinson attributes some mysticism to the end of life.
