In his poem, “Prometheus,” Emery George’s speaker closely aligns himself with the main character to describe his theft of fire and its effects on the story of humankind. Even though the narrator speaks in third person, he knows Prometheus’s thoughts and is very in-tune with his experience suggesting that perhaps Prometheus is actually the speaker. His conversational and easy to understand voice goes from cheeky in the first stanza to serious in the second as the horrific consequences of Prometheus’s actions, the bombing of two cities, become apparent. George’s use of enjambment, punctuation, and diction creates continuity throughout the poem in order to highlight the interconnectedness of all things and ultimately pose questions about inevitability and fate. The poem starts with an audacious statement: “He fired God” (George line 1). From the very beginning, the speaker exudes confidence, pride, and sass that captivate the reader. The entire first stanza is full of this kind of cheekiness and word play. Instead of boringly stating that Prometheus stole fire from Olympus and gave it to the humans, the speaker metaphorically says that Prometheus “plagiarized the fire, / and published all the flames in the hottest how-to / book of the season” (1-3). This analogy nods to George’s literary practice and the “how-to book” concept provides a convenient way of describing all the things Prometheus can teach humans to do with fire such as cooking and making armor. Allusions to the Greek Myth of Prometheus allow insightful readers to withhold a better understanding of the story of Prometheus. The reader gets a vivid image of a huge industrial city built in “valleys huge of Tartarus”(4). This reference to Tartarus is saying that the city is virtually in a hell-like area. The image of hell is further exemplified by the line “A flaming terrible and bright”(12), which conjures up thoughts of fire and heat. The reference to hell and flames adds to the theme because it brings to light the idea of destruction and nature burning away. Similar to what happens when there is a forest fire. The fire is not just coming out of nowhere though, it is coming “from out a thousand furnace doors”(16), which furthers the idea of industrialization. There are no longer humans in this city which is evident because when talking about the beings in the city Lampman wrote “They are not flesh, they are not bone,/ They see not with the human eye”(33-34). This part of the poem is important because if there are no more humans left it is easy to assume that the only driving force of these “Flit figures that with clanking hands”(31) is work. Prometheus was a figure in Greek mythology who created the conflict between mankind and the God’s. Prometheus one day decided to steal fire from the sun and give it to the people for their advantage. Mankind then had the ability to create tools and weapons. Prometheus was then punished by the God’s and was chained to a rock where he was visited by an eagle that ate from his liver. His liver would regenerate daily so that he never died. Prometheus also supposedly created and animated mankind from clay. He is often referred to as the “plasticator since he created man from clay.” These two myths were combined to suggest that Prometheus stole the fire and fashioned mankind from clay.
“You send these winged creatures from the east of Greece to feast off of my liver?” Prometheus looks to the dank mountain walls nestled inside of the Caucasus Mountains and shouts, “Zeus, you will not kill me!” He hangs his head slightly, and watches as the two carnivorous scavengers stand in front of him flapping their broad wings as their white-colored heads bob back and forth, readying themselves to once again peck at his tattered, exposed, reddish-brown organ.Thestale metallic smell of iron wafts under Prometheus’ nose. The rightside of his naked body is stained red as blood trickles from thepuncture wounds made by his yellow beaked tormentors.
