For the past century, technology has evolved so quickly that it is difficult to tell just how far technology will go within a given year. Every year new phones, cars, televisions, and computers are put on the market with huge leaps and bounds in the technological aspects. They tend to have better storage space for information, better GPS systems, or better imaging software. Even looking at aspects of film, animation, and music, technology has created new ways to perfect those crafts. Tablets that allow for easier hand drawn animations, drones that can create scenes with film, and better microphones for smoother sound with music. Nintendo hoped to renew their sales of games in America with their new console. However at that time, America was untrustworthy of another gaming console. Nintendo decided to create the console as a toy rather than a gaming system and came up with gimmicks that made it stand out in the American market. The console was called the Nintendo Entertainment System, or the NES for short, debuted in 1985 in America and was met with resounding success. Because of their dedication to their craft Nintendo revived the gaming market in America and paved the way for the future of gaming. During the NES’s run several gaming icons were founded and upheld. Link from the Legend of Zelda, Samus from Metroid, and Mega Man from MegaMan were all invented during this time. After this point in gaming’s history the different eras of consoles would come to be known as the generations of consoles. It is truly a testament to how far human’s technological prowess has come when a game that was a full game in 1982 for the Atari 2600 gets put into a game as a small level in a much bigger game. As said by Justin Verlander, “For me, seeing the progression of video games and consoles - whether it be PlayStation, Xbox, or whatever - I think just seeing how good they've gotten from the days when I first started playing is just amazing.
The history of video games can teach us, more so than any other technological advancement, that humans are capable of creating unique and interesting things. It has become an art form worthy of our attention and is extremely important to our way of life.
