If I gave you a can of rat poison, would you drink it? What if I told you that every time you popped open a can of diet soda, that’s what you would be drinking? I’m sure some of you in here really enjoy diet soda, but still drink it because you don’t think the ingredients in the soda will ever harm you. Diet soda has many different ingredients which include some that are very bad for your health and can lead to death. Today we are all going to look at dangerous ingredients that are in diet soda, some of the side effects diet soda will cause, and some diseases and complications you may develop.
First, the main ingredients in diet soda, and why they are so harmful. The main ingredients that are in diet soda are aspartame and saccharin. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, and it is a protein produced from aspartic acid. Aspartame is used in any different foods and drinks because it is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, so that means much less of it can be used to give the same amount of sweetness. When aspartame is digested, it breaks down into aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol. These components are also used in a selection of foods such as milk, meat, dried beans, fruits and vegetables, but much greater amounts are used in diet soda. Another reason Aspartame is terrible for you is that when Aspartame gets to a certain temperature it is known as rat poison. Also, 10% of aspartame is made up of methyl ester bond which includes methanol. After a few hours of ingesting aspartame, this methanol is released from the aspartame and begins roaming through the body through the blood. After the methyl ester is unglued it separates into wood alcohol. The conflict with this methanol is that it easily passes through your blood-...

...cals in saccharin can easily run through to the placenta and then to the unborn baby. It is very harmful to the baby, and when the baby is born it may cause muscle dysfunction to it. Also mothers that breastfeed should not drink saccharin because it can be passed from the mother to the baby through the milk.
I have talked about some of the harmful ingredients in Diet soda, some of the side effects in diet soda, and some major diseases and complication that are in Aspartame and Saccharin. Although many people think diet soda is better for you than regular soda, it actually has harmful ingredients in it that can lead to serious health problems and death. You also might think that Diet soda is going to make you lose weight, but trust me, it wont. The information I presented today shows you why you need to stop drinking diet soda forever, and just drink water.
Overall, the consumption of aspartame is not so beneficial. The chemical component of aspartame may be broken down to chemical substances that are potentially harmful and may lead to symptoms such as headaches, vision impairment, hearing loss, memory loss, fatigue, dizziness, and eventually brain tumors. The sweetener may have been developed to lower the amount of calories and be a sugar substitute, but its creation has only produced medical attention. The consumption of aspartame should be limited or not be consumed at all in order to prevent symptoms from occurring. The creation of aspartame may not be so sweet after all.
It is also found in Diet Coke and other diet sodas. Aspartame is a neurotoxin, i.e., a drug that destroys the brain and nervous system. The molecule has three components: aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol. Has been shown that aspartic acid causes brain lesions in animal experiments.
This article is talking about a mayor banning beverages larger than 16 oz. at restaurants, sports arenas and movie theaters. The reason this mayor wants to ban large sodas is because he is afraid for all of New York’s health. That’s a good thing because a lot of us don’t know what we drink and eat most of the time. We just eat our food we don’t even bother to look what’s really in side such as calories, fats and oils in our food. This Mayor is doing New York a huge favor by banning large sodas. He’s helping everyone in New York about their health but people of New York doesn’t see that. There are people who are trying to not let him pass this law because some of them probably drink 16 oz. every day of once a week or twice a week or even more.
We already know soda is bad for you but why is it as bad as everyone says it is? A single can of soda contains the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar(Ten). Most Americans consume fifty-six gallons of soda alone in just a year. Now think about how many sodas it would take to make a gallon and how much sugar is in one soda. I would try telling you something good about soda but there is absolutely nothing good about it, because it has no positives.
Diet Coke has caffeine and acidity, but these qualities of Diet Coke does not affect the geyser. According to Mental Floss (2013, [online]), “You’ll sometimes read that the acidity of the soda is a major factor in the resulting geyser. This is not the case. In fact, the level of the acidity in the Diet Coke before and after the Mentos geyser does not change.” Also, Mental Floss states that caffeine is often cited as something that will increase the explosive reaction with the soda, this is not the case (2013, [online]). The only reason the Diet Coke, or any other soda, explodes is because of carbon dioxide! “Every
Saccharin is said to be one of the oldest artificial sugars, it was discovered around 1878 in the Johns Hopkins University laboratory by chemist Constantine Fahlberg when he was working on Ira Remsen’s lab among Remsen’s assistants. The sugar was first used by Constantine himself when he accidentally spilled some of the chemical on his hand and later decided to try it with his dinner, when he realized it tasted quite sweet. Both Remsen and Fahlberg later introduced the synthetic sugar to the public in February of 1879 saying Saccharin was “even sweeter than cane sugar”. Some of the many benefits of Saccharin are that Saccharin is able to blend with other sweeteners to recompense for each sweetener’s weaknesses. Also Saccharin is very helpful to people with diabetes because it goes directly through the digestive system without being broken down. Saccharin also easily dissolves in beverages just like regular table sugar. Sacchari...
Some prefer diet soda because it doesn’t leave residue on their teeth. This is because diet soda gets it’s flavoring from artificial sweeteners, which is not natural sugar, and bacteria in your mouth needs sugar to grow. Although diet soda may not contain sugar, it does have acid, and over time this acid can strip the enamel from your teeth and leave them more vulnerable to cavities from other sugary
In the past couple years people all around the nation, whether it's in New York City or an 8th Grade classroom in Michigan, people have been pressed with the question, whether the New York Soda Ban, is a good thing, improving health, or if there is a larger issue. Is this decision showing evidence of the Government interfering with our basic civil liberties?
The United States believes soda is crippling children’s health, causing school officials to ban the sale of these sugary drinks from schools. Although soda causes health problems, such as diabetes and obesity, banning soda from schools will not improve children’s overall health. Soda is not the primary culprit of childhood obesity or diabetes; the foods available in schools are equally as detrimental to a child’s health. To see a change in student 's diets, school officials should not only reform soda, but the food as well. Schools should feel compelled to make resources available to educate our kids on clean eating, as proper information would help to improve dietary choices. Even though childhood obesity and other health problems are steadily increasing, soda is not to blame and
There are plenty of sugary soft drinks in the market today. Sugary soft drinks are included as drinks defined by the US Department of Agriculture and the US Department of Health and Human Services in their Dietary Guidelines for Americans as “sugar-sweetened beverages” that contain different types of sugars that contribute calories. Examples of these are lemonade, sports drinks, energy drinks, carbonated sodas and sweetened teas and coffees (Marrow,2011).
He said, "My doctor gives it to me every day... Anybody who says saccharin is injurious to health is an idiot"(Corcoran 12). Saccharin survived the onslaught for another forty years. It wasn't until the bittersweet chemical hit the mainstream consumer market in such things as diet sodas, pharmaceuticals, and chewing gum that it came under fire again. Scientists suggested that saccharin might be a carcinogen in 1951.
An example is the Aspartame found in diet soda. Focusing on diet soda, it is shown that it is linked to even more diseases and causes more side effects than regular soda. Furthermore, “Numerous studies over the past several years have reported links between diet soda and weight gain, diabetes, heart problems, and other health issues. Most recently, headlines sounded alarms about a higher chance of dementia and stroke among diet soda drinkers” (Is Drinking…). The aspartame that is used in the diet soda is the main culprit for diet sodas effects. In fact, “Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious, including seizures and death” (Aspartame…). Aspartame is a man-made chemical that is made up of aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. With, aspartic acid making up 40%, phenylalanine making up 50%, and methanol making up 10%. Taking in consideration the phenylalanine in diet soda,” Excessive levels of phenylalanine in the brain can cause the levels of serotonin in the brain to decrease, leading to emotional disorders such as depression” (Aspartame…). With the methanol, that is found in aspartame, it “…breaks down into formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin… With a recommended limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit” (Aspartame…). The effects of methanol are caused by the formaldehyde. “Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication and causes birth defects” (Aspartame…). Overall it is shown that the aspartame that is found in diet soda is linked to a number of diseases
... in food in the cafeteria lead to clogging the arteries that eventually lead to heart diseases (Ardis). Nevertheless, artificial sweeteners have not been tested in humans and show kids they are healthier, rather than real sugar and real sweeteners, when in reality they contain ingredients that can cause cancer.
Common Claims Aspartame causes Cancer: A couple studies on animals have shown that aspartame may cause cancer, however these have been condemned for their inadequate methods and irrelevance to humans. Another study found a small connection between aspartame and certain types of cancer, however this was only found in males. Furthermore, there are scientific studies from around the world that have shown that Aspartame is not linked to cancer or brain
Have you ever thought how much soda you consume and how bad it can be for you? Many people will drink soda instead of water, simply because it tastes better. The government should limit the intake of sugary beverages because it can lead to many different problems such as heart disease, obesity, and overall it is an unhealthy life-style. “The average person consumes almost 100lbs of sugar a year, with the single biggest source being soda.” A sugary beverage occasionally would be ok, but drinking it every day would cause problems for you overtime. People drink, more soda than they do water. People should be consuming at least eight 8-ounce glasses a day. Mostly no one will drink that amount of water a day. In today’s society, it can be easy to grab a soda for one dollar and carry on. They may taste better but they are not better for your health. “Sugary drinks include soda, fruit punch, lemonade, and other “aides” sweetened powdered drinks, and sports energy drinks.”
