Introduction Today, America is faced with many issues as a society. From environmental concerns, to sexual and racial equality, to common health fears, our issues as a whole appear to be spread across a wide shield of worries. It seems like generational issues would be miniscule compared to these overarching problems, however generational issues in American work settings are actually rapidly becoming a growing concern for many companies and organizations, including this one. These generational issues come from a vast range of differences in areas including work professional attitudes, employer loyalty, attitudes regarding respect, technology, and the work and home life balance. Technology is a major factor that affects the strengths and weaknesses of every generation. Millennials familiarity and strength in using new technologies is both helpful and harmful in the workplace. Through the use of technology, this generation is using their skills on the Internet and social media to become more politically engaged. (Doerr, 2014) Social Media gives young people access to news stories and controversial issues in the world instantly, increasing their awareness and generating concern for community and global challenges such as war and poverty. (Crappell, 2012) In contrast, there has been a measured increase in narcissistic behavior directly related to technology as opposed to the older generations. Having high levels of narcissism means individuals may lack critical empathy needed when entering a job in the service industry. (Doerr, 2014) Other weaknesses of the Millennial generation include struggling to have respectful communication tendencies. This can lead to personal conflicts amongst coworkers and even supervisors. Millennials also have a slight problem working individually own their own, without any given structure or supervision, to complete a task or project. This is caused by their team-oriented organizational behavior, unique from the other generations. In the article “Why Your Office Needs More Bratty Millennials”, the author Emily Matchar expresses a variety of reasons why the new generation in the workforce (millennials) needs to have their voices heard. She uses different terms to discuss this generation of workers, including Generation Y, another common name for millennials. Matchar’s exposition of why millennials are changing the workplace is broken down into specific points. She references the declining job market and why, due to circumstance, it is hard for millennials to get jobs as it is. Moreover, millennials are now pushing for a “customizable” workplace, such as being able to set their own hours.
Boomer’s see millennial’s as having a short attention span which is not what millennial’s intend. If they don’t see a job working out, they are faster to jump ship than Boomer’s and that fearless attitude actually leverages them more power with their company. Time management has become a persistent issue for people in the United States because of the lack of flexibility in the workforce. Work is taking over people’s lives. The current generation of workers tend not to demand because of the fear of unemployment; jobs are scarce these days. Generation Y workers have shown that they will not accept today’s hierarchical workplace, on the contrary, they will begin to change the workplace to their likings.

Millennials are accused of being tough to manage, behaving entitled, unfocused, lazy, narcissistic; however, they seek to have a purpose that they love and make an impact. Yet, the more they receive, they are not happy. Sinek jokingly states that they could be offered “free food and bean bags, because that is what they want, and they will still not be happy.” According to Sinek, there is a missing piece for millennials, furthermore, he goes on to say there are four characteristics that make millennials the way they are, “parenting, technology, impatience, and environment.” (2016).
Stereotyped in popular media as whining, self-absorbed, narcissistic, overindulged and tech-addled, the Millennial generation - born 1980 through 2000 - is generally considered to be the epitome of spoiled unreasonableness. Now that Millennials are making strides in the workplace, it is evident that those stereotypes are based more on anecdotes rather than reality. In fact it now appears that they very much echo their Boomer parents, which is why they are often referred to as Echo Boomers. Simply put, where Boomers have an optimistic outlook of the world, Millennials are hopeful; where Boomer work ethic is driven, Millennials are determined; where Boomers have a love / hate relationship with authority, Millennials treat authority with politeness; where Boomers believe in leadership by consensus, Millennials believe in leadership by pulling together; and where personal gratification is the impetus for Boomer relationships, Millennials have no personal motivation for relationships which are inclusive and with no boundaries (Zemke, Raines & Filipczak, 2013).
We are experiencing in our work force a changing of the guard, currently there are three generational groups that make up our workforce: The Baby Boomers, Generation X, and the Millennials, who for the past few years have begun to work together. However, what we are discovering is that because of the time frame of their births and the life altering affects during those times, it has influenced the values and objectives of each of these groups, ultimately affecting their ethics and values, in the work place. We will continue to discover the differences in each of these generations, their outlooks, and the steps that business leaders are taking to evolve their training programs and procedures to accommodate these changes and maintain or increase the ethical standards of their companies. Many business leaders are striving to ensure that a generational divide does not lead to miscommunication, hindered performance, and most importantly, put their company at risk.
Millennials are rumored to be “self-centered, unmotivated, disrespectful, and disloyal, contributing to widespread concern about how communication with millennials will affect organizations and how they will develop relationships with other organizational members” (Karen Myers 225). According to Sharon DeVaney, the millennial generation “were born between 1980 and 2000” (11) and that “The millennial generation is larger than the 46 million who are in Generation X and the millennials are almost equal in size to the 76.4 million in the baby boomer generation” (12) to this day.
The main themes addressed in this article are the generational changes within the workforce, the advancements in the economy that are affecting the workplaces and the changes in the work ethic of employees.
Workers are often pitted against each other in the work place as a form of competition. One division that is commonly seen is gender and race, but there is also a divide concerning age that isn’t discussed as frequently. Baby Boomers are those who was born between 1946-1964, when WWII soldiers came back home, settled down and started the “Baby Boom”. While Millennials are those born around 1981-2000, and have a similar population size as Baby Boomers. The focus of this paper is to elaborate on the changing landscape of work in America during the twenty-first century. According to the researchers, as the economy continues to slowly recover from the recession and economic crisis, more of our baby boomers are reentering the workforce. For the first time in history, there are four generations of people working side by side in the workplace. Think about your place employment and the different people who work there. It is sometimes hard to get your point across to someone in a different age generation. This especially becomes a problem in the supervisor employee relationship. In order to effectively communicate with your peers, you have to understand the context in which they view the world. This problem is a real concern for managers. There has even been a Center for Generational Studies created.
Why do I say that? Millennials like to classify themselves as “young professionals” rather than the narcissistic generation some describe them as. They have a different attitude towards going to work compared to the Generation X. While for earlier generations going to work was a daily routine, for millennials it seems to be more of a way to fund their other daily activities they enjoy. Although this may seem like they aren’t the “young professionals” they entitle, it does gives us a perspective of how employers should manage our expectations. While Reisig gives us a few different methods of doing this, two stick out the most. Having a work-life balance and strong communication with employees. “The millennials mantra is “work hard, play harder.” Millennials desire a flexibility in their scheduling to allow time for their personal endeavors” (pg. 27, Reisig). For instance, believing that having a greater quality of work output can simply justify the time that should have been spent of the work itself. This shows managers to consider maybe it would be a good idea to let team members to set their own schedules. While stating how a work-life balance helps connect with millennials having a strong communication with them is also important. While being socially driven, millennials need to feel connected at all times. It would be important for employers to stay on a current level with communication
