We finally arrived at the cabins after a treacherous eight mile hike up and back Hawk Hill, a mountain on looking the raging but soothing waves of the ocean. Hannah, along with the rest of her class, went to the dining hall to enjoy a delicious meal. After the now class of full bellies finished their meals they rushed to their night activity. Every last one of them crammed into a small room on the campus. They talked about the trip to Muir Woods the next day. The talk took about twenty minutes then they separated into small groups and perform skits. As she rose from her spot she felt eyes of many staring at her, whispering. What had she done wrong? Following the angry teacher, her heart beated rapidly inside of her. She was scared for what awaits her outside the door. Behind her, the door slammed and she jumped in startlement, then continued to walk over to Mr. Monroe at the end of the ramp. The first words Mr. Monroe said to Hannah were, “don’t worry you're not in trouble.” “Whew” Hannah let out a huge breath that she was holding. The two of them walked down to the dining hall, then back up again to the dorm, all while talking about what happened the night before in the girls bedroom. Once they arrived at Raven Dorm, none of the downstairs lights were on. Hannah went into the dark room with Mr. Monroe behind her. He paused at the door, holding his hand on the light switch. “Click”, the lights went on and the whole seventh grade class jumped up from the floor and yelled, “SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” This amazed Hannah! Everyone ended the day with delicious cupcakes with blue frosting for all of the seventh graders and Hannah got her own mini chocolate

The Jump-Off Creek introduces the reader to the unforgiving Blue Mountains and the harsh pioneer lifestyle with the tale of Lydia Sanderson, a widow who moves west from Pennsylvania to take up residence in a rundown homestead. She and other characters battle nature, finances, and even each other on occasion in a fight for survival in the harsh Oregon wilderness. Although the story is vividly expressed through the use of precise detail and 1800s slang, it failed to give me a reason to care because the characters are depicted as emotionally inhibited.
There is a serene moment when reading John Muir “A Windstorm in the forests,” that rushed through me. Which can only be described as a rush of emotions that one might face when returning home after traveling for so long. I feel that this response is so far harder to write than I could have imagined it to be because the forest Muir is describing within his story, within the Sierra Nevada is one that I grew up with. The same ones that I spent my summers and winter breaks at, I feel a slight struggle when trying to describe my response because I didn’t realize how much I miss all of that and how many of my memories are surrounded by that forest. When thinking about nature, Hans Christian Andersen wrote, “Just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.” John Muir and William Wordsworth both expressed through their writings that nature brought them great joy and satisfaction, as it did Andersen. Each author’s text conveyed very similar messages and represented similar experiences but, the writing style and wording used were significantly different. Wordsworth and Muir express their positive and emotional relationships with nature using diction and imagery.

The various clans of students help present the theme by showing us that there are many different types of people. The popular cheerleaders, the jocks, the geeks and those who are just trying to fit in. Melinda transforming the janitor’s closet symbolizes her hiding her feelings and Melinda’s inability to speak and tell people what happened to her. High school can be fun but unfortunately through the eyes of Melinda it was a very hard time.
The chapter on fecundity addresses the bizarre ways that nature has evolved to ensure the continuity of a species. As the title suggests, fecundity deals with the fertility of species where Annie Dillard explores the inefficiency of fertility and the brutality of nature’s evolution. In the end, Dillard concludes that death is a part of life.

The students could hardly sit still during penultimate period the day before the long Columbus Day Weekend. The school was gearing up for the annual pep rally held during the last period of the school day before the Columbus Day Weekend. Lots of Calvary Hill teachers would stick it to the students before long weekends and vacations by giving tests and quizzes, others would give up the instructional time and let the kids watch a movie. Peter didn’t test or let the kids waste time with movies, he structured the time with games of Jeopardy and other fun activities that kept the kids engaged and thinking about the content material, while still having fun. When the final bell rang, the students could hardly believe that the period had flown by. They gathered up their materials and headed for the door.

He demonstrates this by describing the storm and surrounding landscape in vivid detail. He further solidifies this theme by talking about how it makes him feel. We all grabbed our lawn chairs and cozied up next to the roaring red fire. I always sat a little too close, enough to where the fire burnt a hole straight through my favorite pair of flip-flops, assuring me to never make that mistake again. Before going to bed Nancy told us about her favorite past times here as a child and how just like the little girl we saw fishing, she was also afraid of fishing. She told us stories about how much the campground has evolved since she was a child and how every year she promises to take us here and to keep it a tradition. At bedtime Alicia and I crawl into our tents and snuggle up in our warm sleeping bags. We talked to each other about how sad we felt that it was almost the end of summer, and how nervous we felt to start our freshman year of high school. However, our conversations ended when Nancy yelled at as from the other tent to keep quiet and go to bed. I’d fallen asleep that night to the sound of the fire crackling out and the crickets chirping
