The Devil’s Arithmetic Independent Reading Response Questions, Chapters 6-9: 1) Hannah reveals that her best friend is Rosemary, a Catholic girl, and states, “As if that matters (p. 46).” As Chaya, her new friends are in shock upon hearing this. Ester states, “My father will not even let me talk to a goy (p. 47).” Why will Ester’s father not allow this? Why is Hannah not bothered by it? Use text evidence to support your response. Answer: Esther states, “My father will not even let me talk to a goy.” Her father does not want Esther to be friend with a goy, because he thinks that the goy will influence Esther, negatively. He also thinks that Esther will stop worshipping her religion, since her friend’s religion will change Esther’s point of view of her religion. To continue, her father also thinks that Esther will become a Christian, since she is influenced by her friends. He does not want her to stop worshipping her religion. On the other hand, Hannah states, “As a matter of fact, she’s Catholic,” Hannah said. “As if that matters.” In modern times, Hannah can befriend anyone from any religion. Her parents do not think that she will be religiously influenced by her friends. In fact, she will learn from her friends’ cultures. Nowadays, we find that religion can be an interesting topic, therefore, Hannah finds it normal to have friend with different religions. Finally, I can relate to this, because Hannah and I have many friends that are Catholic or Christian. This of course, is very normal in our time period. 2) Hannah tells stories of her “other” life in which she attends school and looks forward to the weekends. As Chaya, her new friends are again shocked by the fact that she-a girl-attends school. Hannah explains that he... ... middle of paper ... ...htened about being killed, but at least she has known, and this makes her prepared. However, when you do not know that you will be killed, it is much more horrifying. You do not know what will occur, therefore, when you are going to be killed, you will not be prepared for the consequences. Your death will be a surprising attack. I am really thankful that I am not in the Holocaust, therefore, I will not have to face what Hannah is facing. However, if I was in Hannah’s place, at least, I have my knowledge to give me a less surprising and painful death. Lastly, I remember a time where I did not study for a test. At that moment, I already knew that I would not receive a satisfying grade. I was prepared for the divesting moment. Similar to my situation, Hannah knows about the Holocaust, and knows what she will suffer. Therefore, we are both ready for the consequences.
We learn from conflict that sacrifices must be made to help others. In the novel The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen, Hannah was an altruistic person that always put others before herself. Because of her heroic nature, she often risked her life for other people. For example, when Commander Breuer visited the concentration camp to choose who would be killed, Hannah risked execution by attempting to save Reuven. When he was caught, Hannah desperately tried to convince the commander to let the child go. The commandant took Reuven away in spite of her pleas. She was unsuccessful; however, this selfless act could have cost Hannah her life. These dire situations force people to jeopardize their own safety for someone else. Hannah’s protective instincts
The current minimum wage right now in California is $9.00 per hour. The question is, will this be enough for people to pay off their rent and still able to not keep their fridge empty. In the book, "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich talks about working as a low wage worker. Barbara describes the environment of the jobs that she had done in a detailed manner. She also explained how most of her coworkers lived with more than one person in order to pay rent. One of her job was working in a nursing home which she got a really low pay to take care of elderly people. In addition to that job, she had another job in order to pay off her rent. Therefore, according to the book an individual may need more than one job or live in a house with more

...he story with the various characters. Melinda’s acquaintance, Heather works hard at finding friends and becoming popular, but in the end she turns away from Melinda. The story is about the high school years. Many times when we are growing up we can’t wait to get there because we will be treated as adults, but the truth is the problems that come along when we are older can be difficult. The various clans of students help present the theme by showing us that there are many different types of people. The popular cheerleaders, the jocks, the geeks and those who are just trying to fit in. Melinda transforming the janitor’s closet symbolizes her hiding her feelings and Melinda’s inability to speak and tell people what happened to her. High school can be fun but unfortunately through the eyes of Melinda it was a very hard time.
Her father works out of town and does not seem to be involved in his daughters lives as much. Her older sister, who works at the school, is nothing but plain Jane. Connie’s mother, who did nothing nag at her, to Connie, her mother’s words were nothing but jealousy from the beauty she had once had. The only thing Connie seems to enjoy is going out with her best friend to the mall, at times even sneaking into a drive-in restaurant across the road. Connie has two sides to herself, a version her family sees and a version everyone else sees.
She sacrificed almost all her personal pleasure for studying, but she did not see the point why she should make such sacrifice since she found the class reading as well as essays hardly arouse her interests. As she finally laid her eye on the bookshelf, seeing all the certificates and awards she had earned, Jennifer suddenly thought of what her father had told her, “school always comes first”. Tiredly and aimlessly, Jennifer signed and looked at a picture of her father. Slowly closing her eyes, she temporarily forgot about all the things like a tough life and overwhelming schoolwork which could make her stressful, and let her beautiful childhood memories of balloons, carousels and her father’s smiling face come into
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of multifactorial chronic heart disease. It is a consequence of plaque buildup in coronary arteries. The arterial blood vessels, which begin out smooth and elastic become narrow and rigid, curtailing blood flow resulting in deprived of oxygen and nutrients to the heart [1].
The preliminary step in myocardial infarction is atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis does not occur abruptly, it is a gradual and dynamic inflammatory disease which causes the narrowing of lumen due to the deposition of lipid and foam cells. The formation of fatty streak; which will eventually become a plaque causes the vessel lumen to diminish. The plaque will become unstable, rupture and eventually lead to the event of plaque disruption.
Tracy’s identity development is heavily influenced by her new friendship with Evie from that moment on. Evie is so popular, but she makes very poor choices and Tracy follows her lead because she wants to seem just as “cool” as her new companion. This is a type of peer pressure that affects many teenagers daily.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Coronary heart disease is defined by the hardening of the epicardial coronary arteries. The buildup of plaque in the arteries slowly narrows the coronary artery lumen. In order to better understand the physiology of the disease, it is important to first know the basic anatomy of the human heart. The aorta, located in the superior region of the heart, branches off into two main coronary blood vessels, otherwise known as arteries. The arteries are located on the left and right side of the heart and span its surface. They subsequently branch off into smaller arteries which supply oxygen-rich blood to the entire heart (Texas Heart Institute, 2013). Therefore, the narrowing of these arteries due to plaque buildup significantly impairs blood flow throughout the heart.
According to Heart Matters, “This can happen either in the chest (angina) due to lack of blood getting to the heart, or in the calves (claudication) due to lack of blood to the legs. The most dangerous outcome of atherosclerosis occurs if the plaque ruptures (breaks down). The blood flowing over the top of the plaque can clot, causing a blockage in the artery that can result in a heart attack, or it can be carried downstream causing a stroke (Bennet). This informs me that the atherosclerosis can be dangerous with time if it’s not treated how is supposed to be treated on time.
The process in which human beings advance through different stages in their life towards adulthood is highly hellacious. Moreover, it is very likely that one might encounter some difficulty in this progression. However, it is in human nature that we learn by failing at things, then mastering them by repeating them again and again. In the novel Lives of Girls and Women, Alice Munroe presents the life of Del Jordan in a very interesting way. The novel is divided into eight stages of Del’s life, where she experiences different scenarios which ultimately give her a better understanding of life. Even though being curious has its pros and cons, at the end of the day it leads to the enhancement of a person’s inner self. In the novel Lives of Girls and Women, Del the protagonist can be analyzed as being a very enthusiastic girl. Moreover, her curiosity proves to be a dynamic benefit of her actions.
Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of CAD. Atherosclerosis is a progressive disease characterized by fat deposits in the arteries causing them to block the normal passage of blood. No one is quite sure how atherosclerosis develops. The plaque consists mostly of cholesterol, phospholipids and smooth muscle cells. They also reduce the size of the lumen of the affected artery which impairs the blood flow of this artery and later on could form a thrombus that will completely occlude the vessel. “Unfortunately, signs and symptoms of atherosclerosis usually don’t develop until at least 70% of an artery’s lumen has become obstructed. Angina is almost always the first symptom to appear.”(Journal: The killer behind CAD,2010). Modifiable factors that could prevent the occurrence of CAD include cigarette smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, atherogenic diet like diet high in cholesterol, use of contraceptive and hormone therapy replacement. “Women continue to ...
...fter Rebekkah is very depressed and lonely. Within the novel Christians are also portrayed in a different way. Lina, who is Christian, is churchgoing and still bathes everyday despite what usual Christians do. In the end Lina’s religious views helps out Rebekkah. With such tension dealing with religion it is hard for one to have any freedom without being judged.
Therefore, Margaret does not have a religion and will chose her own religion later in her life if she wishes to ever have a religion. Even though she does not have a religion, Margaret does have a relationship with god. While her parents support her in all of her decisions regarding religion, her grandparents are trying to pressure her into choosing their respective religions. She must face all of this in a new town, new friends and classmates (who aren’t necessarily always the best people). The first main event of the book is Margaret and her family moving. They moved from New York City to Farbrook, New Jersey.Margaret believes a big part of the reason for the move is that her parents find she is too close to her paternal grandmother who they think is a bad influence. However, Margaret continues to meet her grandmother at The Lincoln center in New York City once a month. The second main event that happened is Margaret meeting all of her friends. The first friend she meets is Nancy. On the day Margaret moves into town, Nancy comes over to her house to meet her and invites Margaret over to her house. Then, on the first day of school, she meets all of her other friends first in class and then at their secret club meeting at Nancy’s house after school. The third main event that happened is Margaret’s quest to find a religion. This starts with Margaret already having a kinship with god. Then, at their first secret club meeting, Margaret’s new friends ask her if she will join the YMCA or the Jewish Community Center,to which she responds that she might not join either and if she does,it will be her parents’ decision. Then, their teacher, Mr. Benedict, gives them a year-long assignment on something personal and meaningful. Margaret chose religion. Later, she goes with her grandmother to a Synagogue for the Jewish
