Precipice, drew a stroke of lightning on his chest, and put a leaf in his mouth and jumped. Joe-Boy and Vinny are similar in many ways they are best friends too.
On page 3 it states that Vinny and Joe-Boy are 15 year old hawaiian boys heading into the ravine. Vinny doesn't want to go to the ravine, because his mom told him not to go down to the ravine. Joe-Boy would tease him if he didn't go with him. Vinny and his friend Joe-Boy are superstitious in that they think the stone goddess is going to protect them. Also Joe-Boy drew a lightning bolt across his chest and put a leaf in his mouth before he jumped. The two Hawaiian boys are superstitious at first could the dead boy really be down there. Towards the end Vinny stands up to his friends and tells them no and that he isn't
jumping. Vinny and Joe-Boy are very different yet still sort of similar. Vinny is weak and couldn't stand up to his friends. Joe-Boy is a confident boy and isn't scared to jump of a 50ft. Precipice. In “The Ravine” Vinny and friends were in a ravine were a boy had just got killed about two weeks ago in the pond they were going to. When I read the book I found out that Vinny was caring not only for himself but for others. When he saw his friends jumping off a ledge in the ravine to the pond he was scared especially for Starlene. In the book on page seven Vinny said this in his mind, “Pleasepleaseplease Starlene, I don’t want to
Now I will tell you some of their differences. Vinny doesn’t have a girlfriend but Joe-Boy does. Joe-boy teases Vinny about being afraid of heights. On page 7 it says, “especially if you were afraid of heights, like he was.” and it was talking about Vinny. On the other hand Joe-Boy is not afraid of heights. Vinny is scared for his friends and doesn’t want his friends to jump but Joe-boy wants Vinny to jump even though vinny does not want to jump.
Cole and peter whet to the pond and soaked. They had soaked so many times that that they just jumped in the pond with a splash. As they carried the ancestor rock up the hill they paused in their tracks. Less than 6 feet away was the spirit bear. But something was different about the bear, it had open wounds and blood on its white fur. Peter and Cole just stood there in that same position with the big ancestor rock behind them. The Spirit bear was so still that it amazed them so much that it scared them. At once they inched backwards down that hill.
Courage is an act of sacrifice that allows you to face danger without showing fear. A time he showed courage was when he threw the first punch at the rumble between the Greasers and Socs. He threw the first punch for pride, he threw it for loyalty, but he was courageous while doing so. As Ponyboy stated on page 142, "... He was ashamed to be on our side..." It took a lot of courage to throw the first punch being on a side you were ashamed of being on. He was ashamed because the person he punched was what he could've been and that crushed Darry. It would take a lot of courage to look after two adolescent boys while they are growing up. Darry could've gone to college, become a national football player and have a better life than what he had. Darry instead sacrificed that to keep his brothers together after the death of their parents. If Sodapop and Ponyboy could stay together, Darry would've gone to college. Darry was incredibly courageous to give that up for his brothers.
This short story, Abitibi Canyon, by Joseph Boyden consists several of important principles of Indigenous people that I would like to make connections to my own life, the world around me, and a video talking about biased assumptions people make without meeting them.
Misery, trauma, and isolation all have connections to the war time settings in “The Thing in the Forest.” In the short story, A.S. Byatt depicts elements captured from both fairy tale and horror genres in war times. During World War II, the two young girls Penny and Primrose endure the 1940s Blitz together but in different psychological ways. In their childhood, they learn how to use gas masks and carry their belongings in oversized suitcases. Both Penny and Primrose suffer psychologically effects by being isolated from their families’ before and after the war. Byatt depicts haunting effects in her short story by placing graphic details on the girls’ childhood experiences. Maria Margaronis, an author of a critical essay entitled “Where the Wild Things Are,” states that “Byatt’s tales of the supernatural depend on an almost hallucinatory precision for their haunting effects.” The hallucinatory details Byatt displays in her story have an almost unbelievable psychological reality for the girls. Penny and Primrose endure the psychological consequences and horrifying times during the Blitz along with the magical ideas they encounter as children. As adults they must return to the forest of their childhood and as individuals and take separate paths to confront the Thing, acknowledge its significance in their childhoods, and release themselves from the grip of the psychological trauma of war.

In the fictional short story of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” the author Ambrose Bierce does a superior job of making the mind of a reader wonder. Throughout the story, the reader is able to watch and experience the hanging of a local plantation owner Peyton Farquhar. The story contains three parts that show the present, a flash back to the past, and into an altered reality of Farquhar’s “getaway.” The story of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” demonstrates the theme of how the nature of time is free-flowing. Bierce uses three elements of fiction to successfully support the story in its free flow of time. Ambrose Bierce uses the setting, point of view, and plot structure to help organize the theme and the story’s unique elements.
Ernest Hemingway wrote a challenging short story about a couple that faces an awful issue. He sets his story, “Hills Like White Elephants” on a hot day at a train station, which is actually a stopping point between Barcelona and Madrid for the two main characters. They have to then decide where to go, whether or not to go with each other and/or to continue their relationship. The difference between the white hills and barren valley emphasizes the division between life and death, which comes to the choice Jig faces between having the baby and going through with the abortion. She seems very caught up between the two issues she has because she is very indecisive on what she wants to do.

I am adventurous. No I don't sky dive, wrestle crocodiles, or swim with sharks, but when asked by a group of friends to go cliff diving last summer, my best response was, “Sounds like fun!” I had never been afraid of heights yet have never experienced the thrill of cliff diving. All I could ask myself was, “What could go wrong?”
