The demand for international school in Hong Kong is increasing in the recent years. According to the annual questionnaire survey done by the Education Department, the total number of students in international schools increases 83.2 % from 1610 to 2950 within four years (1997/98 - 2001/02). Moreover, the total number of local students attending those schools also increases 63.2% from 6.8% to 11.1%. (Detail of statistics can be found in appendix P. 12) We can see that, local parents have a high value on their children's entry into international schools. In this essay, I am going to explain some reasons for the lure of international schools in Hong Kong. Firstly, I will discuss their packaging and images by exploring the web pages of some international schools in Hong Kong. Secondly, I will compare these schools with local schools in order to find out the reasons why these packaging are so attractive in Hong Kong context. Finally, I will also interview with a previous international student and his parents to find out their points of view on this issue. 1. The packaging and images of international schools It is a common belief among Hong Kong parents and students that international schools are very "attractive." However, how "attractive" are they? In this part, I am going to study the packaging and images of three international schools in order to answer this question. The three international schools selected are Chinese International School, Yew Chung International School and Shatin College. They are chosen because they gain increasing popularity and high reputation among parents in Hong Kong. By exploring to the web pages of the above three schools, the packaging used and the images of international schools can be divided ... ... middle of paper ... ...r of local students Percentage /98 29350 23520 1610 6.8 /99 29300 23270 1930 8.3 /00 29300 23660 2460 10.4 /01 29730 24980 2880 11.5 /02 30970 26420 2950 11.1 (Adapted from: http://www.info.gov.hk/emb/eng/info/lcpaper/paper1/paper1_120501a.html) Reference: Web page of Chinese International School: http://www.cis.edu.hk Web pages of Shatin College: http://www.shatincollege.edu.hk Web pages of Yew Chung International School, Hong Kong: http://www.ycef.com/en/HongKong_yewchung_school/index.htm
For a lot of parents, this is great, since most of them want a good education for their children. Therefore, if they have the money to afford such expensive school they will not have second thoughts of registering their children. However, according to the author, the school is just making its students worse off. The reason the school is doing this because is not interest in the children’s future, “it is thinking of the parents of its students, who see things like golf courses and Steinway pianos and small classes as evidence that their
Otherwise, why now the parents spend a lot of money to send their children to a good school to study, because the school education environment to the children’s influence is very important. When Wes A moved to Bronx, his mother had made a decision to send her children to private school after her seeing how poor the public school system had become, so she worked multiple jobs to manage the cost and relied on her parents to take care the children before and after school while at work. “My mother decided soon after our move to the Bronx that I was not going to public school. She wasn’t a snob, she was scared.”(47) Because she knew, if the children are growth of a bad education environment, the children of the world to know nature will be distorted. Without a good education, there is also no habits; No good sense, and also there will be some bad behavior. Today, the rate of crime is high; almost all can find the root cause of their growth environment. Maybe the lack of discipline, discouraged by mistake friends or too much stress, but all shows the importance of good education environment for children to grow
As the evidence shows that, "The Chinese value education as a stepping stone to success, and children - especially only children - are under a lot of pressure to excel in school. There is also an unspoken code of conformity, and there is a lot of pressure to fit in, for to be singled out is the penultimate in humiliation, causing students to 'lose face' in front of their peers. In addition to academics, parents also try and enroll their children in a wide variety of after-school activities to enhance their overall development."("History of Chinese Education, Five Necessities of Chinese Culture", Paragraph 2) This evidence shows not only teachers but also parents or students from China are still keeping the traditional mind to study. Thousands years ago in ancient China, schools are competitive, students needs to have high quality of studying and good relations with the school as well. Even they might feel stressful on learning when they are in elementary school. Nowadays, parents still think their kid must have the best education, more strong points. Childrens are learning lots of skills and knowledge when they are extremely young. In Canada, it's totally different. Students like team-work, they don't have bias on any schools. They study breezily without any pressure. So, more traditional makes Chinese education different from Canadian

The Chinese community in Singapore can be divided into two clusters that is, the Chinese migrants from China that still regarded China, as their “home” as well as the Straits Chinese who mostly did not consider themselves as citizens of China rather, they were British citizens that considered Singapore their home. Straits Chinese or the Queen’s Chinese was not bothered about the politics in China and were mostly educated in English schools. This paper will therefore discuss the challenges in education faced by the Chinese community, more specifically the China-born Chinese migrants, in postwar Singapore.
If you ask any American High School student what’s the highest priority, you may hear some unsettling responses. In America, though education is still cherished, some worry that students are becoming less interested in the learning part of high-school and more interested in the social aspects. Now as people are seeking better ways to educate and encourage students, many are starting to look to other countries for new concepts. One country in particular that values education in a more serious way than most is China. The differences between the Chinese and American education systems are so grand that it is hard to compare. Though it is not comparable, we can discover certain aspects of each education system and how they affect the students.

Depend upon results in figures (9,11), there are several factors cause on process of distribution of free schools, for instance government policy and local authority's role, population density, environmental difference such as urban area or rural, economic level, results of academic achievement, parent’s request to open the type of school, social segregation and social enterprises. For example, it might be parents in urban areas request to open new type of schools or send their children to the new type of schools, but maybe in rural parents do not like the new type of schools and they prefer a good local state school. Also the quality of schools’ curriculum and results of academic success make parents to send their children to those schools which has best academic achievement. In addition, sometime parents or social enterprises demand to open school based on religion or social type. As Ball (2013) discusses that the education system changing due to government policy toward to education, for example currently depend on environment some parents allowed to choose type of school for their children, but some do not. It is likely that the family skill, time and economic levels make parents to choose school's type. at the same time family allowed to choose any type of school they want for their
Being educated in an international environment certainly sets the building blocks for the future of students. The environment through which education is realized is critical for the learning children. In this aspect, there exist many forms of schooling that support education of children; public schooling, home schooling and private schooling. However, each method of schooling has its own advantages and disadvantages compared to other schooling methods. The above arguments are based on both home schooling and public schooling. Moreover, these arguments focus in realization of specific goals of education and education environments as indicated in each subheading.
School systems can really differ from country to country. In the text “American high school” by Sarah Otto, she mentions some differences between the American and the Swedish school system. In another text, “Polar opposites” written by Herman Hallberg – he writes about his year in Namibia and what the school system looks like there. My dream school would probably be a mixture of the Swedish, the American and the Namibian school systems.
... several schools. In that case, the oligopoly with low quality of education is predictable since not thorough preparation leads to management shortage. According to many renowned economists, “privatization entails frequent monopolies that are fully as inefficient as the government enterprises they replaced and more corrupt”. Then the damage caused all remains to the students. For market minded people, the loss of market value means withdraw from the market. Hong Kong is wholly developed by the principle of free market. Education however, having different characteristics, cannot be seen same as the commodity since it delivers values to the children. PIE of Hong Kong has been already criticized of overestimating its deficits, yet underestimating revenues. As the PIE is having greater sense of market principle, such defects are arising and will be worsen in the future.
