Schools are split into four categories/types known as maintained schools. These schools receive funding at least partially from the government. The main differences in mainstream schools come down to the way in which the schools are managed and run. The school will also be owned by the LEA and the schools governing body will be responsible for the running of the school. The LEA decides upon the admissions policy. Community schools also follow the national curriculum and offer services to the surrounding community where possible, for example adult learning courses.
Specialist schools- Many secondary schools have a specialist status meaning they specialise in at least one but not often more than two subject specialisms. The reason behind this is that they receive more government money. Schools can also have SEN Special educational needs status, provided that it falls under one of four SEN codes of practice.
Voluntary aided schools, usually religious schools. These are run by a governing body but are usually owned by a religious or charity organisation. The governing body are responsible for repairs to the school. They also have access to LEA funds. The governing body will also employ its own staff and pupils who attend have to follow the national curriculum.
