Diversity Paper I believe that it is important to recognize that there is diversity not only in the world, but also here at UW-Whitewater. To me, an important part of diversity is acknowledging that everyone is a unique individual. Each person comes from his or her own background and are shaped by the experiences in his or her life. Differences can come in many forms whether athletic ability, cultural background, intelligence level, religious beliefs, or personality. It is essential to be aware of the differences in society so that you may live a lifestyle that is considerate of everyone. To live in a world where we respect and support each other requires us to first take the step of putting ourselves out there. After all, diversity is a good thing. If everyone was the same, then the world would probably be a very boring place. Instead, diversity allows for us to be unique individuals and be creative in separate ways. Although I am not a die-hard advocate of diversity, I do try to remain respectful towards everyone. I am not sure if there is a specific way in which I contribute to diversity globally, as I feel that none of my behavior has very large-scale effects. I guess I would have to say that my non-judgmental attitude is how I contribute globally because it is not just people I know that I try to treat equally but any member of society. I support diversity here at UW-Whitewater, and possibly globally, by attempting to be proactive at being not only accepting but also welcoming towards people that are different from me. For example, while I am not supporter of the LGBT society in the sense that I am going to join marches or sign petitions, neither am I condemning of the LGBT community.
