Team players have started to reduce in the modern sports era. Many players have become self-centered, even in team sports. High school athletes always want their names in the paper or want to get acknowledged by coaches or friends, but true team players do things that many people do not see. They may lead by example during practice or do little things that make a difference in the game. Linemen, on a football team, are great examples of this because the quarterback, running backs, and wide receivers get all the credit for great plays and touchdowns, while linemen have to block the three-hundred-pound man in front of them every time, or the play will get blown up. Team players don’t do things for themselves, they do it for the benefit of the team. In a team player’s mind, the betterment of the team must come first. When a teammate does something wrong, maybe by accident or on purpose, a team player will call them out and tell them what went wrong. Communication also helps with knowing where players remain on the field or court. In volleyball, communication is very important because players need to know where their teammates are, in case help is desired. Basketball and soccer players also need to do this to know where to pass the ball if their teammate is not visible. Team players don’t just lead by example on the field, they also have to work hard off of it as well. In school, team players can show up in projects as well as regular work. Team players get their work done and then attempt to help anyone around them that needs help. They also help their teammates who may struggle in classes that the leaders might be good at. For instance, if Stacy was not performing well she would have to be told by another player to change something up to fix what she is doing wrong this will help with team innovation because Stacy will not be the only one told that she needs to fix something. Going off research about the team halo effect, we live in an individualistic society so the team halo effect plays a huge role in how teams measure success and failure. This makes it easier to explain why Marist has lost three years in a row to Wagner. Studies have shown that in a more collectivist society the team halo effect decreases or disappears. For the whole team to be blamed for the failure, there needed to be a team effort instead of having it be an individualistic game. If the team were playing together there would not be a single person to blame for it and the whole team would take the responsibility of the loss. I was able to see my teammates’ strengths and weaknesses. I knew if the person beside me was going to be able to get to the ball or if I needed to get it. When I get to know a person I automatically look at what they are capable of doing themselves and what they might need help with. This quality is what makes me a good leader. I understand that I am not the one to score all of the points in a basketball game. I know that I don’t have to slam the ball down in a volleyball match in order to get the point. I play with a leader mindset. I know that if I get the ball to one of my teammate’s, she has the ability to drive in and score. I know that if I tip it to the outside hitter of the other team, she will be too slow to get to the ball, resulting in a point for my team. This quality also carries over into other aspects of my life such as group projects or Bible Bowl competitions. I am so grateful that I developed this mindset because I know how to make a group of people
I believe that leadership is an important skill to have, especially when teamwork is involved. Over the many years that I have played, I wanted the team to be really close. I thought that in order to be successful we must all treat each other like we wanted to be treated. The experience of being around the girls and coaches on my team made me feel like they were my second family. I would spend almost the same amount of time around them as I would my own family at home. I am extremely thankful that I have friends on the team and it is an honor for me to be one of their leaders.
Teamwork is the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. Any group of people could form “teams”, but when you form a group where everyone can work together and teach each other things such as self-respect and self-confidence, you have teamwork. When everyone is struggling, why not help each other out? Coach Ken Carter in demand of respect and commitment transforms a group of teenage boys into a group of young men in the movie Coach Carter. The fact that Coach Carter had transformed this group of boys is not why I enjoyed this movie. My interest moves more towards how he transformed these boys. He taught these boys to value themselves not only as a team, but also as individuals. He also taught them to look at something more than the moment at hand; and look more into the future.
The attribution theory is essential to coaching and understanding our athletes and their motivations. Throughout sports and competitive activities, individuals are determining whether the activity they are doing is a success or a failure. But the real question that needs to be asked is why are they attributing something as a success or a failure. What is guiding them to view something that can be as simple as getting out of bed in the morning as a success or failure? This paper will dive into why the attribution theory is so critical to coaching and how you can use it to guide yourself, your players, and your teams to become as successful as possible.

In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.

... conclusion, looking back at the evolution of sports, it has gone from a group of athletes that played a game they loved whole heartedly, to a group of athletes that play a game basically for greed; gone from a group working together and using their experiences to help others, to seeing how good they can make themselves look. Fans have suffered through players’ strikes so they can make more money. They have started using “performance enhancing drugs” to get bigger muscles so they can out do their own teammates. Sports reports talk about how an individual won the game rather than the team winning the game. Integrity and teamwork need to start at the high school level of sports so these young athletes will know how it feels to work together as a whole. It will benefit them in all aspects of their lives, from school to family and that is something to be proud of.
It is unquestionable that lessons of teamwork are learned through involvement with sports. Sports are all about working as a team to reach a common goal- winning games, meets, or matches. As most athletes know, this goal is not possible without becoming one joined team rather than a bunch of individuals. Receiving recognition from a team mate or a coach will boost your self esteem because you have been acknowledged for your efforts. As you are praised for your efforts, you will become more confident, thus improving your self esteem. Often times, the bond formed between team mates on the field translates into a friendship off the field. As team mates come to depend on each other and know that they are depended on, their level of commitment or responsibility to the game and skills needed for the game increases.
