I believe personality affects the counseling relationship between a nutritionist and client, by either hindering it or helping it. For instance, because an individual’s personality or character involves a tremendous amount of emotions, finding ways to explore a positive outcome could be challenging when the two personalities clash. Therefore, being mindful of the clients needs during a counseling session should always be a priority. In addition, being able and mature enough to set all outside feelings aside for a moment in helping another is crucial. Moreover, practicing techniques; such as, being a good listener, sensitive towards your clients' concerns and open minded are key to having a great outcome when involving personality during …show more content…
However, I’m a good balance between “action & harmony”. The strengths and weakness in both personality styles seem to fit whom I am today. I believe these two specific personality styles can either be a positive or a negative during nutritional counseling but the key in my opinion to achieve a good outcome is to always perceive to achieve. Attitude is life. How one decides to express it and use it to their own advantage and those around them in a positive manner can be a pleasant experience. On the contrary, I found some rather interesting information from a source about this topic, as it states “people who make good counselors genuinely like other people. They like being around people and talking with all different kinds of people. Being a "people person" isn't enough, however. Counselors enter the profession because they want to help people solve their problems. This takes specific personality traits, and more importantly, a combination of these traits to be most effective in their jobs” (What Kinds of Personalities are Suitable to Be a …show more content…
Many times this means making only slight alterations in advice from patient to patient, but the variances can make huge differences. Good counselors who want to go beyond using "cookie cutter" solutions and giving pat answers seek to offer better suggestions -- those that stem from their creative and flexible ideas” (What Kinds of Personalities are Suitable to Be a Counselor?). Lastly, “a good counselor should fully understand emotion and reason, and know when to use either or both. It's essential to have empathy, for example, but empathizing too much with a patient may cloud the ability to help him find the way out of his dilemma. Education gives a counselor the tools to diagnose a problem, but the counselor needs to listen to his intuition, too, rather than put a patient into a convenient diagnostic box. Devising creative solutions for each person requires the ability to apply both emotion and reason as it makes the most sense in each case” (What Kinds of Personalities are Suitable to Be a Counselor?). I found this information, ironic because overall, the area I believe adjustments would be highly needed in order to become a successful nutrition counselor is controlling my own emotions. For instance, knowing when to draw the line with getting too involved emotionally with a client’s
This essay will explore one of the possible combinations of theories on personality and explain how it can be applied in practical therapy.
The first condition is unconditional positive regard, which means the therapist, must be empathetic and non-judgmental with expressing their feelings of understanding, trust, and confidence that encourage Mary to make her own decisions and choices. The second condition is empathetic understanding, which means the therapist completely understands and accepts Mary’s thoughts and feelings. The last condition is congruence, which means the therapist will carry no air of authority or professional superiority except present a true and accessible self that clients can see is honest and transparent with her eating habits and past
A counselor should always keep their thoughts to themselves and remain open-minded about the situation. The only time a counselor should share their thoughts is if it helps the client with their situation that they are dealing with. “Counselors must practice only within the boundaries of their competence (Standard C.2.a.), and, if they “determine an inability to be of professional assistance to clients” (Standard A.11.b.), they should facilitate a referral to another provider. (Kocet, M. M., & Herlihy, B. J. (2014). Addressing Value-Based Conflicts Within the Counseling Relationship: A Decision-Making Model. Journal Of Counseling & Development, 92(2), 180-186 7p. doi: 10.1002/j.1556-6676.2014.00146.x).” Keeping your thoughts to yourself is
The counseling session should be centered on the client and their understanding of their world and/or problems not heavily weighted on the counselor interpretation of the client’s situation. The role of the counselor is to examine a problem needs changing and discover options in overcoming their problem. Bringing about change can help change the client’s narrative on their problem in the future and/or on life in the process.
The personal traits that a therapist have no necessarily only affect the therapist but they also affect the patient/client and their experience with the therapy process. That's why having these personal traits makes the professionals job much better but it also makings the experience for the patient better. There are a lot more of personal traits that would be great to have but the these specific ones are the must have to be able to thrive in this profession. All the traits mentioned in this essay are the personal traits therapists must have to be successful in this field, being relaxed and determined, supportive, and lastly
Regardless of what issues a client presents in session a counselor should first identify if the client’s issue will cause an issue for them. For example, if a counselor is in recovery from alcoholism and a client needs to address their own addiction issues this may be too close to home for the counselor to handle in an unbiased and professional way. Therefore a counselor should always ask themselves, ‘will this be an issue for me’ when presented with a client issue. Secondarily as counselor should identify if they are competent in their abilities to address the client’s issue. Is the topic something the counselor is comfortable with, educated on, or has experience with? It is unprofessional, unethical, and potentially harmful to the client to agree to address issues that one is not competent to address. If a counselor finds that they are competent and the client’s issue does not cause an issue for the them than the counselor can proceed to identifying new go...
Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. Others may have had a bad experience with counseling and concluded that it can be done better. People do not think of this work so much as a job, or even as a career. More typically, a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one toward the counseling profession” (An invitation to). .
¬When considering what my own personal philosophy of counseling would be, it was eye opening to consider who I was a person and how much I have grown. The self analysis was new to me because I never thought about how I do that on a day to day basis. Reviewing the questions I found that a lot of my focus surrounded family, my significant other, and close friends. Constantly living in a diverse population and having that as my surrounding also made its mark in my answers. I also noted that both past and present influences, but primarily the present, play a large role in my own perspective. By following the prompt, I was made to understand that my thought process makes me think of what is occurring in the present and how I can alter these happenings to help shape the future that I want.
My professional identity is fundamentally grounded on my commitment to social welfare through which I achieve my sense of purpose. Furthermore, I support the humanistic values that uphold the core philosophy of the counseling profession and uniquely distinguish counseling from other helping professions. Specifically, I endorse the wellness model wherein optimal health is achieved via holistic integration of mind, body and spirit (CITATION). Likewise, I believe that successful integration begins and ends with the counselor-client relationship; a secure, genuine and empathic relationship is at the heart of well-being and personal growth. Finally, my academic studies as well as the experiential learning process thus far have imparted a sincere sense of pride in the field of counseling; I value the dedication that is required to become a counselor and I am confident in our abilities and our mission as a profession. For that reason, I strive to exemplify those values which promote professional competence and enhance the collective identity of the counseling profession.
Leadership has been studied and defined since the beginning of times. Throughout history, the leadership theory was characterized by the idea of leaders being great men who were brave and sources of authority and Justice (Marsiglia). However, leadership theories have changed over time and new ones have been developed. Similarly, in today’s time, a leader’s leadership style is defined as the way a leader approaches action towards followers to accomplish a mission. Despite the fact that leadership styles are vital, it is concluded that the essence of leadership is actually an individual’s personality and what provides the motivation, purpose, and direction to lead efficiently towards accomplishments. Personality types are known to be important in leadership because they help a leader develop followers accordingly, make valuable and timely decisions, and have a different perspective to accomplish a job. Personality shapes leadership and therefore also leadership styles. Without personality, there would be no leadership styles. Personality types provides the base for leadership development, style, and the foundations for qualities needed for any leadership position.
Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
As a future counselor, I have enjoyed learning about the different techniques and theories of counseling. Understanding each approach is important but I believe that the counselors self knowledge of her or his own values, worldviews and life philosophy is just as important for the counselor to do the job effectively. Each theory that we learned about, I could see being helpful to different people, their circumstance and individual problem. I can see myself using different parts of each in my future career. Currently, I more drawn to the Adlerian theory. I understand and agree when Adler believed that people do have the ability to monitor and control the direction of their lives. The unconscious shapes personality,
Personality is a person's characteristic pattern of behaving, thinking, and feeling. The development of reliable and valid measures of personality has been a boon to psychologists' attempts to define and explain individual differences in this important domain. Comprehensive theories of personality have been useful to these attempts as well. Psychoanalytic theories emphasizes unconscious forces, while humanistic approaches focus on individuals' attempts to better themselves and find acceptance. Each of these perspectives has been used to explain how and why variations in mental health develop.
Personality Psychology is defined as “The scientific study of psychological forces that make people uniquely themselves”. (Friedman&schustack, 1999) Personality is a pattern of ones cognitions, emotions and behaviors. Among many other patterns, personality is relatively composed of attitudes, motivations, relationships, beliefs, and defenses. Every individual has a human body, mind, thoughts and feelings. In some manner individuals are all s...
