Engineering ethics is the field of applied ethics and system of moral principles that apply to the practice of engineering. It is closely related to subjects such as the philosophy of science , the philosophy of engineering and the ethics of technology. As engineering rose as a distinct profession during the 19th century, engineers saw themselves as either independent professional practitioners or technical employees of large enterprises. There was considerable tension between the two sides as large industrial employers fought to maintain control of their employees. The American Society of Civil Engineer(ASCE), the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) , the American Society of Mechanical Engineer (ASME), and the American Institute …show more content…
Members consider the consequences of their work and societal issues pertinent to it and seek to extend public understanding of those relationships. 3. Members are honest, truthful, and fair in presenting information and in making public statements reflecting on professional matters and their professional role. 4. Members engage in professional relationships without bias because of race, religion, sex, age, national origin or impairment. 5. Members act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, disclosing nothing of a proprietary nature concerning the business affairs or technical processes of any present or former client or employer without specific consent. 6. Members of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers shall aid in preventing the election to membership of those who are unqualified or do not meet the standards set forth in this Code of Ethics.
The code of ethics of IEEE • • to accept responsibility in making decisions consistent with the safety, health, and welfare of the public, and to disclose promptly factors that might endanger the public or the environment; • to avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest whenever possible, and to disclose them to affected parties when they do exist; • to be honest and realistic in stating claims or estimates based on available data; • to reject bribery in all its forms; • to improve the understanding of technology; its appropriate application, and potential consequences; • to maintain and improve our technical competence and to undertake technological tasks for others only if qualified by training or experience, or after full disclosure of pertinent
Healthcare professionals: Seek the beneficence and nonmaleficence of the patient by giving them truthful and accurate documented services and charging fair legal rates according to standard industry protocols that are reproducible, verifiable, and truthful for the services
An aspirational goal for any department is for all members to hold and support the same values at all times. However, that is almost impossible due to the diversity of its members. Members have different backgrounds, different experiences,
policies as well as practices. It enables authorities to make informed decisions based on the

As a member, I engage in mentoring programs for school aged students in my community. I interact and support other individuals in achieving goals to address social challenges. I am also active in other initiatives
Professionals are people who have equipped themselves with the knowledge and skills in a given field. The interest of improvement of the professional identity is an evidence of how high standards are placed upon the professionals in the community (Johnson et al., 2012). Each profession creates its norms, values and scope of practice that distinguishes it from any other profession. Different legal ethics are upheld and everyone needs to work as per the stipulated ethics in the field to be part of the profession. People in the field are expected to be knowledgeable and independently use decision
“Engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people.” 1 It is by this premise that engineering codes of ethics have been written to outline professional standards for both managers and engineers. Exhibiting the highest standards of honesty and integrity are imperative for the protection of public health, safety, and welfare.2 When ethical principles are compromised, the risk of endangering others greatly increases, especially with mission and safety critical systems. Extreme consequences include not only complete mission failures and great financial loss, but also fatalities. Though most engineering accidents are associated with aerospace, mechanical, civil, or even electrical engineering (due to the nature of these disciplines such that the end products are actually tangible objects), an increasing number of accidents in software engineering have brought attention to the importance of ethics in information technology.
...eputation of honesty, quality, and integrity. It is also each employee’s responsibility to report to the company any situation where the standards or the laws are being violated.
From the start of this course, I have kept asking myself, what is the true purpose of emphasising engineering ethics? For people who always follow the profession of ethics, iterating such thing again and again will only bring them boredom. On the contrary, for those people who enjoy a completely free life, the code of ethics will not be able to constrain them even a little because they don 't care about rules from the very beginning. Therefore, from this perspective, as its biggest target, engineers who might defy engineering ethics will not be influenced by such notion. Considering this, I believe the appearance of engineering ethics is not to play the role of serious law that regulates the behaviour
Engineering is a professional career and thus much is expected out of them. Morals and values must be incorporated into the work of an engineer based on his/her own believes and those of the company. In today’s age, money speaks. Profit is a huge concern of companies even to the point where violations and infractions of the law are committed. Just to name a few immoral acts in engineering include: plagiarism, bribery, and whistleblowing. Whistleblowing can be either good or bad. It could save lives, but could also get one fired. Bribery, however, is a very deceptive act and can lead to actions being taken that otherwise would not have been. Bribery breaks many of the cannons in the NSPE Code of Ethics and thus should be taken seriously.
Delegate appropriately. This ensures that registrants delegate work only to members of staff that are competent in the duty. Delegated tasks should also be supervised with the appropriate amount of support. This is seen within my practice where I will be delegated to conduct the weekly maintenance. These duties are placed on me to conduct only once I have been properly trained. Once competency has been reached unit these duties I will still be supervised by a senior member of
Ethics is the moral behavior that guides our actions; it motivates us in our personal behavior and is relevant in a business setting as well. Many organizations have set forth a set of guidelines known as a “Code of Ethics”. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, being one of these organizations, has set forth their code as a requirement for students and engineer members to adhere to. Heading towards a career in electrical engineering I choose this organization to elaborate on for my ethics project.
“The treatment of information that an individual has disclosed in a relationship of trust and with the expectation that it will not be divulged to others without permission in ways that are inconsistent with the understanding of the original disclosure” (University of California, Irvine, n.d.).
...observe and report facts as given from both sides without interfering with any data. This is because people may base their decision to join a certain religion from the findings, only to be misguided by lack of objectivity by the researcher.
Virtues in Engineering: Applying Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics to Engineering and Lifelong Learning. Engineers are innovators. They are dreamers and doers. They think outside the box and solve problems that civilians sometimes do not even realize they have. However, with innovation comes responsibility.
