The Meaning of Social Change for Walden Graduate Students

The leadership team of Walden University has provided various tactics to career professionals with an opportunity to convert over to scholar-practitioners. These strategies involve strengthening its commitment to social change by selection of developing a concept for various diverse community members. The approach will include encouraging the growth of existing plans that impacts positively to overseeing progress for each college program, Walden University community and analyzing students’ readiness as agents of social change.
As a member, I engage in mentoring programs for school aged students in my community. I interact and support other individuals in achieving goals to address social challenges. I am also active in other initiatives
In Scholarship, we serve others when we link together and assist one another in tutoring. We also provide services to non-members when we host scholarship programs that teach students something that classrooms can’t. For example we had an event, where we hiked through the National Forest and learned survival tips. This was also a risk management program where we were taught the proper way to pitch a tent and how to identify areas to set up a camp site. Leadership extends through service in our communities. Not only does Phi Sigma Pi support HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership) our National Philanthropy but we are actively involved in the Huntsville community. We have participated in a number of community service opportunities including: Bearkat All Paws In, Carriage In Nursing Home, Highway Clean-Up, Build a House with Dan Phillips, Relay for Life, and The Good Shepard Mission, to name a few. The purpose of this organization is to bring people of all racial backgrounds together on a bi-weekly basis in a mission to provide a constructive exchange, including topics of education, culture, civic duty, recreational events, finance, health, and social events to promote the projects and philosophy of Black Students on Campus.
In my junior year of high school, I joined the leadership program called ASB, also known as associated student body. I had the honor and role of being the school’s unofficial videographer to promote events with videos and short films posted on our social media sites because of my passion for video editing and artistic abilities. I also became responsible as being chairman for one of our committees to organize special recognition events for our senior athletes. ASB made my work stressful and challenging, but it was a good way to connect with others.
In sources of strength, the members are chosen as someone who would be a person anyone could come up and talk with if they were having a bad day. Also, as seniors we have two seventh grade kids that we mentor. I do this because I remember how hard it was being a seventh grader and not really knowing much about high school. Once a week we sit down and talk with the children. I always love the stories they have to tell and I truly feel blessed when I can help with anything they are struggling with. Whether that be something in school or something at home, it is so fulfilling talking with them. This activity has taught me what it means to give back to a school and to these kids who need my help. I love service and I spend a lot of time trying to help others with problems. Sources of strength has let me do just that. I have learned what it means to be a leader. This is a large responsibility I do not take lightly. I know the actions I do will have an effect on others, so I try to make sure those effects are positive at all

...suade adults who smoke to stop. When I see an adult smoking sometimes I will ask them if they know all the risk then give them some facts about the danger. In this effort I serve the community by making an effort to keep the people in it healthier. Lastly, I show service to my school through the help I provided while in the National Junior Honor Society. As a member in NJHS I helped our middle school begin a recycling program; I helped get the recycling boxes and bins ready, gather paper from around the school, and sort the paper after school. Through this I show a dedication to my school and community, because not only does recycling help the school reduce waste but it also allows the environments resources to last longer. For these reasons I would be an excellent, determined, helpful member, who is more than willing to provide service to my school and community.
I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)

The primary trait that I lack is confidence. In my mind, others are always smarter, prettier, more driven, and just better than me. Because of this attitude, I do not usually voice my opinions, state my ideas, or take control of anything; I automatically assume that anything I say or do is wrong or stupid. Although I still need to work on strengthening my confidence, SMU’s community atmosphere, specifically the Hilltop scholars program, has given me the enormous confidence boost I need to step out of my comfort zone and make my ideas a reality. A gain of confidence through supportive communities is apparent in the films Legally Blonde, Renaissance Man, and Higher Learning because each film includes individuals who need greater self-confidence, which comes from the support of their communities. In “The Quest for Community in Higher Education,” Parker Palmer outlines specifically how community can build up confidence. Additionally, in “The SMU Community According to Etzioni,” Christiano Gallo illustrates that confidence promotes involvement, which promotes confidence. The support I feel from various members of the SMU community has provided me with experiences similar to Elle, Rago, and Malik’s and has helped me understand how Palmer’s ideas foster confidence. Also, encouragement from others has opened my eyes to how involvement can instill confidence. Community gives us somebody to lean on. Somebody to lean on gives us confidence.
As a student enrolled in the Criminal Justice program at Fayetteville State University (FSU), I find that the university demonstrates a genuine concern for how it impacts the student population. One of the goals behind FSU’s mission is to establish an environment that creates learning experiences to influence each student’s life perspective. My personal experiences during my tenure at FSU have helped shape how I see and view the world. Both my social and professional development has been influenced by the facets which the school promotes; self- identity, shared values, and its commitment of selfless service to the community.
