Ethics is the moral behavior that guides our actions; it motivates us in our personal behavior and is relevant in a business setting as well. Many organizations have set forth a set of guidelines known as a “Code of Ethics”. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, being one of these organizations, has set forth their code as a requirement for students and engineer members to adhere to. Heading towards a career in electrical engineering I choose this organization to elaborate on for my ethics project.
In the paragraphs that follow you will be introduced to the Code of Ethics as outlined by IEEE, and what it means to its members. A comprehensive summarization will be provided for each guideline along with examples of how this code has been recently violated. The vast world of technology, as ever-changing as it is, can affect almost everyone in any aspect of life. This being the case it is important that we as students and engineers adhere to the guidelines set forth by the IEEE, and commit to conduct ourselves to act in a professional and ethical manner. While this is the conduct expected to be exemplified by the members of IEEE, many organizations and firms have similar codes to which they too expect their members to follow.
The initial ethical guideline presented in the IEEE Code of Ethics states “to accept responsibility in making decisions consistent with the safety, health and welfare of the public, and to disclose promptly factors that might endanger the public or the environment”. In regards to health, safety and well-being of the public and environment, many would consider this to be the most important rule presented. In this case Walker allegedly operated in a fashion similar to the example given above in regarding self-dealing. Whether the work was performed in a manner that complied with all regulations, the act of self-dealing in itself is unethical and lead to the investigation by the OEC.
In conclusion ethics governs everything we do, and every aspect we operate in. When ethics are violated in business the effects continue to run downhill and are absorbed by the consumer. The ways in which these are absorbed differ case by case, whether they affect us financially or physically. Memberships into organizations can be beneficial in showing credibility. Acting in regards to the organization or associations code of ethics seems to be a small price to pay for this kind of benefit.
The National Society of Professional Engineers Code of Ethics lays out guidelines and standards to which all engineers should abide when making professional decisions and communicating with their peers and the public. Ethics and communications played a large role in the cause of the event and the end result of the mission. The following section will discuss the ethics of the events that transpired prior to the launch, the communication of the crews and the NASA public relations office, and the ethics of the actions taken by the engineers after the incident.
In week 5, I will discuss the AHIMA code of ethics and whether it is good or not. I will also discuss the principles and whether they should be changed or not. Employees will be discussed and how some may respect and how may not respect it. Should they be terminated or just simply disciplined for their actions, that is what will be discussed here in this week’s apply paper. My conclusion will be an overall review of what was discussed and the importance.

To clarify, the Engineering Code of Ethics is the set of rules established by the National Society of Professional Engineers that all engineers are expected to adhere to. In essence, the fundamental tenets of this code are that all engineers are expected to prioritize public safety, as well as be honest with their clients and the general public while only doing work that they are qualified to do. (“Code of Ethics,” n.d.). The reason this code is crucial in this case is because it offers guiding principles for the men and women who are in charge of so many of the various structures and buildings that are used by everyone in society. If the engineering population were to fail to adhere to this code, many people’s lives would be put in jeopardy; buildings might crumble, planes may crash, and bridges could collapse. This means that this code serves to keep engineers in check so that the world maintains stability, therefore its importance cannot be emphasized enough. Many organizations develop ethical codes to ensure employees and employers understand the difference in doing good or bad. In that respect, ethics are an essential aspect of successfully running of any organization or government. Ethics ensure employee’s productivity levels are up to the required standards. In my opinion, this article was included in the code of ethics by engineers because it is unfair that a particular person/company gain advantage over others. It is also dishonorable in the engineering profession and not only unfair to other engineers/companies but also to the public. When violating this article, there is also potential of violating others which can result in further problems and more severe discipline. Corruption is a very serious matter and should be brought to light in all other professions, not just engineering in an effort to maintain law and order. This article is an important component of an overall strategy and should not be eliminated. In some areas of the world this article is not enforced or the government is already too corrupt and nothing is done regarding this issue. Ethics deals with actions with adequate standard of attitudes, behavior that is pleasing to the people or organizations. Every job has a code of ethical conduct that is supposed to be is followed. It is very necessary to understand that ethical rules must apply and obey with basis of what is right and wrong which is written in the law. That is why there are professions that have organizations or associations which have the method of ethical conducts or standard.
Ethics are the driving force behind good business. Every ethical choice made by a professional can and will have a much different outcome than any unethical choice. Bad ethics can ruin many aspects of a business and as (Gaye-Anderson, 2007) states how quite easily the lives and professional reputation of the employees can even be severally damaged (para. 3). Everything from morale to motivation can be severely affected by poor ethical choices. Customers will take their business elsewhere. Employees will abandon ship. Other, competing businesses reap the benefits of the bad moral choices. Ultimately, the entire business can be brought down by one poor ethical choice.
Engineering is one of the important majors. Engineers are design, build and provide different solutions that serve the community. We know that engineering profession can affect public safety. it can lead to a hazardous mistakes. Learning ethics is important to avoid those mistakes. It helps to avoid issues before they arise and recognize the solutions. Without ethics people would not have ideas of right and wrong and help to choose right actions.

If their judgment is rejected in circumstances where under threat security, health, property or welfare of the people, they must notify the employer or client, and, if necessary, other authorities.
Mechanical engineers have a responsibility of ensuring they abide by general ethics as that have been laid down by engineering bodies such as the American Society of Mechanical engineers. Engineers have to sound alarm whenever safety violations are breached or when the organization does not perform required procedures that may endanger lives. It is the engineer’s duty to inform members of the public whenever legal bodies fail to nullify projects which may cause disasters.
