It has come to my concern as the manager of the Information Technology branch in our company, that our employees lack some important computer skills. I often receive requests to solve many trivial problems that show a lack of skill when operating a computer. Our employees work with computers every day to help our customers. They deal with sensitive data for both our own company and our customers. To combat this I propose we create mandatory computer skill classes covering some of the basics to assure no issues arise. These classes would be mainly aimed at people who work within our offices and deal with sensitive data. Skills with basic Windows usage to know how to effectively use their computers. Constantly our department receives a ticket about their computer acting up, when in truth it is the user not correctly using Windows. Another skill would be file management. Our employees deal with many files and information that need to be organized correctly. Being able to correctly locate folders and information would greatly boost efficiency within our company. Backing up these files would also be required to assure no information for our customers is lost from computer error. Basic email usage would also be necessary. Our employees constantly use email to communicate with one another. They need to effectively manage their emails and know what each function does. Finally, education about proper security. Being able recognize a threat from an email or a suspicious application would greatly improve our security. Our users can very easily cause a great deal of harm to our company and even our customers if they fall to one of these phishing attempts. To ensure all the employees are competent, they need to develop a system to measure this competency. For example, they can do assessments to gauge competency. Besides that, they should provide compulsory and supplementary training to their employees to add in value and skills. Mentoring systems also can be implemented to ensure sharing of knowledge and experiences.

The helpdesk specialists are the frontline support for end-users. It is vital that the specialists are adequately trained to support the users effectively. In order to do so they must be fully training is a wide variety of areas. Gomm (2005) suggests that helpdesk specialists are leaving their jobs because of lack of opportunity and a lack of training. In this paper I will propose a training guideline that will support helpdesk specialists in the areas of personal and computer safety, communication skills, problem resolution and incident response, along with procedures for collecting and analyzing computer evidence. Gomm (2005) states that based on the research conducted with 1,000 helpdesk specialists an alarming 66% have no information technology (IT) qualifications, and 33% have not had any IT training within the last 12 months. These findings are leading to helpdesk specialists leaving their jobs. By implementing a training program, as found in this paper, the specialists will be better prepared for their job functions and may be less likely to look to change their job.
The skills that I am referring to are Oral and Written Communication, Interpersonal, and Teamwork skill. These sets of skills have been identified US dept of Labor and other universities and learning Centers as the essential skills every person needs.
In Microsoft training and developing employees is very important aspect of the company’s day-to-day operations. At Microsoft all employees are “thrown” into normal business operations right away. Since 1975 the company has used the method “learn as you go”. It depends heavily on learning by doing rather than learn and then do it. The company recruits young and talented specialists from colleges and universities. The company is well known to look for four important qualities in all-new hires: ambition, IQ, technical expertise, and business judgment. Experienced employees conduct interviews and it is very important to note that the team managers are the people that actually hire, not the recruiters. That gives the managers the flexibility of selecting and hiring the best of the best. It is an interesting fact that only two to three percent of all recruits expressing an interest in Microsoft are hired. Once hired the new employees are assigned to teams where they start doing projects by close supervision. The new employees are expected to know the specifics of their job responsibilities and how to perform different tasks. That is why in May 1997 Microsoft launched the new Microsoft Skills 2000 initiative. The purpose of Skills 2000 is to reduce the growing gap between company needs and available skills by reaching out to employees in the computing work force as well as those interested in developing an IS career. Microsoft pays relatively low salaries and often does not pay for overtime, but employees are compensated by excellent benefits. The company offers Savings Plus 401(k) plan, Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), paid maternity and paternity leave, tuition reimbursement, annual bonuses, etc. The company’s culture is also an important HR factor as it refers to employee motivation, development and quality of work. Microsoft has anti-bureaucratic atmosphere that gives the employees the freedom to take risks.
