The Effects of Computers on Everyday Life
Computers have changed the way that the world works in many different ways. Some of these changes are positive and some of these changes have had negative effects on our lives. From an industrial standpoint most of these changes have been helpful to businesses and the economy. In the medical field computers have had an impact in many different areas, ranging from the way appointments are made to the carrying out of everyday tasks.
The biggest and easiest seen change that computers have had on today’s society can be seen in the workplace. Before computers became an office tool and were made available to the average employee, paperwork and sharing information in an office setting was done by many different individuals constantly filing and looking up figures. Now a computer can store large amounts of information that is readily available to virtually anyone with the click of a mouse button. One person can complete a job that in a time before computers would take many. Computers have made file cabinets and libraries almost obsolete. Businesses can share information nation or even world wide in a matter of seconds. For example, a word document file can be sent from an office in New York to an office in Los Angeles in under a minute, in the past this same information would have taken a week to be sent through the mail. Computers have changed the way that factories are run too. On an assembly line, before computers every job, no matter how easy or difficult, had to be done by an employee. Now, however, computers run machines and do most of these tasks.
Another big change that computers have made in our everyday lives is that with the internet we can now access information about just about anything, at any time, and we can do this from the comfort of our own home. Credit cards can be used to do on-line shopping at virtually any store. E-mail has changed the way that people communicate, it is usually free of charge and mail is sent and received in minutes. Devices such as video phones and web-cams make video conferencing possible. This allows people to see who they are talking to in “real-time” even if they are on opposite ends of the map.
The major technology change that has had the greatest impact on the quality of my life is the spread of uses for the Internet. The wide range of uses for the internet has extremely benefited my life. I use the Internet to keep in touch with my family from College and with my brother who is in the Air Force in Georgia. I also use the Internet to talk to my long-distance boyfriend so my phone bill doesn't get too large. I also use the Internet in a highly educational way. Not only can I take my college courses online (which is much better for me because I teach myself much better than a professor or teacher can teach me), but it can teach me about anything else I would like to know.
The internet has made gaining online material more accessible with fast and instant possibilities. “With a few clicks, people can search virtual catalogs, place orders, track shipments, and update information in corporate databases.” (Carr 85). With technology advancing and where it is right now it is so easy to order things that are needed the next day and have them at your doorstep. You can easily change any information in an instant as well. “The net has become essential to their work, school or social lives, and often all three.”(Carr 9). Without the internet education would not be near as advanced as it is now, jobs would be made more difficult, with having to rely on written thoughts and
The reading Agent Provocateur? The African Origin and American Life of a statue From Cote d’Ivoire by Monica Blackmun Visona focuses on the ever-changing narrative of an object as it moves through different cultures, times and spaces, as well as how these different environments can change an object's meaning or influence. Furthermore, this article discusses how a singular object can transform the relationships between different arts versus different cultures.
The Kyoto Protocol was a valiant effort that bound developed countries to decrease their domestic emissions to 5 percent below the 1990 level by 2012 in order to reduce global CO2 emissions. Most industrial countries fulfilled their goals on paper. However, global CO2 emissions actually increased by 58 percent (Mystrick).Although many claim the United States’ refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol was the reason for its failure, the mechanisms of the protocol likely would have rendered it unsuccessful either way. Only already-industrialized nations were responsible for reducing emissions. In general, these nations did not produce real and responsible plans for emissions reduction. Instead of finding ways to change their industries and consumption patterns, the countries merely outsourced their production to third-world nations. Nothing within the protocol itself could stop this fallback to human nature. The Canadian prime minister described the Kyoto Protocol as having ‘very few teeth…’ There were no real penalties for not meeting the stipulations (Le Page).
The Kyoto protocol is an international agreement designed to address the global problem that is climate change, by trying to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Kyoto is at present signed by 192 parties, 191 of which are states while one is a regional economic integration organisation (UNFCCC) [1]. International agreement is necessary to address this important issue, since climate change affects every single country of the world and can lead to dangerous interferences with the climates system if action is not taken (Y. Feng et al 2008) [3]. The Kyoto protocol was very specific and stated that “The Kyoto Protocol is a legally binding agreement under which industrialized countries
It has only been a small amount of time since computers were invented, they were originally simple and were only capable to do simple task. Now they have become complex devices that are capable of doing tasks that only humans were able to do and they can already do it at a more efficient rate and with better accuracy. Today, we see that computers have become extremely helpful and useful in our lives, to the point that some people even might seem addicted to them. In the past few years computers have been developing at an unbelievable rate and have begun to replace humans in the workplace.
Computers are used by many different people in many different ways. This era particularly has progressed extremely fast in computer use and the types of computers people use. One particular field that caught my eye was computer uses for medical purposes. I doubt that the medical field had the advancements and usage of computers many years before us but now they seem to be more releveant in every aspect of our life even health wise. From health monitors, or even better ways to keep health records computers are becoming essential in this field.
Today, computers influence all lifestyles, and all different types of businesses. They have become an essential part of everyday life, from chatting, to e-mail, to commerce, to gaming. Almost every person in the United States has had some use on the computer. Since the technology age began, computers have become a mainstay in American and world society as much as the telephone, the automobile, and the television.
Another example of the change in our technology over the last century is the change in the computer. In 1946, the first electronic computer called the ENIAC took up the space of a large room. Instead of using transistors and IC chips, the ENIAC used vacuum tubes. Compared to many computers now, the ENIAC is about as powerful as a small calculator. That may not be much, but it is a milestone because there would not be computers today if it were not for the ENIAC. As the years passed, the computer became smaller and more powerful. Today, more than half of the American population has a computer in their home. The personal computers today are thousands of times more powerful than the most powerful computers fifty years ago.
Computers are ubiquitous. As our society grows towards being a culture connected through the Internet, and as prices of these machines gradually decrease, more and more have been purchased by families for their homes and as a result, children are beginning to learn to use the computer at an earlier age. Even if computers are not presently available at the home, a child will almost certainly be exposed to one at school or the library, among other places. Adults today are amazed at the amount of knowledge a child has at such an early age – children generally find that computers gives them a sense of power and accomplishment. “A computer is nothing more than a box of circuits that perform software level tasks for a user. Even the software is little more than instructions to the hardware to perform specified tasks. Therefore, a computer, in and of itself is, neither positive nor negative. Its inherent goodness or badness is determined by the user.” With that being said, there are many positive, with as many negative associations that come along with owning a computer.
Technology has changed modern society drastically, both positively and negatively. Technology has influenced every aspect of our life, making it simpler but not necessarily better. Albert Einstein was concerned about the advancement of technology. "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction."1 Undoubtedly, what has changed the most are communication, the spread of information, and how business is practiced. Consequently, practically everyone knows how to use a computer, connect to the Internet, or use a smartphone. This is demonstrated by the way the Internet is used daily by millions of people to communicate, to sell, advertise, retrieve, and share information. Thanks to the Internet, information from anywhere in the world is at our fingertips. As a result, the advancement of technology has changed our life in many ways including; sharing of information, communication, business, education, social interaction, simplifying everyday tasks, replacing basic skills and jobs.
The computer evolution has been an amazing one. There have been astonishing achievements in the computer industry, which dates back almost 2000 years. The earliest existence of the computer dates back to the first century, but the electronic computer has only been around for over a half-century. Throughout the last 40 years computers have changed drastically. They have greatly impacted the American lifestyle. A computer can be found in nearly every business and one out of every two households (Hall, 156). Our Society relies critically on computers for almost all of their daily operations and processes. Only once in a lifetime will a new invention like the computer come about.
In todays world computers are very useful because there is weather forcasting and many other things. People can forcast weather by this process by computers . Advertising is one of the most progressive field these days . Computer animation is the art of creating moving images by this use of computers . We can use use internation network (internet) to check mail, play games, find other's addresses , etc. Scientists also use computers for their experiments . There are some documents to type. For example MS Word , MS Exel , etc . We can do our school project also by using computers. There is one thing which is very conveinient for us it is that we can talk or chat with people who are in another country by using google talk , yahoo messenger , etc . It is not at all expensive . It is better than using a telephone or a mobile . We can also send voicemails through google talk , yahoo messenger , etc . We can play many games using a computer . For example pinball , soltaire , spider soltaire , etc . Believe it or not, but the age of computers is upon us. I believe Computers are not only here to stay, but in my opinion computers are the wave of the future. Only a device like the computer can change the way we work, live, and think. I see computers taking us places where no man has gone before. students can receive an education from their own home Taking classes online is an option that a growing number of students are taking advantage of. These classes are making a college education available for students who are not able to attend a traditional university or college. Computers are taking us places where a lot of us thought was not possible. Truly it is my belief and opinion, the computer is one of the most incredible inventions of this time period or any other.
Computer technology not only has solved problems but also has created some, including a certain amount of culture shock as individuals attempt to deal with the new technology. A major role of computer science has been to alleviate such problems, mainly by making computer systems cheaper, faster, more reliable, easier to use.
The influence of the electronic devices, multimedia and computers are the things that dealt with our daily life. Especially the internet that is now giving more importance to each and every one, by giving the newest outstanding media that surely will give the outmost future ahead of us. (Temmel)
