Title: Computer Literacy
Specific Purpose: make my audience aspire to be more computer literate.
Preview of Main Points: what is computer literacy, how it affects you, and finally what you can do to benefit.
Introduction
(Attention Getter) Who here believes they know about computers? Well I am sure that with only the exception of a select few in this building most of you could not even tell me what processor is inside your computer, much less be able to repair your computer after a small virus attack.
(Central Idea (Introduce topic and relate it to your audience)) It’s okay, well, no: it is not. You are computer illiterates whom for your lack of knowledge get tricked into buying an expensive items and or services at two to three times its actual value. For example apple products that offer nothing special but a brand, and extended warranties. While not all extended warranties are bad the majority are just a shameless way to obtain your money.

Being computer illiterate can affect your job and credibility as a professional.
A. People believe that they can go through life with little to no computer skills. This is impossible. Even cash registers are computers, and unless you plan on flipping burgers for the rest of your life, you will sooner or later come into contact with a computer. A perfect example of computer literacy in the work force is that of Patricia Robin McCartney, a Senior Clinical Nursing Instructor, at the Washington Hospital Center Georgetown Scholars Program, Who states in her 2010 article, what is Computer Literacy? Found in the American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing. That for her to be able to do her job she must be proficient in communication, monitoring, data access, project management, research and the use of hardware and software to document patient
My Chromebook is dead and I don't havve the charger. I left it at my dad's house when I left for school this morning. I don't have any way to check my grades, do my online homework, or look anything up on the internet. Without Chromebooks, students are completely disconnected from school. That's why the Chesterfeild County Public School Boardshould continue letting us have our Chromebooks. Chromebooks help students with their responsibility, they're eco-friendly, and they're efficient.
Using the PATCH Assessment scale to assess my attitudes toward computers in health care, I scored a total of 80 points. Scoring 80 points puts me in the category of, “Confident of ability to use a variety of computer programs. Sees computers as beneficial in the development of society. Enthusiastic view of the potential of computer use in healthcare.” These results mean that I feel confident while using computers. I am knowledgeable about them and have used them throughout my education. I am very familiar with doing class work online, typing papers, and searching for information on the internet. I do see computers as beneficial to society. They help people gain knowledge, communicate, and be creative. Without the use of computers, communicating and our education would become slow. Computers allow for students, especially, to learn at incredible speeds. It can
Though being exposed to technologies like computers from an early age may have given us the ability to do things more efficiently, technology has also made us less dependent on ourselves. Claudia Wallis, editor for Time, in her article makes known in The Multitasking Generation, “That level of multiprocessing and interpersonal connectivity is now so commonplace that it’s easy to forget how quickly it came about. Fifteen years ago, most home computers weren’t even linked to the Internet” (63). There are many things that students are able to do on their computer that their parents aren't even aware of or that the parents couldn’t do themselves. My parents always tell of how looking through the library’s card catalog and searching for the books they needed only to find out that they have been taken out. Computers have allowed us to do many things faster for example, write much faster than a typewriter or pen and paper and correct typing errors without starting over. The computers and technology we now have makes it easier to almost anything and with technology so easily at your fingertips it o...
Nursing is a field that has several diverse options. These options include, bedside nursing, administration, education, case management, forensics, and numerous other possibilities. A new field of nursing has emerged, nursing informatics. Nursing informatics (NI) is defined by the American Nurses Association (2008) as a specialty that “integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.” Simply defined, nurses are using the combination of technology and nursing knowledge to care for patients and improving outcomes. Nurses are doing this by collecting data, converting that into information, and then into knowledge, where it then can be applied to their critical thinking skills to better care for their patient (Finkalman & Kenner, 2013)
Technology is a controversial issue in today’s world and especially in my world; it is important to understand that my father owns and operates a successful computer sales and repair business and so my knowledge of computer usage is quite extensive having not only listened to my father, but also having completed a high school computer internship. I am also currently working in a Technology Fellowship program. When it comes to the topic of technology, most of us will agree that technology surrounds us in today’s world—from television, smart phones, video games, tablets, to computers—we can readily access multitudes of information by simply accessing a computer internet search or turning on the television news. Technology has been a part of our
Technology is stated as the scientific method and material used to achieve a commercial or industrial objective. To go one step further, nursing technology is using a tool to advance nursing practice. “The Institute of medicine identified that technology as a viable method of enhancing patient care delivery and improving staff productivity” Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003 page). Because inadequate nursing staff causes shortcuts to be taken, there are mistakes made that could have possibly been prevented. Errors by nursing staff were variously reported as being responsible for between 44,000 and 98,000 hospital deaths per year. Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003). Technology can have a large impact on nursing. In the past 5 to 10 years, computerized patient records have increased less than 10%. This number shows us that we are still not embracing technology to its full potential. Today in most hospital systems computerized electronic charting is being used. Many hospitals have many different systems for...
Technology and innovation have transformed the way people function personally and professionally. In the past, writing and mailing a letter was standard but now most people send electronic messages and text messages to phones. Healthcare has been changing tremendously as well, not only are paper charts and records becoming obsolete, but now many facilities are sharing test results, visit information details, and prescribed drug lists. This move into the digital age has helped improve healthcare by cutting costs in the long-term, increasing efficiency with decreased wait times, and reducing medical errors. This evolving technology expansion, commonly referred to as nursing informatics has created many opportunities for nursing professionals with information technology experience to move into this growing field.
Though this class I was able to see that being a nurse without being able to use different technologies is becoming less desirable, since many hospitals have computerized most of the processes to save money and reduce the time spent on documentation. Unless you are able to use or learn these different technologies, which could be hard without basic technical knowledge, it could be hard to navigate through to do the
Informatics has integrated itself into the nursing practice daily. Sensmeier (2010) states, “Nursing informatics is known today as the "specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice." A main part of a nurse’s job is gathering data and turning it into information that all of the healthcare takers can use. For example, a nurse must take vital signs as part of their “data” and in turn put it into the computer system as information. This information is used to help care for the patient. Informatics impacts a nurse’s duties because of the technology utilized each day. The use of this technology developed transforms the nursing career because it improves patient safety, quality, and efficiency of care delivery (Sensmeier, 2010). Within the technology, nursing care is ultimately impro...
With technology rapidly changing as fast as we blink our eyes, it is important for people to learn as much as possible about the computer world if they want to maintain a decent lifestyle because the world we live in revolving around those technologies. As McKee points out, “most jobs now require intelligence and technical skill” (1). Each year, there is something either added or modified to computers, which forces people to learn computer literacy at a steady pace. While some love computers, others despise them. When comparing people’s attitudes towards computers, statistics show a gender gap that proves most females’ attitudes are drastically different from the attitudes of males. Several studies prove that women not only lack an interest in technology, but they also chose not to enroll in computer classes. Since computers and technology play an enormous role in the world today, more technology professionals are needed. It is extremely important for more women to become knowledgeable in these areas. Swain and Harvey argue, “This technology gender gap is affecting half our population and causing it to be unprepared to contribute to the demands of a high-tech twenty-first century” (17). While this may not seem like a serious issue to some, it is an issue that will ultimately lead to a bigger problem if not handled immediately. So why are there so few women in the technology field? To answer that question, I must first find out why are there so few women in the technology and computer classes, considering that this atmosphere is the most common place where the interest for computers is born.
aspect of our lives, we are faced with computers. They are in our classrooms, cars, and even used
Technology is all around us these days. If you don't understand the basics of computers and how to run one your choices of jobs and things to do are limited. Almost everywhere you go and every job you can think of uses computers. For this reason, computers have become a big part of the education system. I'm planning on teaching elementary students so I researched the impact that computers have had on teachers and students.
According to Blais and Hayes (2011) “New technologies, particularly information systems, are changing and improving nursing practice, education, research, and administration” (p. 290). However, although the use of technology and informatics can be very beneficial for nursing education and practice, nurses and student nurses have to be aware of the challenges of these technological changes to maintain nursing care quality. Currently, technologies and informatics are used in computerized patient records, evidence-based practice, or telehealth among other things. Moreover, “Several issues related to the increased use of technology in nursing include ethics, confidentiality, data integrity and caring” (Blais & Hayes, 2011, p.
I cannot forget how excited I was when I first bought my own computer. Like a mother who spends time sewing and knitting for her newborn baby, I spent hours and hours to sparkle my computer. I waited a long time to buy a brand new computer. I had to work more hours and saved money to buy a computer. I did not want to buy a cheap computer, but I wanted to buy a professional one. Was I professional on computer? No! I was not. I did not even know how to type, but I was sure that my expensive com puter could make me a computer expert. 17 inches monitor, color printer, two speakers and well-designed fancy keyboard made me just happy by looking at them on my desk.
From classroom activities to space flight and everything in between, computers are a vital part of daily life. Everything we do and every aspect of our life is affected by modern technology like the computers. Computers let us dissect any sort of data. Computers makes us reflect, hence we develop. Because of computers and the Internet, we can talk with individuals from diverse nations, and even see them via webcam. Computers have their weaknesses like they have a negative effect on individuals' health. One of the risky parts of any machine is the screen. Computers make individuals dependent. Computers are hampering individuals' improvement in regular life. We don't read printed books any longer, since we can listen and read on the web. We invest more of a chance talking online than talking face to face. Overuse of machines has numerous negative impacts, for example, creating physical/behavioral sicknesses, harming family connections and diminishing scholarly study.
