Nursing Informatics is important to the nursing profession since nurses’ work in information-intensive environment. The advanced technology available in recent years allows nurses to collect data from patents, share the information with other nurses and healthcare providers to provide better care and knowledge that can be gather from the information. Information can be used in clinical care, teaching environments, billing and other environments, with regards to privacy policies. The advancement in technology is allowing nurses to spend more time caring for their patients rather that spending time documenting incidents. New devices and applications are allowing patents and other healthcare providers to provide better care by allowing them to …show more content…
Prior to this class I was able to understand how technology reduced paperwork but this class allowed me to understand that technology is more than just reducing paperwork. It is helping healthcare providers share patient information with other healthcare providers to provide better care for patients (subject to privacy), track their patient’s records (electronic medical records(EMR), and computer based patient records (CPR)), use monitoring devices to record measurements direct into EMR, allows automatic supply orders and billing based on inputs from the documentations and so much more. These advanced technologies are also helping nurses track and create a better care plan and better documentation to ensure the utmost quality …show more content…
Though this class I was able to see that being a nurse without being able to use different technologies is becoming less desirable, since many hospitals have computerized most of the processes to save money and reduce the time spent on documentation. Unless you are able to use or learn these different technologies, which could be hard without basic technical knowledge, it could be hard to navigate through to do the
As the evolution of healthcare from paper documentation to electronic documentation and ordering, the security of patient information is becoming more difficult to maintain. Electronic healthcare records (EHR), telenursing, Computer Physician Order Entry (CPOE) are a major part of the future of medicine. Social media also plays a role in the security of patient formation. Compromising data in the information age is as easy as pressing a send button. New technology presents new challenges to maintaining patient privacy. The topic for this annotated bibliography is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Nursing informatics role is imperative to assist in the creation and maintenance of the ease of the programs and maintain regulations compliant to HIPAA. As a nurse, most documentation and order entry is done electronically and is important to understand the core concepts of HIPAA regarding electronic healthcare records. Using keywords HIPAA and informatics, the author chose these resources from scholarly journals, peer reviewed articles, and print based articles and text books. These sources provide how and when to share patient information, guidelines and regulation d of HIPAA, and the implementation in relation to electronic future of nursing.
Working as a professional registered nurse in the hospital, I realized how nurses struggle to find balance between devoting the time charting on the computer and spending time taking care of the patients. Moreover, I’ve seen nurses where they get discouraged trying to find this balance between patients and charting. As a bedside nurse, I would love nothing, but to tend to the needs of my patients. The length of time consume on electronic charting all day, take the very essence of bedside nursing away from nurses, which is caring. Reducing the time of nurses being occupied on charting by eliminating redundant tasks while conforming to their standard, are the changes I would like to make. These are a few of the reasons why I wanted to pursue a degree in informatics. I would advocate for nurses everywhere and to become an instrument in providing them a better electronic health system to work on. Pursuing the degree in nursing informatics will benefit me in
According to the author, nursing practice needs to stay current with technological advances while keeping its identity as a patient focused profession. Nurses use technology to improve care from a patient?s perspective, both in quality of care and cost. At the same time, nurses must learn to balance technological knowledge with personal skills, thus providing optimum clinical care while maintaining a person-focused relationship with the patient.
A bachelor’s degree is required for this role, however, a master’s degree is recommended. The NI assumes both the technical roles which closely involve the design of information systems, and the less technical positions, such as project manager for the adoption of a new application or trainer of the users. They bring institutional knowledge and experience to the table when applications are designed to meet the needs of the users (AMIA, 2015). Overall, the application of nursing informatics knowledge is empowering and NP, NE, and NA require it in achieving patient centered
As technology continues to evolve so does the need for healthcare facilities to continually maintain a higher level of competence that runs parallel to electronic and scientific advancement. Comparatively, the structure of hi-tech facilities, such as medical centers and clinics prepared with new amenities has enhanced the industry scale of communities by working in the healthcare arena. Likewise, technological innovations which help diagnose a variety of infections and disorders has helped in assisting patients in receiving increased quality care. As a result, patient care as a whole has positively been affected within the last decade. Furthermore, it only make sense that more personalized and precise problem-solving methods and procedures will be devised in the future. Accordingly, the following paragraphs will analyze the significance of the Meaningful Use program for nurses, nursing, national health policy, patient outcomes, and population health associated with the collection and use of the programs core criteria.
Nurses are viewed as knowledge workers regardless of their specialty. Nursing knowledge is generated by Nursing Informatics (NI), through the process of science and practice and using the theory of “data, information, knowledge, and wisdom.” The main goal of NI is to facilitate communication through innovated technology that will promote positive patient outcomes. NI, recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA) in 1992, has increased the visibility and value of nursing practice. The implementation of the previously mentioned method promotes nursing beliefs, individualizes nursing care and implements nursing language (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to use the nursing informatics concepts to explore and understand ICU psychosis/delirium in order to provide evidence-practice that can limit its occurrences.
This paper will identify the use of Electronic Health Records and how nursing plays an important role. Emerging in the early 2000’s, utilizing Electronic Health Records have quickly become a part of normal practice. An EHR could help prevent dangerous medical mistakes, decrease in medical costs, and an overall improvement in medical care. Patients are often taking multiple medications, forget to mention important procedures/diagnoses to providers, and at times fail to follow up with providers. Maintaining an EHR could help tack data, identify patients who are due for preventative screenings and visits, monitor VS, & improve overall quality of care in a practice. Nurse informaticists play an important role in the adaptation, utilization, and functionality of an EHR. The impact the EHR could have on a general population is invaluable; therefore, it needs special attention from a trained professional.
In conclusion, technology has changed the world, as we knew it. Positive and negative come with change. The goal of the ACA, HIPPA, and EHRs is achieve positive patient outcomes, while protecting the integrity, trust and confidentiality, and decreasing health care cost. Privacy is a fundamental right of a patient, and nurses are expected to maintain confidentiality (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2014). A breach in confidentiality will result in lack of trust between nurse and patients. As a nurse, it is my responsibility to ensure my patients privacy, and to provide nursing care that is patient centered, not technology centered.
Privacy and confidentiality are essential rights of the public society. Shielding those rights, with respect to an individual’s personal health information, is the nurses ethical and legal obligation as health care providers. As new demands of advanced technology use in health are is increasing, it is very significant for nurses to maintain the privacy and confidentially as the professional connection of their patients and colleagues are dependent on it (Gorea RK, Gorea A, Gorea A, 2016)
Information Systems/Technology and patient care technology for the improvement and transformation of health care is an important part of the DNP. Technology has transformed every aspect of human life in positive ways. Technology brought efficiency and improved healthcare deliverance system. Healthcare technologies enabled practitioners to better understand disease process and how to implement best treatment plan. DNP programs across the country embrace information systems and technology in their nursing curriculum because, it prepares nursing students to be innovative and deliver best care (AACN, 2006). DNP graduates must have the ability to use technology to analyze and disseminate critical information to find solutions that
“I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy – I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it.” Art Williams describes people who are looking for the easy option with this quote. Something may be simple, but not necessarily easy to do for most people. It’s the people who willingly do the task many times, which make it look easy. Repetition improves skill to its greatest. Nursing school isn’t the easiest to overcome, but if you study and are willing to put in the effort, then you will eventually succeed at being a qualified nurse. Nurses are a necessity because they are the ones that spend more direct time with the patient, they are on the Frontline of administering the patients treatment. When you are a patient, nurses are your
Technology is stated as the scientific method and material used to achieve a commercial or industrial objective. To go one step further, nursing technology is using a tool to advance nursing practice. “The Institute of medicine identified that technology as a viable method of enhancing patient care delivery and improving staff productivity” Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003 page). Because inadequate nursing staff causes shortcuts to be taken, there are mistakes made that could have possibly been prevented. Errors by nursing staff were variously reported as being responsible for between 44,000 and 98,000 hospital deaths per year. Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003). Technology can have a large impact on nursing. In the past 5 to 10 years, computerized patient records have increased less than 10%. This number shows us that we are still not embracing technology to its full potential. Today in most hospital systems computerized electronic charting is being used. Many hospitals have many different systems for...
Nursing Informatics is a nursing field that involves record keeping and focuses on finding ways to improve information management and communications in nursing to improve efficiency, reduce costs and enhance the quality of patient care. This field is primarily administrative but plays a part in patient care and quality of health care. There are other types of nurses, but many people focus on the nurses who perform the medical treatments with the doctors. This is evident in many films, TV shows, and in other popular media outlets. However, many people do not know what nursing informatics is nor pay attention to that side of nursing which involves the documentation of records and other miscellaneous items, use of advances in technology to improve
William Goossen’s theory can be applied in nursing practice to develop nursing informatics skills and knowledge, as well as develop technological system competencies among nurses to collect, process, retrieve and communicate pertinent information across health care organizations (Goossen, 2000). This theory is highly applicable in addressing matters related to electronic health records, which are currently characterized with issues of privacy and confidentiality in relation to storage, retrieval and reproduction of patient health information. The model also provides broad applicability in guiding research at any clinical setting and contributes to the discipline of nursing by simplifying and enhancing documentation and storage of patient’s health information and by allowing better utilization of nursing resources (Elkind, 2009).
