We live in an age of ever growing technology and computer mediated communication (CMC). CMC is growing and evolving, changing the way in which we communicate both personally, professionally, verbally and non-verbally. Communication skills are essential to human relationships and our ability to understand one another. The act of transferring a message from one individual to another can prove to be challenging and difficult. These skills are not automatic and must be worked at in order to enhance effectiveness and decrease miscommunication.
The time in a single day that I communicate using my phone via text and/or computer varies from day to day. Sending personal or professional communications by either text or computer are limited transactions during my day. I prefer to talk in person when situations allow even if my only option is video teleconference. CMC can decrease non-verbal clues that are imperative to decoding messages, potentially increasing misperceptions of intent. This intent verses impact can cause strain on interactions both professionally and personally. A relationship can be compromised, a business transaction damaged, or derogation to understanding when messages are improperly decoded.

Being able to pick up on non-verbal mannerisms will aid in our ability to understand more clearly. For example, emoticons, using all caps, and punctuations help paint a picture. However, e-mails and text do not always convey your message. Due to the fact many people use the internet and phones to talk or text, the percentage of face-to-face conversations are decreasing. A decrease in conversations can lead to lack of experience, which in turn leads to more awkward and poor communication. The ability to talk to others in reality is vital, for many important conversations are held face-to-face, like job interviews. If a certain person spends most conversations online, it will lead to poor communication skills in reality when it is necessary.
