When it comes to leading others it is a task/ position where you never stop learning. In order to be an effective leader you must adapt and continuous grow in your leadership role. Growing up I heard the quote by William Burroughs, when you stop growing you start dying. I believe this true because when you settle with what you have or know you tend to miss out on better opportunities.
I want to be a leader that never stops learning. When thinking back on previous leaders I admire and skills I hope to adapt I think about things that is not only beneficial to me but my team. I have provided a list of skills that I believe will help emerging leaders that I found beneficial.
Openminded, people come from different backgrounds and cultures which can bring diversity to a team. Diversity is something I encourage in all aspects of life. Being a leader that encourages others, not only builds a stronger bond but encourages innovation.
Have poise. Be a leader that carries their self well. I was always told dress for success. How you carry yourself also shows your confidence. If you are not competent in your position how do you expect others to respect you in your leadership role?
As leader it is important you learn as much as possible to help lead your team and to assist clients. Being equipped with the skills and knowledge will help others find confidence in you and your team will trust you to lead them. When I first became a leader I was scared because I was going to manage two new employees in a position. Later on I shared how scared I was when I first started and my team was amazed to hear how I was scared. They said, they could not tell because I carried my self and spoke with confidence. Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. I believe that it is vital to talk to others and get others input before making decisions. In the school, I ask other students their opinions on different events and I bring them back to the council frequently. Another leadership ability I possess is creativity. I always attempt to come up with creative and unique ideas to contribute to the council. For example, in meetings I always attempt to share new and different ideas to benefit the council. An important skill for leaders to possess is organization. I show this trait by using a binder to organize my agendas and showing up to every meeting.
Being a leader you need to be in tune with your talents, strength’s, and weaknesses. Personally I feel I have many skills and talents. I am a great friend, I’m trustworthy and dependable. I can step up to the plate if needed and I can take control of certain situations without being told to. I love writing and being able to express my feelings or thoughts through writing and poetry. Along with my talents and skills I also have weaknesses. Knowing your weaknesses is twice as important as knowing your strengths in my opinion. One weakness of mine is being motivated. Once I start a task I will finish it and put 150% effort into it, but actually starting the task is my problem. Another weakness of mine is change. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day.
