Though we seem many years away from interplanetary travel, a project called Mars One wishes to establish a colony of humans on Mars by 2026. They plan to send a crew of four on a one-way craft every 26 months. An important factor in the success of these missions are the people selected to live on Mars and their influence on this new society. They should have traits that will benefit and sustain the colony on Mars. Therefore, the four individuals selected should display traits of resourcefulness and adaptability. They should also be able to work well with each other.
Resourcefulness is the ability to deal and cope with difficult situations and find solutions. Resourcefulness is linked with creativity because to fix a problem, one might need to find a solution that is new. A resourceful person looks beyond the instruction manual and into his own knowledge and experiences. In the novel The Martian by Andy Weir, the protagonist, Mark Watney is stranded on Mars. He grows potatoes, an incredible feat, and chemically creates his

It is important for astronauts to adapt both physically and psychologically. Universe Today, an astronomy site, states that “Mars is a completely hostile environment to human life, combining extreme cold with an unbreathable atmosphere and intense radiation” (Williams). However, people cannot simply decide to be more resistant to the radiation or adapt to be able to the thin carbon dioxide atmosphere of Mars. The real test of adaptability is being able to adapt to the completely different lifestyle of Mars. It is completely different from life on Earth. If something breaks, you cannot call someone to fix it or go to a hardware store. People who are adaptable can also make the best out of a bad situation. Adaptability is necessary to any society, but it is even more important in a Martian one, where everything is completely different than on
Tracy K. Smith’s “Life on Mars” is a collection of poetry dealing mainly in the search for a sense of purpose and the nature of people. The books is something of an elegy as a whole with many poems pertaining to death and the author’s struggle with the loss of her father. The poems are at once poignant and gentle in tone and leave questions than can only be answered in multiple readings. The book is segmented in four parts that travel through different topics and types of poetry. The mood ranges from passionate accounts of Orwellian politics to soft recollections of a lovers embrace; throughout the book Smith brings in references to pop culture, science, and technology that incorporate seamlessly with her words.
The first one of these adaptations was conformity. This is the most widely practiced form of adaptation. Conformists buy into the conventional goals of society and they believe they need to work hard in order to achieve these goals. These people strive for success through hard work. Even if they realize that their aspirations may be a little high, they continue to follow social rules (Gomme, 2007) and “grin and bear it” (Winfree & Abadinsky, 2003) the legitimate way. If they fail to achieve their goals, they place the blame upon themselves and still strive harder to obtain
Support A: SECOND POINT: Astronaut’s health are the first priority before travelling to space however, it is proven that space exploration or staying in the space can actually affect a person’s health. Support A: According to a study done by NASA, astronauts that stays in space for six months or even longer are found to have some changes in their eyes and their vision.
After centuries of enhancement, humans were transformed into a leading species, but he gradually turned into a plant that wraps around another plant for support and survival needs.
...from the ground. These roots may very well be radishes, or rampion, which is his wife's namesake.
I believe that it is possible for Mars to have the ability to support life because of the possibility of there being water increases the probability of organisms being able to exist on Mars’ ecosystem, therefore the chance of Mars being able to sustain life. Furthermore, even if water never did or will, as a matter of fact, exist on Mars there is a chance that an organism is able to survive without it.
Humans naturally feel isolated, closed off from the world at times of their life. During such times, isolation cause humans to transform, experiencing personality or attitude changes, usually for the worst. This however is a novelty, compared to the what the botanist Mark Watney, part of the Ares 3 Mars Missions, underwent when he was abandoned on Mars, 50 million kilometers away from the nest human, after experiencing a dangerous sand storm in The Martian by Andy Weir. When the Hab, an area where astronauts can roam freely without the aide of a suit and Mark Watney’s only sanctuary, exploded, Watney lost his ability to communicate with NASA, the only entity that could talk to him and he lost all hope of survival, causing him to have to adapt
No matter what, humans only look out for their own best interest, no matter the cost and no matter the damage to the environment, the place they live. Humans on Mars are no stranger to looking out for their best interests. In “The Green Morning” Benjamin Driscoll arrived in Mars. He survived on the planet for a while but he could not get enough oxygen for his body. He hopped on a motorcycle stocked with seeds and went on his way.
As discussed in this paper, diversity consists of environmental and biological differences that can mold individual behavior. It is also evident that nurture not nature often has the greatest influence on the attitudes and personalities of an individual. So no matter the religious beliefs, personality traits, age and gender of an individual; the diversity of an individual can also be their strength if developed and nurtured properly.
However it is important to accentuate that factors influence each other and that the experience during the process of adaptation will vary.
A personality trait that lets you adjust to new conditions is the definition of adaptability. With me always had a busy schedule, things can often change at the last minute. Whether it’s in the plans that I had or in a soccer game or even at home, I’ve always adapted well to it without making a big deal about it. With a busy schedule and usually being on the road on the weekend, I adapted to doing homework in the car when necessary, staying up considerably late to take time with my animals and lastly is having a longer day at school than most other people. Therefore, this is how I see adaptability in my life
For the purpose of this paper, adaptation means the process of being adapted or changing to meet one’s needs. During the later part of the text, we see Richard Parker adapt to meet
Humans can expect to face some major challenges on an expedition to Mars. It has been proven that humanity can travel in space for over two years. Cumulatively, Sergei Constantinovich Krikalev, a Russian cosmonaut, has spent over eight-hundred and three days in Earth orbit (Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, 2005). The expedition to Mars would require the crew to endure a six month journey to the planet, a year of living on the planet, and a six months journey back to Earth. Russian cosmonaut, Valery V. Polyakoz, clocking in at four-hundred and thirty-eight days for just one stay in Earth orbit, shows humanity is capable of a twelve month round trip to Mars (Schwirtz, 2009). Earth's orbit has provided some benefits to space exploration, like the magnetic field from cosmic radiation, and the proximity to Earth if an emergency were to arise (Jones, 2009). The further humans travel away from Earth the greater the risks become. The major risks to human health on a flight to Mars, living on Mars, and returning to Earth are: radiation exposure, biological problems induced by weightlessness, spacecraft malfunctions, and psychological problems brought on by isolation.
Terraforming Mars is the process of purposely changing the known properties of Mars to satisfy safe human habitation. In order to do this, we would have to use a 1000-year timeline. A thousand year timeline is best because it would give humans the time needed to change the atmosphere of Mars, change the temperature of Mars, grow food, and more. In order for the terraforming process to work, humans must permanently live on Mars for. For humans to permanently live on Mars, a fuel source must be used. Fossil fuel sounds like the perfect candidate for this being that it puts out C02, a greenhouse gas. Which in turn would kill two birds with one stone because we need to warm the atmosphere anyway. But fossil fuels can’t be used on Mars because of the C02 atmosphere, but magnesium can be. Not only can magnesium be used in mars’ C02 atmosphere, it’s already on the planet.
Whether it be learning how to ride the subway in another country or communicating within a group to accomplish a professional goal, the ability to adapt is needed to succeed in life. In order to appreciate adjustment later, one must experience the uneasiness of new situations multiple times in their life and learn how to act accordingly. Throughout ones life, there will be an endless amount of social, business, and familial interactions to adapt to; and being good at adapting will only help retain one’s success, happiness, and sanity. The inability or unwillingness to adapt can have many negative consequences on ones future. Part of this is accepting that not everything goes according to plan at times, and one must be prepared to compromise
