Whether it be learning how to ride the subway in another country or communicating within a group to accomplish a professional goal, the ability to adapt is needed to succeed in life. In order to appreciate adjustment later, one must experience the uneasiness of new situations multiple times in their life and learn how to act accordingly. Throughout ones life, there will be an endless amount of social, business, and familial interactions to adapt to; and being good at adapting will only help retain one’s success, happiness, and sanity. The inability or unwillingness to adapt can have many negative consequences on ones future. Part of this is accepting that not everything goes according to plan at times, and one must be prepared to compromise
or alter strategies. If people do not possess the capability of adaptation to new situations or the people around them, life becomes one long, awkward, uphill battle where everyday actions become a struggle on a never-ending path of frustration. In the 21st century, living in the multiculturalist society, it is even more important that young people learn how to read social and especially cultural cues. Being able to adapt to different customs gives one so many more opportunities, whether for educational purposes or for personal fulfillment. Without adaption, there is no evolution, no betterment of the human race. Fighting adaptation leads to mental inflexibility, excessive stubbornness, and higher stress about little actions in life that would almost be effortless to those who adapt quickly.
Change is good." We hear the catchy phrase everywhere. From company slogans to motivational speeches, our world seems to impose this idea that change is always a good thing. Assuming that the change is for the better, it is probably a true statement in most cases. The root of this idea seems to come from the notion that we are dissatisfied with the state that we are in, so, in order to create a more enjoyable surrounding, we adjust. Others, however, stray from this practice, and instead of trying to adapt to the people around them, they try and change others.
The first one of these adaptations was conformity. This is the most widely practiced form of adaptation. Conformists buy into the conventional goals of society and they believe they need to work hard in order to achieve these goals. These people strive for success through hard work. Even if they realize that their aspirations may be a little high, they continue to follow social rules (Gomme, 2007) and “grin and bear it” (Winfree & Abadinsky, 2003) the legitimate way. If they fail to achieve their goals, they place the blame upon themselves and still strive harder to obtain

In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe writes how the arrival of the Christian missionaries in Umuofia intensify Okonkwo's internal conflict between changing as a new person and commit to the new changes by following the missionaries religion (which in the Igbo culture, it’s consider as being weak) vs. going his own way and follow the Igbo religion and be "manly". Okonkwo was a respected and honored man who had a lot of prosperity, but sadly his choice at the end of the book was to commit suicide. His choice had an negative impact on his clan because people look up to Okonkwo as an exemplary to the Igbo clan. Okonkwo find himself unable to adapt to the changing times as the white man comes to live among the Umuofians. As it becomes clear that you need to change to adapt to the changing society or fight for how it was before, Okonkwo realizes that he no longer can compliance the missionaries’ regulations and can’t do nothing about it, realize he can no longer can be able to function within his changing society.

The novel Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure, written by Tim Harford, is based around how one can achieve success in a unique way, through failure. Throughout the novel he teaches us powerful ways to tackle issues or problems that are thought to be unconquerable. His argument is based around one key word, Adapt. Harford reveals countless examples of failures and successes but most importantly, analyzes the practices that were used to achieve the results. The novel starts off by describing how complicated the world we live in today is. This chapter was the reason I remained engaged in the entire novel up to the very last word. He tells
Covey’s, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change”. It discuss how our basic nature is to act, and not be acted upon. As well as enabling us to choose our response to particular circumstances, this empowers us to create circumstances. Meaning, our natural instinct is to react rather than waiting for something to happen. Reacting is extreme; responding is balanced. For example: When I react, I tend to go to extremes. I do something and do it all the way. Sometimes I even go overboard. When I respond, it’s usually more balanced. I might take a small step in one direction and then see how it
Adapting to change I find is worthwhile in my eyes. I can see myself grow from what I learn and see by working on myself and change the way I use to think about the word change. I’m discovering that change is good for everyone, it breaks up the normal grove that everyone is in making the discover and learn how to adapt to change. The question that I’m going to ask myself is, am I the right person to reach my goal? You bet! I’m going to take the time and work on myself on how to deal with the fact that everything around me is bound to
Interventions suggested by the theories to adjust effectively are training to develop stress management skills such as coping strategies, orientation and proper preparation by learning social skills to survive in the new culture, learning of the host culture, especially behavioural-based social skill training, overcoming barriers to inter-group harmony and emphasizing inter-group similarities
Continuous learning is, therefore critical.”(22) This brings about greater rate in survivability and adaptability. A personal experience of mine was my first year at Carleton, has I was trying to get a grasp on my time management skills, which I still am even has this essay is being read. It began with the transition from a high school environment to that off a post-secondary, which was quite stomping, it required adapting to the new environment, learning how classes we thought, how to budget, learning to pay bills, learning to balance responsibilities while having greater autonomy etc. Has well as a lot of things which I had never dealt with, I made a lot of mistakes along the way, and still am. But the key point is with the sudden transition and changes met, constant error and feedback from my environment; professors, tutorials, landlords, managers each motivated me in one form or the other and resulted in me being more adaptable and efficient in my performance and productivity has a whole in various aspects of my everyday
I cannot expect others to only adapt for me, but I need to also try to adapt for others and meet them in the middle. Employers also need to consider cultural requirements of their employees. For example, in my culture, Islam is the common religion and so prayer times and religious holidays need to be accommodated for. During the month of Ramadan, it would be inconsiderate of someone to constantly eat in front of us or make statements like, “Just take a bite. I won’t tell.” By taking these coping methods of culture differences into consideration, we can become better
Being in my Personal Development class there has been many success strategies from our On Course textbook. These strategies will be carried on in my life as a guide to my very own personal philosophy of success. After careful consideration the four most appropriate On Course success strategies that will be best of use to achieve success will be to discover self-motivation, master self-management, adopt lifelong learning, and accept personal responsibility.
