To manage a global economy, there are many considerations we need to take in. One thing we need to master is cultural sensitivity, the understanding and respect of differences between cultures. We need to be okay with people having different views and ideas than us and that it may also be hard for us to catch on to it quickly, but we need to be willing to be open minded and considerate of people of different cultures. We also need to be aware of how we react and our attitudes towards people from different cultures. If we react in a way that seems negative, we will end up hurting our chances of forming a relationship with that person which is the whole point of coping with these differences. We also need to convey what we feel to people of different cultures because if we feel uncomfortable with someone relying on us too much, we need to make sure they know so they can understand where we are coming from. …show more content…
As someone who lives in America, but grew up submerged in Bengali culture, I, and everyone else experiencing the differences in culture, need to also be willing to open up to trying new things and accommodating as well.
I cannot expect others to only adapt for me, but I need to also try to adapt for others and meet them in the middle. Employers also need to consider cultural requirements of their employees. For example, in my culture, Islam is the common religion and so prayer times and religious holidays need to be accommodated for. During the month of Ramadan, it would be inconsiderate of someone to constantly eat in front of us or make statements like, “Just take a bite. I won’t tell.” By taking these coping methods of culture differences into consideration, we can become better
leaders. As future leaders in the global economy, it is important for us to effectively cope with cultural differences. There are many ways one can deal with these differences in cultures and it is essential for leaders to do so to form interpersonal relationships. One reason why it is important is because we are living in a world of increasing economic interdependence. Because of this, people from all over the world depend on each other, even if they are all the way across the earth, for many goods and products. In this day and age, there is nothing that we can do alone without relying on others to provide certain materials or things for us. Another reason why it is important to deal with cultural differences is the world is far too connected for us to ignore the existence of other people. This goes back to economic interdependence and how even if we tried to ignore cultural differences, we ultimately would not be able to because of how often we need to interact with others. As I mentioned before, we need to master cultural sensitivity which is important, especially in the workplace, to understand the background, experiences, and values of both our employees and customers. By understanding the social behavior and norms of other cultures, we can experience the world in a different light, interacting and making personal connections with those we could not have done so with before. In conclusion, one’s national culture plays a big role in his or her life and the relationships he or she is trying to create. As individuals, understanding our differences and how we and others can accommodate and adjust will make forming relationships easier. While it may not seem simple at the start, it is okay to feel so as long as we are willing to put in the effort to understand one another. As rising leaders in the world, it is imperative that we are able to cope and manage people who are from different cultures. By doing so, we can create an environment not only for ourselves, but also for our employees that will increase and promote cultural differences which will ultimately help a company add to its bottom line.
Assimilation is a force that is unstoppable. Americans do it on a daily basis without the time to contemplate whether to assimilate or not. Assimilation also keeps our world turning; it is the basis of agreement and understanding. As we assimilate we understand that through conforming this will create a strong unit. When working with a company, conformation is needed. To move as a unit, and to be displayed as a unit is any company's desire. Why would any prestigious company want to be displayed as disorganized? Or have employees that cannot work or agree with one another? It is a characteristic that is needed in every person, the ability to work as a unit, and become a team player. Through assimilation, teamwork is established and is learned. Teamwork is the basis of any company, and through teamwork the company will thrive as one unit.
The United States has for over two centuries been involved in the growing world economy. While the U.S. post revolutionary war sought to protect itself from outside influences has since the great depression and world war two looked to break trade restrictions. The United States role in the global economy has grown throughout the 20th century and as a result of several historical events has adopted positions of both benefactor and dependent. The United States trade policy has over time shifted from isolationist protectionism to a commitment to establishing world-wide free trade. Free trade enterprise has developed and grown through organizations such as the WTO and NAFTA. The U.S. in order to obtain its free trade desires has implemented a number of policies that can be examined for both their benefits and flaws. Several trade policies exist as options to the United States, among these fair trade and free trade policies dominate the world economic market. In order to achieve economic growth the United States has a duty to maintain a global trade policy that benefits both domestic workers and industry. While free trade gives opportunities to large industries and wealthy corporate investors the American worker suffers job instability and lower wages. However fair trade policies that protect America’s workers do not help foster wide economic growth. The United States must then engage in economic trade policies that both protect the United States founding principles and secure for tomorrow greater economic stability.
The article I chose to review describes how to adapt you behavior across different cultures. Molinsky mentions that the choice of working globally was more of personal interest rather than an academic decision. The interview describes that adapting to a new culture is not only difficult cognitively but more difficult psychologically and behaviorally. Andy Molinsky mentions he was quick to realize that most academic literature fixates on differences and knowing things at an abstract level does not help you adapt culturally. Molinsky describes
Globalisation is the process by which the world is becoming increasingly interconnected as a result of massively increased trade and cultural exchange. Globalisation brings many benefits such as freer movement of capital, goods, and services; bigger companies are now able to operate in more than one country and because of that there are more jobs in less economically developed countries (LEDC’s). Of course there are a few disadvantages such as an intense competition and widening gap between rich and poor countries.
Cross-cultural aspect is considered as a vital issue in this global economy and people from various cultural backgrounds are working together and bringing different values, viewpoints and business practices. This seminar on “leading in a cross-cultural context” was an eye-opener for me, as the Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI) assessment questions were relative to knowing your own cultural values and how you bring forward your attitude and behavior when you are introduced to a new culture and people. It reflects your ability to be open and understand people with cultural differences.
Globalization has many implications for leadership today and in the future. Global perspectives are being spread to the farthest points in the world and to the most isolated people. People of different cultures come to the United States daily to live, travel, or engage in business. Leaders must respond to this challenge of globalization so they can effectively reach out to as many people as possible. Opening themselves to the world's changes allows leaders to compare and contrast their culture with the arts, language, beliefs, customs, philosophies, and ways of living of other people. By observing and questioning another culture, leaders can understand the origin of an individual's viewpoints and become more sensitive to the cultural needs of that individual. By continually exposing themselves to other cultures, young leaders can thoroughly develop this global perspective and devote themselves to making connections with the entire world.
Globalisation allows individuals, groups, corporations, and countries to reach around the world farther, faster, more deeply, and more cheaply than ever before. Most large local companies regard globalisation as opportunity, thereby exploring overseas markets for maximum market share and optimum business strategies. However, managers would face a series of challenges caused by leadership models, cultural backgrounds, political and economic risks, HR management, etc. To study multinational management skills is very useful for my future career. In this essay, I will set goals for this subject, identify the skills I have honed and need to improve, and explain my strategies for achieving goals.
International interchange of world views, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture generate further interdependence of economic and cultural activities. “Globalization is making people less ethnocentric” (Machida). By globalizing certain parts of cultures people are becoming more accustomed to being exposed to other cultures. Being ethnocentric is a major problem in the first because it allows people to other cultures negatively. If globalizing cultures and making people more aware of why they do certain things could bring understanding for many
According to Caligiuri and Dragoni (n.d., p.227), a successful global manager has the competency of self-managing in a sense that he has a higher tolerance of ambiguity and believes highly in his ability to accomplish a task. And when integrated with a cultural curiosity competency, it is likely to formulate a global leader who is readily to learn
In the workplace, it is common to encounter individuals of different cultures, ethnicities, and genders. This diversity can either lead to an introduction of new work methods, or it can lead to conflict between coworkers. In order to avoid conflict, and have all employees work as a cohesive team, managers must educate themselves, and their employees on the topic of cultural diversity. In order for your practices to be considered effective, you must not only respect and recognize an employee’s diversity, you must use their difference to benefit them.
Sonderberg, A-M & N Holden. (2002), Rethinking cross cultural management in a globalizing business world' International Journal of Cross Culture Management 2(1): 103-121
Within an organization, there are always people that think and behave differently, all dependent on their personal values and cultures. Efficient managing of the human resources is an art, and it is hard to find a perfect solution/combination. It is important that management recognize and understand that people work differently. This is why it is important to have strong cultural foundations that also guides how employees are expected to behave and work. Thereby it should be easier for management to utilize the work force diversity to something meaningful.
Edward T. Hall thoroughly examines the many situations and their influences that we face every day in our lives in “The Silent Language”. He clearly explains how these influences have strong impact on our development, our relationships in todays’ global economy. Hall mentions how the American business people were inexperienced and unfamiliar with the rest of people of other countries. The author strongly feels that one should cross the cultural gap between two participating countries in order to achieve the success in a global economy. The author tries to describe five aspects that are responsible for disastrous results that lead to any country to fail in international business if a firm is not aware about it. They are:
The majority of the global economy workforce today is very diverse that include people from multiple nationalities and different backgrounds. In order for businesses to stay competitive in the market, they need to adapt to those changes so their company can continue to grow, prosper and attain success.
With the rapid growth in globalization there are a number of firms who have taken their businesses abroad. Their challenge, cross cultural management and communication. An effective communication strategy begins first with understanding who the sender of the message is and who the receiver of the message is. Many companies have realized this and offer training in the different cultures to help better facilitate communication between leaders (Cross-Cultural Communication, mindtools.com). Without this basic understand between sender and receiver it can be very difficult for companies of multicultural to even begin to communicate. The second important understanding is that leaders must demand a cultural tolerance of acceptable behavior between cultures to facilitate effective communication (Cross-Cultural Communication, mindtools.com).
