Nowadays, I believe that education becomes one of the most important things people all around the world should get in their life. They can get an education wherever and whenever they are. Commonly, people start to study and get an education by their family and school start from kindergarten until university level. However, what is the meaning of education? It is “a systematic process through which a child or an adult acquires knowledge, experience, skill and sound attitude” (John Parankimalil, 2012). Factually, in Indonesia, the student just started a new curriculum named “2013 Curriculum”. Its curriculum has 2 terms for 5 months in each term. Besides the purpose of this curriculum is to teach how to use technologies, the student also studying some lessons. They learnt Math, Science, Social, and Language in the school. Especially for high school student, its curriculum can help them ready to face the university level after the graduated from high school, because they just learn some specific subjects related to the university in high school. On the other hand, it has so many disadvantages. For instance, they can’t think creatively and developing student art talent in the school. Again, they can’t learn about culture because they aren’t learning social culture. However, Japanese student has a different curriculum with Indonesian student. The Japanese curriculum has 3 terms for each year. In addition, it allowed the student to attend the school for 8 months per year. The subject of what Japanese student studied are Language, Science, Social, Art, Culture, Math, and Music. Unlike Indonesia curriculum, Japanese curriculum can make their student think creatively and developing their talent in art or culture. Teacher in Indonesia teach the student by giving notes in the white board and doing communication actively with the student. Moreover, the students always get presentation and research assignment by the teacher approximately twice a week. The purpose of that method is because the Ministry of Education in Indonesia wants all Indonesian students active both in class and outside class. In addition, the student also can develop their public speaking ability and learn how to persuade or promoting something to people automatically by doing a presentation. However, it’s very different with Japanese teaching style. Japanese Ministry of Education wants to make the student doing self-studying outside the class. As a result, the teacher just giving the definition and the use of something that learned by the student. If the student has some questions, they must search that by themselves. First, many Japanese students are surprised by American schools because American students pay much attention to teachers, and also they interrupt teachers to ask questions or to express their opinions. The style of teaching in the U.S. is completely different from Japan, especially in two points. One difference is that teachers in Japan expect students to be quiet in classes. Lesson study refers to a Japanese program of developing teachers’ profession during their teaching experience. It is a translation from Japanese word Jugyokenkyo which literally means study or research (Fernandez & Yshida, 2012). Fernandez and Yushida (2012) define it as “lessons that are object of ones’ study”. It means that through lesson study, the teachers explore their teaching-based research goals through the several steps which they have defined them earlier. These steps include: collaborative planning, observation, discussion, revising, re-teaching, and sharing reflection. Also, Dudley (2014) defines lesson study as a procedure in which teams of teachers do planning, teaching, observing, and analyzing learning and teaching collaboratively.
