The Cellphone Dilemma

Why do schools crack down on cell phone usage in schools? Many pressing issues make the cell phone policy a fiercely debated topic among school boards. Cell phones should not be allowed while school is in session since they can be used for cheating, the school is liable for them, and they interfere with the educational environment.
First of all the cell phone will threaten the integrity of the student body. Cheating can be done with ease with the cell phone’s capabilities today. The cell phone can be a tool used for cheating and can be used for taking and distributing photographs. (Randi Weingarten) Pictures can be taken of homework and sent over the network to another or even several others. Pictures can also be put on the internet where millions can access it. Students may also use the phone’s texting capabilities for cheating by communicating with another while in school. Most cell phones also have internet capabilities where they can access thousands of resources for information. While this may be helpful in the school setting, it will offer an unfair advantage when exploited while testing and would defeat the purpose of examinations.
Secondly, the presence of cell phones in the school setting will cause a myriad of liability issues for the school. The school is responsible for anything that occurs on the school premises and will no doubt be held liable if anything happens to a cell phone. Cell phones have advance in technology over the years and can still cost a hefty sum of money. If a cell phone was broken on school property, the school can be held liable under the circumstances.
