Lecture Note: The case study method and your unique process of analysis I like there is no right or wrong answer when comes to the case analysis. This does not mean that I am allowed to write whatever and done. It just simply indicates that the result of case is not so important than the experience of analyzing the case and discovers the most unique methodology that is effectively working for oneself. Change the existing mindset with proportional information like the training soldier to be ready for the real war battle in the managerial level. Critical thinking plays a bit part in the case analysis, students need to able to come out a working solution to the case study and successfully explain the solution, and able to defense and stand his/her ground for the chosen case position. I have been as IT personnel for many years and I am very familiar with how to resolve problems of the computer system and peripherals, and create alternative solution or backup plan for some extreme situations. I think I have jumped out of the comfort zone couple times from work in the past. I worked at a small business company. After system upgrade and implement new network switch and wireless access points, I had been asked to assist purchasing department because there were not much of IT work every day in the small size company. I accepted the challenge even this was not something I knew or been trained for. I started to learn and soon understood the term purchasing such of “FOB’, “Net Pay”, and how to be a buyer. This may be the benefit of being an extrovert person and the perception skill with marginal toward to sense. I was able to learn different things and made judgment of selecting right supplier base on factors and situation in comparison of a good amount of potential
Organize information first – A huge takeaway from the case studies and the Foster Competition was the idea of organizing the information before doing anything else. Similar to outlining an essay, the frameworks were essential to breaking down the material in the case and obtain a better grasp of the situation. In my opinion the SWOT analysis and the root cause analysis were the most beneficial. The SWOT analysis gave me a great understanding of the current position of the company, while the root cause analysis expose their core issue. Going forward both will be a great tool when making strategic decision in my career.

But it is apparent that their business models are different in many aspects through a critical analysis. The eight-step module is a framework tool used to help analyze and assist you in thinking through an ethical dilemma. After Koch Industries acquired Georgia-Pacific, they immediately took steps to transfer its unique and highly ethical culture to their new “family member.” Tom Butz along with a few other Koch employees and Georgia-Pacific employees were in charge of getting the transition started immediately. Butz says “The key, was the commitment from leadership across the company to our vision for compliance and to building the desired culture.”(Travion & Nelson, 2011, p.247) There were some breakdowns in communication at the beginning that may have possibly led to the firing of some employees but I do not believe this can completely be the blame. They have to take responsibility for their own actions, when you deliberately go against something you have to be prepared for the consequences. Letting the employees go will benefit the company and other employees in the long run. I will begin my analysis by gathering facts and defining the ethical issues. Once the ethical issues are defined I will identify who these issues affect and think about the potential consequences. Then I will identify the obligations and reason for each one depending on the people involved. I will then ask myself what a person of integrity would do in this specific situation. And before making any decisions I will think creatively about any potential actions and check my gut feelings about the situation.
Since the time when computers began to become an everyday item, we have seen a leader emerge. Microsoft Corporation has over the ages proved through technological advances and new innovations that it is a leader among computers and new upcoming technologies. Microsoft offers a variety of products some of which include operating systems for laptops and desktops, cell phones and gaming consoles. They also offer services that help us with everyday questions and tasks such as Microsoft Office, which most people use in their daily life to write reports, make presentations and keep track of accounts. They have a search engine called Bing, which is a rival to Google and an instant messaging device, Windows Live. Microsoft with its vast categories of services and products has a market value of 215.44 billion dollars falling behind Apple inc. who has a staggering 306.23 billion dollars which leads the market. Market capitalization is the total dollar market value of all of a company's outstanding shares. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying a company's shares outstanding by the current market price of one share. The investment community uses this figure to determining a company's size, as opposed to sales or total asset figures. The annual revenue for Microsoft in 2010 reached a record of $62.5 billion, an increase of 7 percent compared with the previous fiscal year. The number of employees employed at Microsoft as of 2010 was 89,000. Google who is a well know competitor has 24,400 employees and Apple who employs 49,400 employees.
Spokane Industries has contracted Franklin Electronics for an 18 month product development contract. Franklin Electronics is new to using project management methodologies and has not been exposed to earned value management methodologies. Even though Franklin and Spokane have worked together in the past, they have mainly used fixed-price contracts with little to no stipulations. For this project, Spokane Industries is requiring Franklin Electronics to use formalized project management methodologies, earned value cost schedules, and schedules for reports and meetings. Since Franklin Electronics had no experience with earned value management, the cost accounting group was trained in the methodology in order to bid for the project.
Kylie, I do agree that case studies are time consuming and take the majority of classroom time. I find the flipped classroom method to be very beneficial but for the middle school and high school setting. Teacher involvement still needs to be high for the case study method to be successful but it still creates promotion of independent learning. I do see that the case study method would not be very beneficial if the students did not feel interested in the subject. It would be similar to our class doing one on a knee replacement surgery rather than pulmonary fibrosis. We would probably be more enthusiastic to do pulmonary fibrosis than a knee replacement surgery. It would be interesting to see a study based on these two types of methods to

What is a case study? A case study is a process or record of research in which detailed consideration is given to the development of a particular person, group, or situation over a period of time. There is many different types of cases; rape, robbery, arson, kidnapping and finally murder. Case studies lead to trials;a formal examination of evidence before a judge, and typically before a jury, in order to decide guilt in a case of criminal or civil proceedings. One famous case study that went to trial was Jodi Arias Trial. Her case was her getting convicted of brutally murdering her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander.
Effective communication in an organization is one of the components of its success. Managers are charged with navigating communication obstacles while making every effort to harness its benefits. This onus placed on managers is compounded by organizational advancements and the application of new technologies. One relatively new organizational technology being applied is the use of social media. Social media creates communication issues yet conversely alleviates specific communication barriers by playing several roles within organizations today.
Being a leader means you guide others to achieve a goal and complete tasks. A leader will use communication strategies to convey what is expected from employees such as priorities or timelines. The communication strategies that will be discussed are motivation of employees, listening, showing confidence and having work knowledge. I will focus on a virtual office setting since I work remotely. Also a case study analysis will discuss what one leader can do differently to effectively lead his staff.
Critical thinking is a significant and essential topic in recent education. The strategy of critical thinking skills helps identify areas in one's courses as the suitable place to highlight, expand and use some problems in exams that test students' critical thinking skills.
In general, I consider my greatest strength in the case study tutorials to be a confidence and willingness to contribute, which is certainly something I have struggled with in the past (during A levels, etc.). Having gained experience in group work and in leading a group project in my foundation year at Keele, I now find it far easier to speak up in these situations. I consider myself to generally be a very quiet person, so it has taken a lot of development to get to the point where I am able to speak out loudly and clearly. I am pleased with what I have achieved in this regard.
Case studies are a collection of data obtained using various methods gathered on an individual or group to record areas of interest in order to assist with analysis and provide recommendations. The study should include the name of the person, although this should be protected to provide anonymity where appropriate, and a brief description of the subject. The setting where the study is to be performed should be included. The aim of the observation must be presented along with a report of the findings. The type of method used will depend upon the subject and the area of interest. Data is gathered on the subject in this case observations were used to provide the data. An interpretation of the study will be made in order to provide a conclusion and recommendations made if applicable. Freud famously used the case studies that he carried out on his patients to develop his Psychoanalytic Theory.
