In general, I consider my greatest strength in the case study tutorials to be a confidence and willingness to contribute, which is certainly something I have struggled with in the past (during A levels, etc.). Having gained experience in group work and in leading a group project in my foundation year at Keele, I now find it far easier to speak up in these situations. I consider myself to generally be a very quiet person, so it has taken a lot of development to get to the point where I am able to speak out loudly and clearly. I am pleased with what I have achieved in this regard. Thus far, I have found the role of chair most challenging. I feel this position requires a far more thorough knowledge of all the answers to the learning objectives, …show more content…
As I myself have put forward learning objective suggestions that have given rise to such issues, it would perhaps be more prudent of me to consider what learning objectives we may need for the case study prior to the first tutorial group discussing it, in order to have more time to process and refine the objectives I might …show more content…
I found it difficult to find information in books that was directly applicable to the learning objectives, as it is not possible to refine a search for these in the same way a search can be refined for very specific, relevant phrases when using references online. I have therefore found it somewhat difficult to identify important and relevant information in these sources. In the case of highly specialised books (for example, Holt et al’s Textbook of Diabetes, used for the first case study) the information was often given in far greater detail than required for the level of the case study, while other more generalised biochemistry textbooks gave some explanation, but did not always go into the mechanisms that we wished to understand. It has also become evident that I need to think more outside the box when it comes to finding books to reference – one area I found particularly challenging to find information on in textbooks was the mechanism behind blood glucose testing. Another student had, however, found a good source for this in a book specific to blood tests, which was not something I had thought to look

This book covers the discovery of anesthesia. I used it mostly for contributions that led to the discovery. It was useful.

The ethical discernment model described by Slosar (2004) and developed for use at Ascension Health will assist us as we analyze this case. It reminds us that discernment engages our spirituality, intellect, imagination, intuition, and beliefs. It is decision-making that reaches into the heart of our beliefs about God, creation, others, and ourselves. It therefore requires structured time for reflection and prayer from the beginning and throughout the process.
For my third source I used information from a book rather than a journal or a book review so I could get different information on the topic.
They have been some challenges in trying to figure out the right approach to follow in a research study, and this semester is more of an eye opener that reveals the expected ways in conducting research which has been a very interesting and tough process. Dudley (2011), least four major search strategies available for locating references related to the chosen topic issues these include: (1) consultation, (2) searches in subject indexes, (3) browsing, and (4) footnote chasing. Researcher needs to be aware of all of these strategies in information gathering.
In Ap biology, we were handed a Campbell Textbook before the class began in order to complete the pre-modules. I consider the textbook to be the most beneficial resource that we had during this course, due to the amount of detail, examples, and images that it contained explaining each concepts in a reliable way. The power points that were made to summarize the main points from the textbook were helpful, however they were really long and made me miss what was actually important and take additional notes on filler information. Due to the long powerpoints, I felt implied to take long and details notes, which people struggled in this class, either taking too much or too less. After two units passed, we were taught how our notes should be, which will later help us in college. This strategy allowed me to understand the important information and identify the filler information, resulting in
I used a variety of books to assist me in my coursework. I used the
Preserving his imperviable spirit, the textbook’s success only made Joslin work harder to succeed. He worked endless hours “alerting other investigators, public health officials and general practitioners to the ‘silent epidemic’ of diabetes. His data, referred to as his “black books” by those he worked with, served as an epidemiological record of his countless patients (Joslin Diabetes Center). He went on to publish a supplementary book, Diabetes Novel for the Doctor and Patient, that was released in 1918. Like most of his accomplishments, it pioneered diabetes treatment as we know it today. The book further helped educate patients about their condition and, like many of his accomplishments, started the workings of what would be known currently as the self-help movement.
According to Paul (1999), reflective practice has become a dominant paradigm in second language teacher education in recent years. Further, Biggs (2003) cited that learning new technique for teacing is like the fish that provides a meal for today which same as reflective practice that acts as the net that provides the meal for the rest of one’s life. To begin with, reflective practice has been a major movement since the eighties in teacher education (Calderhead, 1989; Cruickshank &Applegate, 1981; Gore, 1987; Zeichner, 1987). Even more, research acknowledges a number of potential benefits that arise from reflecting on ones’ teaching both for pre-service and in-service teachers (Bailey, 1997; Cruickshank, 1987; Mckay, 2002; Oterman and Kottamp,
There are many areas for potential failure in the learner-centered classroom. Doyle states that student resistance is the biggest obstacle to overcome. The student often doesn’t understand the concept and is not receptive to it. The greatest way to deal with this potential failure is to explain the ‘why’ to the students. Students that understand why they are to do a task and understand how to apply it are more likely to overcome it.
Kylie, I do agree that case studies are time consuming and take the majority of classroom time. I find the flipped classroom method to be very beneficial but for the middle school and high school setting. Teacher involvement still needs to be high for the case study method to be successful but it still creates promotion of independent learning. I do see that the case study method would not be very beneficial if the students did not feel interested in the subject. It would be similar to our class doing one on a knee replacement surgery rather than pulmonary fibrosis. We would probably be more enthusiastic to do pulmonary fibrosis than a knee replacement surgery. It would be interesting to see a study based on these two types of methods to
Addressing learning objectives at the beginning of the lesson, referencing learning targets that they have crafted/partially authored, putting into context what they want to learn, further elaborating how what they want to learn relates to the unit learning targets, and reusing the learning target language throughout the lessons helps students to understand how/why the learning targets apply to key concepts and learning activities throughout the lesson. While students will continue to master these learning targets throughout the lessons, they were able to apply their understanding to each learning target when they:
...rks. In a word, the MA experience was considered to be a bridge that combines the student learning with working skills, it would be of great help for my future career.
