“Is the glass half full or half empty”, a famous idiom, used to determine whether someone is an optimist or a pessimist. Even though seeing the glass half-full or having great expectations in life is a good thing, there is one fact we cannot deny; the fact that the glass is also half empty. To be able to deal with life with as few disappointments as possible, one needs to be an optimistic person, who has a healthy proportion of expectations and “what if” attitude so that one can be flexible when fails. We are all bound to experience failure many times in life. Failure can be devastating, but not a long-term hindrance to having a successful, flourishing life. Being that, there are many advantages of being optimistic and the major advantage is health. According to the study of Seligman, 99 Harvard University Students, who were optimistic at the age of 25 were significantly heathier at the age of 45 to 60 than those who were pessimist. The second advantage is the persistence of your life. Considering that optimists so not give up easily on tough situations like pessimist do; optimists tend to turn failure into opportunity to achieve their goals. The last advantage is less stress; stress can affects one’s daily lifestyle, health, disposition, and efficiency. For that reason, optimists are more proactive with stress management and work harder to reduce stress.
