A team leader has a variety of traits and characteristics that encourages the team members to follow him or her. Team leaders naturally possess certain qualities and skills such as consideration and integrity which encourages trust and respect among the team members. They enjoy taking up a challenge and embracing change as they know it will benefit them in the long term while followers have to be forced to drive out a project by their boss. They rarely, if ever, volunteer to take on a project by themselves. Leaders are hands-on, and are not content with simply waiting for the next step to be done. They despise indecisiveness and are driven crazy if the progress is far behind. Throughout this class, we learned that leadership can be defined in many ways by different authors. The definitions depend on many things and different variables. One way of we can attempt to define is through characteristics of the leader, the followers, and the situation (Yukl, 2013). Yukl, 2013 defines leadership as being “the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives” (Yukl, 2013 p.7). What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. When team three was given the semester project, there was not much in the way of forming team goals, we just stepped up to the cliff and jumped. As a team we took on each assignment when it was given, there was not much thinking about the big picture; instead, we just did the assignments as they came along. This hindered us in the fact that some of the sections in our project may not have been as deeply researched as they should have been. We also did not set very strong individual goals for the semester either, our code of cooperation seemed to be taken as a joke and no one was ever held responsible for the rules laid down at the beginning of the semester. The rules of being on time and contributing during meets were never enforced.

Clark (2013) states that “you must be the role model you want others to grow into” (para. 9). A strong leader leads by example, is ethical, and earns the trust and respect of their followers. They are also conscientious of the impact they have on the world around them. They practice impeccable communication and learn to inspire others with a positive vision for the future. Clark (2014) describes leadership as the methods of influencing others to accomplish objectives in a collective manner in the direction of the organization's vision.
The concept of leadership arises out of the need for cooperative action by human beings to achieve certain goals. In order to be a good leader, one must have self-confidence, communication skills, charisma and integrity. These are the fundamental skills that make a good leader. Self-confidence is the attitude that one possesses in which one is not afraid to make decisions based on their ideas. Communication skills allow a leader to convey his or her ideas or thoughts carefully. Charisma is what makes a leader appealing to the public, and integrity is what allows the public to trust and have faith in the leader. Without these skills, a leader would just be mediocre, and not great.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic.
