Established nearly a century ago, teacher tenure “protects students’ education and those who provide it [and] guarantees that teachers must be given the reason, documentation, and a hearing before being fired” (Kahlenberg, 2015). It is an asset that every teacher strives to achieve because it primarily provides them the support system that otherwise would be neglected without it. Even though a tenure is beneficial for every teacher to gain, there is still individuals that continually criticize it and wish to terminate. These individuals neglect to see the impact a tenure can have on both students and teachers within their school systems; instead, they believe it only increases “failing” teachers to continue teaching when they do more harm than benefit. A secure and stable job “attracts many teachers to the teaching profession, and eliminating teacher tenure would hamper teacher recruitment” (“Teacher Tenure - ProCon.org,” 2017). The greater the number of teachers, the more teachers there will be for students decreasing overcrowding in classrooms. It also aids in decreasing unemployment because it will prompt individuals to teach since there is the security of keeping their jobs. Additionally, it “encourages the careful selection of qualified and effective teachers” (“Teacher Tenure - ProCon.org,” 2017). School administrators and higher-ups in the school system look carefully in identifying the best teachers that encourage learning and bring back promising test results to keep to have every child succeed. They want to choose the best out of the best, so their school can continue promoting quality and secure education for students to prosper and exceed in future schooling. Although a teacher tenure is beneficial for the community, it also proves to be very useful for students
Tenure is a type of job security that professors earn once they reach an exact level of expertise. Once a college professor has earned tenure, they need to be able to follow the teaching contract as long as they abide by the rules set forth in their contracts. It's believed that students are able to gain help from the expertise and skill of an untenured teacher. A number of the protections are extended to an irremovable teacher so that they can't be discriminated against their personal views, temperament conflicts, or any space that's not instructional. The statutes for academic tenure in higher education and dismissal vary from state to state, however altogether all are smart in standing and should be offered employment. This therefore will make sure professors won’t be fired for unnecessary issues. Tenure won't shield professors, but will help with those whom are ineffective or incapable.
From the reading “Ethical and Legal Issues in U.S. Education”, there were three points that that surprised me. One point was that it is so surprising to me that there are so many steps that a teacher, on tenure, must go through before they get fired. It makes it so difficult to be fired and such a long process that they will never be fired unless they commit a major crime and I believe that this should change. As a teacher, we need to be at the top of our game at all times, and teachers with tenure seem like they do not always have to in order to keep their job. As mentioned the authors did argue some strong logical points. One of their strongest points just might be when they mentioned how tenure should be replaced with multiyear contracts. “Professors who possess it have no reason to improve their teaching, take on introductory courses, or, in fact, accept any tasks, not to their liking.” (Hacker and Dreifus 181). Some might argue better yet some will argue that “if he/she has been teaching a long time then they deserve to be granted tenure”, but wouldn’t it be better for our future and our children’s future if those who continues to teach well

To correct this, Hacker and Dreifus advocate for tenures to be replaced with multiyear contracts to ensure professors work hard for their own benefit and for the benefit of the students’. Keep the teachers in the classrooms inspiring young minds rather than taking unnecessary paid vacations, assert Hacker and Dreifus, who believe sabbaticals should be limited. Hacker and Dreifus also agree that adjunct teachers, professors who teach at a college but do not receive the same benefits as their peers who are, in fact, faculty members, should receive similar benefits. Davis Guggenheim, director of the controversial documentary Waiting for “Superman”, brings to light the flaws of the American education system, and more eagerly the practice of tenure. Guggenheim’s purpose is to inform of these flaws and instigate a reform. He creates a pitiful tone in order to denounce tenure and spread this opinion to the viewers of his documentary. These rhetorical appeals work to create a compelling argument on the issue of tenure.
The question to be answered in this paper is rather faculty tenure should be eliminated within higher education. The debate with faculty tenure goes back some 70 plus years. For decades now some teachers are able to hide in the shadows of the classroom, being paid while underperforming. These bad teachers are able to sit in the academic system, riding it out, harming the students they encounter with. These teachers take advantage of our tenure system in America today. Tenure has many parts to it that help the teachers for the better, but what really matters is how it affects the students being taught. To prevent from any other students being harmed, tenure in it’s entirety should be abolished.
I want to teach because I want to help my students create the foundation of their lives in mathematics and as individuals. As a future teacher of mathematics, I fear that students are becoming more and more hostile towards math. It bothers me because math is very important to learn conceptually and is a skill that will teach you multiple life skills. Mathematics is a life lesson when taught correctly. It teaches students good work ethic, integrity, humility, and discipline. These are all qualities that will help my students grow as individuals and as learners throughout their entire lives. Being a teacher is a noble cause, though it also seems to be the dream of idiots and morons. It is a job where you work constantly and are always told what to teach. You are expected to teach to a standardized test. It is a job path that only the bravest take. The people who claim that those who can’t do teach, know nothing about teaching or how hard it is to teach. Especially high school students who have no desire to learn. Children in their last required chapter in their education. Their young pubescent minds focused more on the opposite sex over their grades. How do you teach such a difficult age group? How do you keep them engaged? Especially with a subject that so many find boring and tedious, English and English literature.
Many people on this earth grow up saying they would like to make a difference in this world. However, half of those people do not feel like putting in the work in order to do so. As an elementary education major, making a difference is one of the main goals. There are many benefits of becoming a teacher, and students benefit as well. In order to have many students successfully graduate from one grade to the next a teacher should be willing to put in as much work that is needed. Elementary school is where children are set up for the rest of their education. It is important to understand how to go into this career field, becoming a teacher has its own benefits, and the children are able to benefit from teachers.
Imagine a family, a family that has it all. Good neighborhood, schooling, and robust health. Everything seems to be going right for this family, then all of a sudden one event changes the course of their future forever. The father makes a poor business investment which causes the family to loose their savings. Now that all of the savings are gone and they are living off check to check, they need to cut back on wasteful spending. The kids may need to attend a lower public school than the normal private school they once attended, thus causing them not to learn or advance at a level that they once could. Within the span of what could be not more than a year or two, this family has went from having a stable life to a family that is on the verge
In my five years of teaching at Falling Creek Middle School I have seen and meet many substitute teachers. Some substitutes are in the building for a day while, another has served as a long term teacher. Furthermore, this service is provided for teachers, instructional assistants, bus drivers and cafeteria workers who have to miss a day from work for a number of reasons. But, at what cost to the school district? With this in mind, I have always wondered how many days teachers are absent on the average from school, what day are missed the most, what is the cost to the district for substitute teachers, what is the pay rate for substitute, the impact on student when teachers are absent and do substitute receive any benefits.
