In my five years of teaching at Falling Creek Middle School I have seen and meet many substitute teachers. Some substitutes are in the building for a day while, another has served as a long term teacher. Furthermore, this service is provided for teachers, instructional assistants, bus drivers and cafeteria workers who have to miss a day from work for a number of reasons. But, at what cost to the school district? With this in mind, I have always wondered how many days teachers are absent on the average from school, what day are missed the most, what is the cost to the district for substitute teachers, what is the pay rate for substitute, the impact on student when teachers are absent and do substitute receive any benefits.

Which is a great difference from 2009-2010. After reviewing the previous amount of money being spent on substitute teacher it ‘disturbing. The districts need to create a committee and put a plan in place to deal with the amount of absence a staff is allowed to have per school year. This money could and should be used to repair building and employee more qualified teacher, instead of keeping the teacher who abuse the substitute service.
In spite of the money being spent for subs, their pay rates are different is each locality. Richmond substitute’s teachers with a degree make about $ 10.29 an hour and long term subs with a degree make about $17.86 an hour ( Richmond Public School Human Resource, 2014). In Chesterfield the sub makes $ 78.00 a day and after 20 days consecutive days in the same position the pay rate is $197.00 a day (Chesterfield County Public School, 2014-2015).
