Tattoos and body piercings should not cause problems in the workplace. How many tattoos and piercings a person has does not reflect a person’s work ethic. Body piercings and tattoos are a high topic of body discrimination and very many people are looked down upon for the tattoos or piercings they have chosen. Your gender and workplace are also key roles in tattoo and body piercing discrimination. What I am trying to get across is that no matter a person’s gender or the tattoos or piercings, one should not be factored out of having a job based off of the tattoo a person has. Tattoo and body piercing discrimination generally coincides with a person’s gender. Many people have went to court to sue industries for their discrimination, but were rejected. There should be laws against it because it is a type of discrimination against a person. There have been many claims sent to the house and senate about tattoo and piercing discrimination but have always been turned down. If there were laws against tattoo and body piercing discrimination, there would be less people living off unemployment checks. People with tattoos and facial piercings that cannot be taken out often end up not having jobs due to the fact that they have visible tattoos that cannot be hidden or covered such as, face, hand, and neck tattoos (U.S Navy Force). By living off of unemployment, people can barely provide for themselves, let alone for a family, and one’s with tattoos and other body modifications should not be opted out of that opportunity. Overall, if there were any laws against tattoo and body piercing/modification discrimination, less people would be in debt. The next time a bill is sent to the house and the senate, it should at least be looked at instead of being rejected right

It is a form of self-expression and art, and a way for young people to find their independence (42). Men and women have different norms at to what tattoos they get. Men tend to get more masculine tattoos, while women tend to get more feminine ones (44). Even though it is seen as normal to get a tattoo today, most employers still have a problem with them. Most employers want their employees who are tattooed to cover them up so they are not visible on the job (46). Others view people with tattoos to be stupid and trouble makers (46). Tattoos as a social norm, proves that in some cases they are acceptable and in other cases, they still cause problems like stereotyping.
Body art and clothing choices are big components of fashion. David Kirby, author of "Inked Well" writes about how he once hated tattoos and thought they made people look unsophisticated, if you will. He met with many people who had gotten tattoos in the past and one specific person he met changed his whole reasoning as to why he thought tattoos were unnecessary. Her name was Jodie, and of all the subjects Kirby interviewed, Jodie was the most kind-hearted. Jodie, a recent self-abuser, shared with Kirby why she had spent so many long, tedious hours in the tattoo shop and her response was, "It didn't take me long to realize that getting tattooed was quite comparable to cutting myself; it was a way for me to 'bleed out' the emotional pains which I was unable to deal with otherwise.(Inked Well )" Tattooing caused Jodie to find an alternative way to release her pain. David Kirby was very much so a follower of society and by the end of his endeavor into the effects of tattooing he found he had a newfound respect for the "outsiders." Do you ever wonder why you never see tattoos and piercings in the medical or federal working fields? It’s because some people believe that a person with tattoos and/or piercings is linked to people with bad reputations, such as bikers, sailors, criminals, and gang members, but that is false. Piercings and tattoos have been popular for quite a long time now, but still get looked down upon and can even affect your daily life.
This is completely invalid. I classify inappropriate as being vulgar or containing profanity or nudity. Of course, there are tattoos that contain these elements, to which I would say should not be displayed in the workplace. But any tattoos that do not demonstrate this should not have to be covered. I’m looking forward to this topic because I believe that everyone should be treated equal and I feel as if we aren’t being treated that way. Sooner or later I plan on getting a job but I don’t want to be denied just because a company doesn’t like it or they won’t make amends to me working and covering my tattoos. In today’s world there are several occupations one may choose from once receiving an education. Whether a person wants to be a doctor, a teacher, or a business person, one should be able to use their education to gain access to that job. Getting a job is no easy task, for there are many people who are also searching for that same job. Employers will interview many people just to find the right one and often times will have many stand-out applications to evaluate. When it comes down to making a decision, something as simple as having a tattoo could ruin every hope one has of getting the job. One may ask, “why does having a tattoo ruin ones chance of getting a job?” A tattoo would ruin one’s chances at getting a job simply because it is wrongly viewed as unprofessional.
With the latest trends in today’s society, it is not unusual to see people with tattoos on a daily basis. Typically, if you visit a business you are more likely to see someone who has body art hid in the back with the least social occupation, so that the public does not see the tattoos or piercings. Many businesses have a specific dress code where employees have to have long sleeve shirts, bracelets, or other types of traditional jewelry to cover the not-so-typical body art. The strict dress codes that businesses have set up regarding body art are too drastic with the latest changes in society, and should probably be loosened up to allow people the opportunity to express themselves.

Another thing to consider is that there are hate groups out there that will dismantle and destroy a company’s image business. For example, you have rednecks who truly live with the confederate flag and by the confederate flag. This means they support slavery and hate people of other color, for a company or business this would not bode well. Another factor is also protest groups like black lives matter.
People have often been told that “Tattoos themselves have changed” (Branded). Tattoos are something that can show what you believe in; these remind people of things that have happened to them and reminded us of the people we lost. Tattoos in the work place should be allowed; they are continually growing, they show self-expression that can identify the person you are and it is your body, even though some employers are reluctant to hiring people with them.
