Daniel Clark Professor Pringle-Brown ENC0027 11 November 2016 Tattoos in the workplace “Once associated with gang members, criminals and sailors, tattoos are now mainstream. An estimated twenty percent of all adults have at least one.” (Thompson) Companies in the workplace should be more accepting of tattoos because they set people apart, they show different styles of art on someone’s body, and they are now more popular with high-customer based industries, such as Amazon. Most people in modern society have tattoos. The reason for this being that the people or person who has these tattoos is that they believe in the design or belief behind what is tattooed on their body. Many sailors in the US Navy past, present, and future will at some point …show more content…
“Due to increasingly popularity of tattoos and body piercings among Soccer Moms and white-collar workers, corporate America is becoming more accepting of body art on its employees. Many businesses will permit their employees to sport tattoos or body piercings as long as they are not offensive or do not endanger their workers. Some employee tattoos or body piercings may even enhance a company’s image.” (Roleff 52). When working at major industry companies like Amazon, tattoos do not affect your work ethic. They will not stop you from working and tattoos do not define your work ethic. As an employee of Amazon, myself I still give one-hundred and ten percent when I work. When there are new hires that come in and they see my tattoos they ask questions and it makes for great conversation starters but still does not affect mine or their work ethic. Additionally, tattoos can provide motivation for those who you work with, whether it be an inspiring quote or a symbolic image the positivity of the tattoo is …show more content…
They can be from gangs, past reminder of history, hate groups, and against certain religious groups. First off gang tattoos can be associated between bloods, crips, or even motorcycle gangs. That is there design showing who they belong to and due to that type of tattoo the workforce industry will not hire someone who has current affiliation with gangs for fear of reputation. Secondly tattoos can be a negative reminder of history. For example, Nazi tattoos or even a tattoo of a swastika can remind to those who have served in the military of the war and what they went through. This can show companies that their employees may be on edge when they see someone with a tattoo that reminds them of their life, where they have been, and what they have done. Another thing to consider is that there are hate groups out there that will dismantle and destroy a company’s image business. For example, you have rednecks who truly live with the confederate flag and by the confederate flag. This means they support slavery and hate people of other color, for a company or business this would not bode well. Another factor is also protest groups like black lives matter. Who have wreaked havoc across the nation of America and damaged many companies in the process. Police and civilians have paid the price along with major companies who were looted during some of the protest. Finally, there are tattoos for certain religious groups like ISIS or satanic groups that
Tattoos have been utilized in various ways for thousands of years, ranging from punishment, to status symbols and indications of religious beliefs. They have served as the ultimate illustration of cultural diffusion in America, and despite generally carrying a negative social stigma, perception of tattoos has continued to evolve into a more acceptable practice.
Modern humans have been around for 200,00(0) years and throughout their brief existence they have had the advantage of intelligence over every other creature in history. They have had the opportunity to travel through space, explore the depths of the ocean, and experience every landscape imaginable; however, humans as a species are shrouded in mystery. They have had different cultures and customs spread across the globe, and in many ways it is difficult to know what life is like in cultures apart from their own, for they do not share the same lifestyle or upbringing. There are some things that are universal as far as human cultures go: smiling to show joy, crying to show pain, loving those whom they are close to, and...tattoos. Whether they are loved or hated, humans have been branding themselves with tattoos for a variety of reasons for thousands of years – tattoos are becoming more popular and accepted all the time.
Do you ever wonder why you never see tattoos and piercings in the medical or federal working fields? It’s because some people believe that a person with tattoos and/or piercings is linked to people with bad reputations, such as bikers, sailors, criminals, and gang members, but that is false. Piercings and tattoos have been popular for quite a long time now, but still get looked down upon and can even affect your daily life.
Seeing how not accepting tattoos and piercings in the workplace can cause greater problems, employers need to start accommodating for individuals of all different backgrounds. Businesses need to start focusing on the important matters such as, education, work ethic, attitude, and the willingness to do their job successfully. Anything else is just an
Tattoos should be accepted more than ever in today’s society. If you are able to go to a swimming pool, go to the grocery store, or even walk inside of a school without harming anyone you should be able to get a job. Major athletes and professional actors have tattoos, if not covered in many but are they looked down as unprofessional? Most may find them as role models or people they aspire to be like. If someone famous can have a successful life covered in tattoos, so should the ‘average American’. Becoming more accepting of things like tattoos will help expand us as a country and take away the judgment towards one with tattoos. The qualities and skills that are able to be brought from an individual to a work company are endless. A tattoo should not take this away from them.
In conclusion, tattoos have been accepted throughout all different societies. In the past, tattoos were seen as deviant and frowned upon because it goes against the social norm. People did not understand the significance and the creativity behind tattooing. Tattoos are a form of creativity. They are a way to express yourself, your religion, or your inner feelings. Each type has a significant meaning or reason. There are different categories and different types. There are multiple ways to get one. If you do not want permanent ones, henna is a good alternative. Even though tattooing has been around for decades, there are still risks. Tattoos can still get infected or have allergic reactions. New technology has developed to allow an unwanted tattoo to be removed. Tattoos have come a long way in society and will continue to develop throughout today’s society.
Despite tattoos becoming more accepted and mainstream in society, studies show that individuals with visible tattoos are often hired at a lower rate than people who are not tattooed. Persons without tattoos tend to view those with tattoos to be less honest than other non-tattooed people (Dean, 2010.). Many students who surveyed that currently have tattoos revealed that they want to get another tattoo and consider the location of the tattoo will have impact their future jobs/ employment. Many are thinking ahead being aware that tattoos still serve as a faux pas in business places, still continuing to express themselves by inking themselves perhaps in a more concealing way. Individuals that have tattoos in the workplace should be judged based on their work ethic, not body art. Conduct should count more than appearance. The image brings emotion to the reader, for example; on both sides the individual has a serious face, making the viewer feel sympathy with that certain individual. Overall, we see the same person on both sides with the same problem of discrimination for individuals that have body art. Having a tattoo is not a crime is a way to
Tattoos have been around for as long as I can remember. They started out as brandings for slaves, but now it’s become more of a piece of art that people add to themselves. Tattoos have become very popular in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe, Japan, and North and South America. The growth in tattoo culture has seen an increase of new artists into the industry, many of whom have excellent arts training. With advancements in tattoos and the ongoing upgrade of the equipment used for tattooing, this has led to an improvement in the quality and distinct look of tattoos. It is understood to be a symbol of remembrance, love, or just a way for someone to express themselves. Since this new hobby for some has started increasing, so has the policies for companies to hire people with tattoos. As an adult, I chose to put a few tattoos on my body as a symbol of things that I really cherish. Other people in my family also have tattoos, that are visible and some that are hidden from the public by clothing or materials. In today's global marketplace, employers are taking more seriously the need to provide a work environment that welcomes employees from many different backgrounds. Bringing it closer to home, my brother has an entire sleeve on both of his arms and my mom has one tattoo on her chest. He works in the oil field and my mom has been working at Celebrating Home for almost 15 years and things are going well without the tattoo issue getting in the way. This semester plan to research why companies really don’t like to hire potential employees with tattoos, and how prospective employee are affected. I also want to dig deeper into the negative imp...
In today’s society a lot of tattoos are misinterpreted or judged. Mainly by those who are against them, or teenagers who use them to rebel. They are also a good way to challenge the traditional gender norms. Such as a deep and tangible commitment to alternative gender definitions, and other women use tattoos to conform mainstream forms of feminism. A classic example would be a man dressed in a doctor’s coat, and then revealed to have full sleeves and drives a Harley. Or a U.S. Marine goes to a diner and is covered from shoulders down in tattoos and gets treated like poop because individuals assume something about this Marine that is untrue by their assumptions
...llious and dangerous. One should be delighted to have the freedom to dress and decorate themselves as they wish. Having a tattoo in today’s world still may not be viewed as professional, but tattoos are definitely no longer, nor should they ever be, viewed as unprofessional.
Once considered taboo, tattoos have shed the social outcast stigma once associated with getting inked. One might even say tattoos have become trendy.
Tattoos have been around for quite some time now, and they have always been a symbol of belonging, cultural expression or for religion. These days, individuals choose to tattoo themselves because it is part of their lifestyle or personal image. While continuing to grow in popularity and becoming a lifestyle, people are facing issues with having visible tattoos in the workforce. Although it is a form of free expression, employers have a right to enforce certain rules about tattoos in their company because they have a public image to uphold. How you present yourself to the public is solely important, which is why tattoos should not be allowed to be seen in the workplace, since it may appear offensive or unconservative.
Are tattoos a kiss of death at a workplace? According to Student Research Center, nearly 4 out of every 10 Americans in their 30s have been inked. ''In April 2000 15% of Americans were tattooed (which is roughly around 40 million people) (The National Geographic).'There are different types of tattoos, from color to black and white, even glow in the dark. Number of tattoo paralos in the U.S. is 21,000'' (Tattoo Statistics 1) and more is being added every single day. People spend about $1.6 billion on tattoos once a year. Dressing appropriately for ones line of work is important in any industry. Most work environments require a dress code that creates uniformity and conforms to safety laws. However, the question of what is business appropriate attire is being revisited. In the past, tattoos had been considered extremely taboo in the work place. However, a poll from NBC News showed that nearly 1 of 5 adults had a tattoo in 2012 (McMullen).
