This term paper is an analysis of the group processes that were observed from the participant observation point of view. The task group project was designed to allow a group of randomly selected students in an online course to work together in order to research, outline, and write a research paper as a group. This paper will synthesize the observations noted and the course material to demonstrate the knowledge obtained with regard to group process.
The course was set up as an asynchronous/online format, which means the class did not have regular face-to-face meetings or even set times for meeting to complete the project. Instead, the group was put together by the instructor and the group members were provided assignment instructions with basic suggestions on how to complete the task. As Forsyth explains on pg. 267, “powerful individuals exhibit more intense and resilient goal-striving’. This was observed when group member A repeatedly took the initiative to set goals for the entire group in order to keep the group moving along in our tasks. As the text indicates this positive aspect of power allowed member A to plan more task-related activities and task item deadlines for the group. Member A was very motivated and positive in her approach to the group and it appeared to be well received by the other group members. I also took this initiative a couple of times in order to get the group moving in the beginning. The positive effect of power and action was observed in the proactive discussion posts that allowed the group to start making decisions on the research project. By posting an open discussion to the group it allowed us to make mutually agreed upon choices in the beginning

Proactive management of the decision-making process can minimize the threat of groupthink compromising the quality of decisions. Managers can place importance of having a wide variety of options and idea brought to the table. Encouraging employees to thoroughly analyze all aspects of the options, from the moral and ethical implications, to the response they can expect from their opposition. With each decision appoint one or more group member to play devil’s advocate to the suggested options, ask that person to analyze and make a case against each of the suggestions (Sims & Sauser, 2013). Rotate this position throughout the group so that one person is not refuting the groups ideas consistently. Continually encouraging and rewarding contrasting views can hedge the complacency groups fall into after working together for periods of time. Management should be active listeners in the decision-making process being careful to not assert their preference towards a certain option to avoid the group conforming to the preferences of their superiors before the options are fully analyzed (Rose, 2011). When working on a group project, there are certain skills that are required to make sure that the tasks are being carried out smoothly. With that in mind, it is critical to keep an open line of communication as well as an understanding of the other individuals in the group. The following scenario is of a group project I was a part of that had a breakdown in the two points expressed above.
Power is the ability to obtain, retain, and motivate people and to organize informational and material resources to accomplish a task( Leadership, n.d). Power is central to the leadership process in the development of a manager’s self-confidence and willingness to support staff members ( Schmidt & Wilkinson, 1990). The desire for power is universal. From this vantage point, power should be accepted as a natural part of any individual organization. Power is not evenly distributed among individuals or groups, but every individual has some degree of power.
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
The topic of the presentation was unanimously decided and each member was handed their topic in which they were supposed to do their research. Some of the members were happy with their topics, while few were left with no options and finally agreed. In the third week, the group reached the Norming stage (Tuckman, 1965) and by considering everyone’s availability from classes and job commitments, every Wednesday’s were decided to meet for the team meetings. Besides, a group was created on ‘whatsapp’ (a smartphone application) known as ‘Healthcare assignment group’ for quick interactions and to update members about any changes to group meetings. It definitely proved an important application for the completion of our team’s project.
Working in groups is challenging at times. Other times it is very rewarding. We are so focused on life that we do not take time to reflect on things as much as we should. Being in a Groups class has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I have begun to question, explore, and even understand how things work. I even get how they work sometimes. Not only is there a process involved in making individual decisions, process is involved in group decisions as well. This paper attempts give insight into my reflection of my group decision process.
A group can be define as ‘any number of people who (1) interact with one another; (2) are psychologically aware of one another and (3) perceive themselves to be a group’ (Mullins, L, 2007, p.299). Certain task can only be performed by combined effort of a group. Organisation can use groups to carry out projects, which will help to achieve its overall aim. However, for the group to be successful they must understand what is expected of them and have the right skill to complete the task. . (Mullins, L, 2006)
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
