First, don’t try to memorize, but try to understand instead. That is a major mistake that many student fall into. Studying hard was to learn by heart every single piece of information in the book which is really time-intensive. That should not be the case with studying smart is just simply because memorization corresponds to studying hard, but understanding the knowledge taught corresponds to studying smart. Complex topics are not easy to understand therefore two good studying habits will help you understand any complex topics. The first studying habit is to establish links and associations. Relating complex topics to similar knowledge that you already understand or comprehended would make the complex to become easier. To do that try to imagine the subject matter as vivid as possible by creating a picture for the material you are studying, this way you can direct a movie in your mind that will help you memorize fasts faster and for a longer period of time. So instead of memorizing numbers, words, or sentences all you have to do is to imagine the picture in your mind to help you memorize the facts. The second, studying habit is to have emotions toward the materials you are studying by having fun while studying and to develop and interest toward the subject. This would make it the most important step towards a smarter way of studying. The second procedure that should be considered in studying smart is to
One assignment I am including in my portfolio is about a test we had.On the test we had problems about writing and using linear equations, getting m & b, and scatter plots. On the test I had lots of trouble on one problem the problem read the input is triple the output on the section of getting m & b.I had no idea how to do this problem not because I don’t pay attention during class because I do pay attention during class. It’s just that I never understood the worded out problems I only understood the numbered problems.Since all Mrs.Goldstein’s test all al closed notes I studied a lot to get a good grade on the quiz but this time we had a choice to write some notes on a piece of paper. This was a individual test like all the test I have had and
One thing I can do to help me study is to ask one of my older siblings to quiz me on the topic and/or chapter. Another thing I can do is make flash cards so I am able to quiz myself when I am unable to get help from another person. Essentially, these flash cards would have vocabulary terms and their definitions on them, or maybe even a math problem and its correct answer.
Everyone has a different viewpoint on what it is like to go through a hardship in your life. Some people view struggles in life as a strength and that they build character. Others view struggles as a sign of defeat and that they should just give up. For example, the hardest thing that a middle class, 17 year old girl might have had to endure in her life so far is a heart-wrenching breakup with her first boyfriend of three months. While a lower class, 17 year old girl has had to take over the role of mother in her house with 4 young siblings, no father, and a mother who is at work all day, barely breaking even at the end of the month. Both girls are going through a hardship in their lives, but one might view the other as less severe of a struggle
I entered pre-calculus the same way I entered every other class in high school: as a game, a trophy and an easy A that I could achieve with my (perceived) supreme intellect alone. Sure enough, the course was more challenging than anything I had encountered, and my previous game plan left me ill-equipped. My first test experience was eye-opening. It proved to be a resounding failure that stays with me to this day. It was only after this test that I began to question my strategies and, indeed, the very way that I had been approaching my
During my last semester at college, I postponed thinking about preparing for my tests. As each test day came closer, I got worried and desperately started cramming. I drank enough coffee to keep the whole city awake and woke up thinking that I would get a low grade. Eventually, I realized that students who always earned A's on their tests were not just lucky, but they really studied hard all through the semester. There are different ways to prepare for a specific test, and each individual must perfect his or her own style. I have developed a process that involves five steps to prepare for a test.
There are many strategies that can be used to help students study efficiently. After participating in the “VARK Questionnaire” the results revealed that I have multimodal preferences. (A multimodal learning preference is a preferred way of learning new information or material that incorporates several different styles of learning. Different modes of learning are combined such as, visual and auditory). Two of my strongest points in studying are reading/writing and kinesthetic. As I don’t use one specific strategy, I have many different study strategies. A very common technique is writing down information using the internet as a source. Most of the research that I provide is aided by the internet. I like to take notes on the research so that it will be easier to summarize the information. Another common strategy I use involves reviewing the information I have gathered repeatedly. Even though I tend to understand certain difficult topics with visual aids but I still use memorization as a key method. In most of my school related environments, memorization was a technique which was used influenced by instructors the most. Visual presentation, diagrams and charts are also very helpful in the studying process (VARK, 2013). When I am studying complicated and/or lengthy topics visual and physical representations are very essential. The use of visual aid helps me process the information more efficiently and remember the material. Some topics can be very complex and harder to understand, when you have situations of this type I address them with another individual.
When it comes to preparing for and taking tests there are many myths. There are also many different ways to prepare yourself for success. During the course of this paper we will discuss the myths of studying for a test, time management, how to reduce test anxiety, and the different types of tests and tips on how to take them.
Kimora reflected on successful test taking strategies such as marking the test date on a calendar, begin studying days ahead, make a study plan of what to study, use time master sheet to break down things to study in specific blocks of time, use index cards, quiz yourself before the test, get a good night's sleeps, eat a good breakfast before the test, and drink a glass of water to your brain is hydrated and has
Such preparation should include: attaining basic mathematics and English skills (study from other resources if needed) and aim to pass the placement test so that remedial classes are no longer an obligation. Then, enroll for a study skills course such as note taking and time management during the first semester so that it helps to ease learning experience and builds a foundation in learning method (Raley 18). Taking the study course is exceptionally crucial because it keeps our heads up towards our goal and motivates us to not get of the track. Also, academic talent alone might not be enough to push certain students to ace in college. Even for smart students, if they do not know how to manage their time properly or procrastinate in their study, they might be likely to just pass on the par in their
I try to remember and learn everything word for word in the but and find myself getting overwhelmed. Dr.Chew explains deep learning as, “ relating new information to prior knowledge or making information personally meaningful” (Chew, How to Get the Most Out of Studying: Part 2 of 5, 2011). I find the software thepoint and the practice questions very helpful in helping me understand what I know and need to go back and review. My studying technique consist of listening to podcast, taking the NCLEX style quizzes, studying with a group, as well as reading the assigned text. When listening to the podcast I try to follow along with the book and highlight what the person speaks on and take notes from there. I use the NCLEX style quizzes to help with my anxiety of how the test will be as far as the 1 question per page style. I find is very helping at the end of the quizes, I can see the rationales and compare how and why the correct answers is such. When studying with a group we all section off specific objective and do those, come together and read over everyones answers along with looking at the page to see where we got the answers. If any one disagree we all look at the book and come up with the correct answer as well. Reading the text is my least favorite thing to do because it takes up the most time and I find myself skimming and trying to remember only key terms and words in the
There are three types of learning styles. They are: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. An auditory learner processes information by hearing and discussing the information. Visual learners process information through visuals such as charts, pictures, and other types of printed information. Kinesthetic learners process information by muscle movements and experiences that are hands-on. Through the assessment I have discovered that my strongest learning style is a visual style with a score of 13, followed by kinesthetic, 8, and lastly auditory with a score of 4. Based upon this, my strength is using a visual learning style. The things I do now in studying that are within the guidelines include: read the book chapters and highlight while reading, pay special attention to charts and diagrams shown in the book or in class. By reading and highlighting I have found I can quickly go back through the information and reread the important facts, helping me remember them better. The more times I go over the information, the more effective I am come test day. I have found it very easy to read charts and diagrams in textbooks. Generally, by being able to read certain charts, it is much easier and faster to comprehend the information than if I was to read the paragraphs about it. A new study strategy that I will implement will include: writing what I highlight down into my own handwriting, adding ...
What it means to be smart is to know a lot and have a large education. It means to know when to speak and know what to say. It means to know how to work out problems such car issues or math problems such as taxes. When a person is smart it is normally met with the response that this person knows everything about one thing or the other, but being smart takes a lot more than just having a high interest or education about one subject. Being smart is very under rated and maybe is some spots over rated.
Finding a good place to study will help a bunch, by making sure the spot is free of distractions (Dartmouth). Setting up study groups and using the library will also help when it is time to study (Hansen). Make a plan to study two hours for every hour that is spent in class, but just make sure that 30 minutes breaks are taken often and do not study the same subject after the break (Berkeley and Hansen). Knowing a good way to learn also helps. Some students learn better in the day time or better in the nighttime. Just figure out the best way to learn and then use that time to study (Dartmouth).
When the teacher assigns a test the first thought that comes to a students mind is never a good one. I find preparing for a test very hard. Even if it is an easy test. It feels like I suffer all kinds of anxiety when studying.
The first thing a person can do to improve their study habits is take better notes. When taking notes you do not have to write down every word the teacher says, if you do that you’re not going to know what's important and what's not important. If you do that you’re going to be studying things that’s not important and that could confuse you and make studying really boring. Write down only the things that you think are important. You can even read ahead in a book and highlight what you think is good information to know. If the teacher says anything more than once, or puts emphasis on something, highlight that it could be on your next test. Good thinking skills are especially important in note taking. Everyone has good thinking skills but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they use them. Good thinking skills can’t be studied they must be built up over...
