Introduction A plant needs water and sunshine to survive. However, each plant thrives with different amounts of water and sunshine. Like plants, one must recognize and implement his or her individual strengths to become a great leader. I want to be an extraordinary leader, so I have gone down an experiential path of what my strengths are and how to implement them to flourish. To determine my strengths, I used the Reflected Best Self Exercise created by the University of Michigan and Gallup’s StrengthsFinder assessment. The StrengthsFinder is a self-report assessment that determines five top strengths for each person. It is very rare that two people get the same set of five strengths, so this analysis is very reliable. My top five strengths from the StrengthsFinder assessment were restorative, empathy, input, relator, and responsibility. I think I possess a little bit of each of these traits. Restorative is when a person seeks out solutions to their problems. I always eradicate complications that arise in my life. I tend to be empathetic with people who are close to me; I can feel their pain and sadness. I find that many people come to me when they need advice, and I love making people feel better. Input refers to my curiosity. I enjoy collecting interesting items and learning about new places 0r subjects. It can be very difficult for me to part ways with objects from my childhood because I have memories around everything. Relator accounts to my close relationships with others. I like getting to know others on a closer basis. I feel very comfortable and secure in genuine relationships. Finally, I am a responsible person. My best friend Hannah sent me a story of when she got her wisdom teeth removed. The surgery was during the summer, and she was bummed out that she could not enjoy the nice weekend at her cabin. Additionally, Hannah was not recovering well from the surgery and her medications. A few days after the surgery, I showed up at her house with a bag full of ice cream and a smile on my face; I wanted to cheer up my best friend and help soothe her painful mouth. I made sure to bring the varieties of ice cream that she would enjoy. I sat with my friend for several hours watching HGTV shows and chatting with her, even though I got responds of muffled words and head shakes. Hannah explained, “You really cared about how I was feeling and how I felt mattered to you. This kind gesture is one that I will never forget, and I know it had solidified our friendship”. Another story of my kindness was from my friend, Sloan. Sloan moved to my school when she was a sophomore, I was a junior, and I knew who she was because she also joined my dance team. On the first day of school, I saw her sitting alone in choir class, so I sat next to her and sparked up a conversation. It turned out that we were the same voice part, so we sat next to each other for the whole semester. Sloan recalled this day because it was her first day at a new school, and she was very nervous. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Strengths Finder 2.0 uses an online assessment to evaluate the individuals unique talents by having the taker rate how they view a particular question in 20 seconds or less (Rath, 2007). After taking the assessment, my five strengths were determined to be achiever, maximizer, input, arranger, and relator (Gallup StrengthsFinder, 2012).
Before taking the StrengthsFinder® assessment I didn’t know what type of leader I was, but I felt I had leadership traits that I could not describe. After answering several questions from the Clifton StrengthsFinder® 2.0, I found out my top five strengths. These strengths consist of individualization, arranger, learner, input and responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to go over my top five strengths to talk about which four domains of leadership these strengths fall under, how class material is applied, and the actions to best utilize my strengths.
The most effective leaders know better than to try to be someone they are not. They should always be searching for opportunities to reinvest in their strengths. Leaders need to stay true to who they are and make sure they have the right people around them. The book says those who surround themselves with similar personalities are at a disadvantage to those who are secure enough to be surrounded by people who strengths will compliment theirs.
Understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses is essential to becoming and being a good leader. “Purposeful leaders understand who they are” (Mayfield, 2013). The author of this paper has had previous opportunities to lead, and will reflect on her experiences using the assigned inventory. She will evaluate her skill set and discuss ways she can be an advocate for change with the hospital and community in which she is employed. Lastly, she will identify one personal goal for her leadership growth and explore different avenues for obtaining that goal.
I tend to agree with this assessment as it brings out my best qualities as strengths in the right way and enables me to assess myself to realize my potential. The strength that can best describe me is the balance which also means consistency. This has helped me cultivate my reputation and has helped me balance my choices. The one that surprised me is courage since at most times I am a team player, and this rarely enables me to stand out
One of my greatest skills is being able to be compassionate towards others. By placing myself into someone else’s shoes, I find myself being able to better understand where other people are coming from. I am an extremely caring person that will go to great lengths for anyone. I can easily overlook the differences in other people, and this is what helps me get along with almost anyone that I come across. In order to lead people in a positive direction you need to be able to relate to them on a more personal level. It is much easier when people feel comfortable around their leader. I always like to lend a helping hand or even a shoulder to cry on when it is needed. My strengths include integrity, optimism, faith, innovation, and adaptability. These strengths are important to have in leadership positions. Leaders should have a firm hold on their beliefs and morals in order to have a positive impact on people. Keeping my commitments is crucial to me, because I am a woman of my word. I think this is a good trait in leadership, because people need to be able to count on the person that they look up to. The top five character strengths that I predicted are judgment, bravery, love of learning, creativity, and fairness. Now, I will explain why I believe these are my strengths: 1. Bravery. I am a fairly self-conscious person, and that is because I have social anxiety disorder. I am constantly agonizing about peoples’ perception of me. Despite struggling with this mental illness, I still try. Every day, I do things that terrify me, such as raising my hand in class, asking questions, offering my opinion in class discussions, doing presentations, socializing, etc. Even though speaking up terrifies me, I am vocal in the face of injustice, bigotry, and discrimination, even if it results in conflict with others. 2. Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
Leaders will no matter what have an influence on our world. They have missions, dreams and ambition, and with these things they are bound to go far. For leaders, what makes these dreams come true is having strong qualities such as leadership practices, values and strengths. If developed and learned how to use correctly, these are what take leaders to the next level and accomplish great things. In the following paper I will talk about leadership in our ever-changing world, explore my leadership practices, values and strengths as well as elaborate on the goals I have made to challenge myself as a leader.
The subject of personal leadership is widely recognised nowadays as it is often believed that successful leaders not only have the ability to lead other, but also know well and able to control oneself. In order to understand more about myself as a leader, I registered for this course. Around two months of this course, I have gained considerable knowledge which will be clearly documented in this Reflective Learning Diary. Other strengths include being self-confident, conscientious, diligent and determined. It was interesting to see my lower scores as well; the lowest average score was sensitivity (3.2), followed closely by self-assuredness and perception and empathy. Although I consider myself sensitive, I believe the sense of sensitivity does not apply as often towards others I interact with. For example, I often speak my mind and voice my opinion with little thought of the consequence or impact it might have on those around me. Thus, sensitivity is not one of my existing strengths, but rather an opportunity for growth. I also found it interesting to note how I scored significantly lower in the human skill, and higher in technical, which I did not expect.
