I completed my Step-Up Connection at the Bedford Care Center in Hattiesburg, and I participated there for a total of five hours. The observations I made there consisted of both physical and speech therapy, memory games, and discussions about paperwork, pay, and hours. This experience helped me to better understand the medical side of speech therapy and the differences between the medical field and school system. The Step-Up Connection is important because it forces the student to see a completely different side of the career path, and it helps broaden the knowledge of the student because they get to talk to another person in the field besides their mentor. I think the Step-Up Connection could become a little side project for a different career; for example, …show more content…
I chose speech pathology because it was easier to help a group of people than chemical engineering, but the Step-Up Connection could allow students who have multiple options to have some hours in their other choice. If the student has just one career path than the Step-Up Connection could stay exactly like it is now. The first observation that I made at Bedford Care Center was that the speech pathologists work in the same room as the physical therapists. This makes for a crowded environment, to me, in the work space. The main therapy that I was able to observe was Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation( NMES); this therapy consists of placing small pads on the patient's neck and slowly increasing the intensity of the shocks. This therapy is also coupled with swallowing exercises like normal swallowing, moving the tongue while
Subsequently what is done is that selected high schools develop a curriculum that is organized around a specific career cluster, which are like a specialized charter school. The goal is to feature a series advanced “pathway” courses that can help students to enrich their knowledge through work-based learning and academics. In turn, this specialized education will allow student to demonstrate their understanding through assessments and industry credentialing opportunities. As well these schools are enrolled in a learning exchange that have partnerships that are organized to support the programs of study by coordinating statewide networks of education partners, businesses, industry associations, labor, and other organizations (2013, p. 21-23). Consequently, the program is driven to help high school students develop a career path and to receive exploratory education that will given them an advantage in either college endeavors or in the job market.
A large part of the reason I would like to join Year Up is because of the opportunity to receive an education and start my career in computer programming, without financial barriers stopping me before I can get started. The chance to receive an education in programming, a field that has interested me for as long as I knew it existed, is too great for me to let it pass. I have been interested in computers since I was introduced to them at a young age, and the idea of making functional programs has always been fascinating to me. More importantly, Year Up gives me a chance to receive experience in a professional environment and kick start my career. Without this program, getting a job in this field with no prior experience is near impossible, however Year Up provides me with the six-month internship
Over the course of two years, I was able to create bonds and gain long lasting mentors from these experiences. In this program, I did case studies on sexual health, neurology, and public health. With these case studies, I was able to practice leadership skills and investigative thinking along with my peers. Through the Emory Pipeline Program, I also learned new technology within the medical field and how the new technology aided our local hospitals. These experiences opened doors for me to explore what my career calling was.
Good interpersonal skills, the ability to take another person's perspective, and the ability to problem solve are crucial characteristics for a speech pathologist. A major article from the Journal of Nursing Education titled, “The Teaching Effectiveness of Standardized Patience,” demonstrated that interpersonal skills have an overwhelmingly “positive, creative and meaningful results” in clinical environments (Becker, 2006). Interpersonal skills involve the ability to have organic conversations with supervisors, medical technicians, parents, clients, and students. It also requires being able to state diagnoses, strategies, and plans for a client’s speech program in clear terms. When a speech pathologist is able to communicate in a positive and comforting manner, this creates a rapport based on trust and understanding. When all
...ecause it gave me an opportunity to hear the perspective of other health care professionals that are not in the same field as me. I also got to learn what role each health care professional could contribute to the Triple Aim goal. Also, this experience would make it easier for me to work with other professionals during my course of study and after I graduate because I have been a little exposure to what it is going to be like discussing and trying to figure out ways we can contribute to the Triple Aim goal together as a team.
I feel that the Biomedical Academy would be a great addition to my education. As a current eighth grader, I am becoming more active in making decisions about my future, and after exploring all options, I have decided that the Academy would definitely be a great place for me to further my education.

There are a lot of people that just go into nursing and don 't really know what they are getting themselves into so from starting from the bottom really helps you to get to the top the right way and learn more while you are heading there. My goal in the future would be an RN working in pediatrics or even the emergency room in a hospital, I volunteered at CMC hospital for about 3 years in the emergency room and I really enjoyed the environment, it made a learning experience for me to see if I actually wanted to be in the medical field and if I could handle it. I am glad I signed up to volunteer in my community it was a great feeling to be there for people and help out actually see how a hospital is run and what procedures you need to know also. It would be nice in a couple months to work as an LNA in a hospital because then I would already have my foot in the door. But it is very difficult to get into when you only have a year experience in a long-term care
Prepare for upcoming therapy sessions by organizing the treatment locations based on the patient’s needs. These patients have so many different needs that each one must have there own individual time treatments, exercises, and this list just goes on and on. These people have to clean each individual rooms after therapy. They watch the patient’s development during therapy sessions and make notes on how the patient is responding. Therapists and physical therapy assistants use these notes and reports to evaluate the usefulness and helpfulness of specific treatments for patients. This helps the therapists to determine if the treatment is working or if it's not working. If the treatment is unsuccessful they evaluate the patients and test them again because the body is so complex no one can definitely tell what is exactly wrong with them. Help patients move from one area of therapy to another – aides should have physical strength because they may have to move several immobile patients each day. Aides are there to help patients walk, push them in wheelchairs, or assist in sitting and standing. They are even sometimes responsible for helping to pick them up and move them to another location. Without these aides, the therapist job would become increasingly harder and more difficult. The therapist must have the following skills to become successful: Compassion, Attention to Detail, Dexterity, People
Working with the clients at Silver Saddle, facilitating anger management group and being able to identify the clients needs have been the greatest experience that has had a large impact on my learning. Working with clients helped me set a professional standpoint while maintain healthy boundaries with my clients, which is something I struggled with because I wanted to be more like a mom to the clients. Talking with my field instructor helped me establish more clear boundaries, which is something that’s very import as a social worker so this impacted my learning. Having the ability to address my client’s needs while co-facilitating
I came into this class not really knowing any more then people can get insurance and money for food from the human service department. My eyes were definitely opened those first couple weeks of class. I have realized that there is so much more that a human services worker can do. I also learned that most people who use the services are truly desperate and need help. I have learned a lot about seeing the big picture and not just what’s in front of me.
The work I do each day allows me to learn and develop the skills necessary to progress on my career path. In order to best help others in the field of education, I believe that I must seek to improve my understanding and abilities. The long-term goals I have for my career include acquiring my doctorate degree, publishing writings to assist leaders, and improving education quality and access, especially to underserved populations. My short-term career goals are smaller steps to achieve those goals, such as taking this course, attending professional development training, and working diligently within my current professional position to assist others and cultivate my current abilities. The DSL program will assist me in achieving my aforementioned goals by providing me with quality educational teachers, mentors, experiences, and opportunities to develop.
Ever since anyone could remember, men have always been above women, but little do they know that at one point women had more power than men. However, the roles of man and woman flipped very quickly and drastically, like a supernova, changing history. And although men dominate most fields of work and important roles, women are very crucial to the stability of society. Without women, we wouldn’t have knowledge about the cause of HIV, molecular structures of coal and graphite, x-ray diffraction, or genetic transportation. But just because women aren’t in power anymore doesn’t mean they are powerless. There are rights movements and education movements supported by both men and women that stem from gynarchy, gyneolatry and gynaeceum.
