Arguably, the most recognizable character from the Star Trek series is Captain James Kirk. However, in the recent revival of the series it was in fact Spock who took over the captain’s chair. While both of the characters both have admiral qualities that suit them for leadership roles, only one is best fit for captain. Due to his ability to think logically, command others, and show humanity, James Kirk is more suited for the role of captain. In the episode of Star Trek entitled “The Naked Time”, the Enterprise and its crew is infected with a disease from another planet, causing those compromised to lose control of their emotions and reveal their true selves. While other crew members acted out in obscene ways such as acting violently toward others, being overly flirtatious, and even committing suicide, Kirk was able to keep his wits and even protect others. Throughout the Star Trek series there are multiple examples of Kirk taking control of his ship. A specific episode of the series in which this quality shines through is “Space Seed”. In this episode, the Enterprise comes across a ship containing a crew of criminals from the 1990s. Because Kirk needed to protect himself and everyone else on board, it was necessary for him to take charge. He did this by ordering Scott and McCoy to board the ship and ordering a surveillance on Khan.
