The LWC Color Guard depends on the capability of its captains and how well they can do their job as a section leader. A leader, in general, is someone who many people look to for advice, instruction, motivation, and most importantly, encouragement. This means that it is important for a leader to have the ability to make difficult decisions and do what is best for the color guard. Some qualities that are necessary for a color guard captain are compassion, character, and courage. Compassion in a captain shows everyone around them that they care. Showing true compassion towards a group of people tells them that their leader is concerned with not only their strengths but also their weaknesses. A popular quote used by many guard members is that “Color Guard is god's gift to the marching band”. No matter your religion, the message of the quote is clear. Many guard members feel that the marching band needs them. Most band members would disagree with this, however, the color guard is superior to the band because the guard has to work harder, has more interesting equipment, and a better offseason activity than the marching band.

I tried out for color guard in March of 2016. My experience with joining color guard has been one of the best decisions that I have made so far in my life. Not only has it changed me as a person, it has changed the way I look at situations. It sounds weird that an activity could change so much in my life, but it truly has. Everyone has a different definition of what makes someone a leader. My definition is not a statement of requirements, but more so a list of characteristics. I believe it takes a strong, independent, dependable, open-minded, thoughtful, selfless, smart and creative, someone who can work well with others, able to work under pressure, respectful, and experienced individual to be a leader. I believe it is someone who knows who they are and know their morals, someone who has already found who they are in life and accepts who they are, making what I believe the most important characteristic is, is someone who knows and sticks with their personal values. If someone cannot respect values and stick to their word, then how can they be a leader of others? A leader takes a lot of work, but if you are good at it, it may seem like nothing. Some people are leaders and do not even know it, like role models. When little kids look up to certain people that have impacted their lives in a way, they will see those people as role models. Truth is, leaders are everywhere and not everyone knows or can see that. It's not always the person who stands out for taking control or being bossy, but the one with the characteristics and high values that do the right things, even when no one is watching.

According to Churchill, taking a leadership position means having a vision of what can be done and accomplished within a span of time. One should be committed to the goals and to the people that he or she leads. A leader must be responsible for the achievement of the objectives and the welfare of the followers. One should be in a position to take risks and accept failures whenever they occur and accept recognition for both.
Color can be a semiotic resource. It has many uses in the cultural association of signs. Some features that contribute as a signifier are saturation, purity, modulation, value and hue. Red can signify danger, green can stand for hope. In most countries black is a sign of mourning. However, in some parts of Europe, brides wear black for their wedding. In China and some other Eastern Asian countries, white is considered the color for mourning. While in America and most of Europe, white is a sign of purity and warn by brides. These contrasts of cultural semiotics make color partly unpredictable. In order for the color to function as a sign, there must be a consensus of meaning. In most cases there is not a consensus that is shared by all societies. There are some regularities and this is what makes color function as a semiotic resource. The challenge is understanding the motivations and interests of different groups. Some colors translate well and some do not. Finding these regularities within groups and applying them as semiotic resources is a challenge (Kress, 2002). Some associations to color are universal and these connections could spread as communication becomes more global (Eiseman, 2000).
A section leader is someone who is willing to go the extra mile and be the example. Someone one is willing to devote their time and energy into developing a section that helps create a magnificent band. To be completely honest I lost sight of that last year, which wasn't my goal as a leader. Although I can't change the past, I can set myself up for the future. The only thing I can do now is learn from my mistakes and push foward to be the best musician and leader I can be. I plan to fully take the advice I've been given and try to better myself. It is impossible to become perfect on your instrument, that you can always learn more to better yourself and others. This same rule can be applied to our everyday life to become not only a model citizen, but a wise person.
Stewardship. The principle of stewardship demands engagement in the promotion of compassion. It requires that the individual take responsibility for their role in the community. These responsibilities include an awareness of the issues which affect the group. This obligation demands that the individual place the needs of the community above their own personal interests. In placing community requirements above a singular agenda, the individual is encouraged to view the community with personal interest. Rather than a commitment to a set of individualistic values, the community member may seek to balance “individual freedoms against the common good” (Clear & Karp, 1999, p. 126).
Leaders lead. They lead by example, by demonstrating and living out organizational values, and by being seen. A good leader will never ask a teammate to do something they are not willing to do. Leaders also clearly understand the central purpose of their organization and ensure it is crystal clear to every member of the team...and they are relentless in pursuing it.
First we have to ask ourselves, what makes a good leader? Depending on who you ask, that answer will vary. A good leader is someone who is very goal oriented, but bases their goals as a group, not on one’s own desires. A goal oriented leader would use language such as, “We need to get this done,” rather than, “I need this done”. There are many different things I think of when I think of what leadership means to me. My idea of leadership is to be able to inspire others, get them excited to do something, motivate them and set an example to others. I also think that showing respect to others is a key part of leadership. You don’t just need leadership qualities, but you need to be a successful leader. To me being a successful leader is being able to have people follow you and not disrespect you. If you are a great leader your followers start to respect you more. To be a leader you also need to have certain qualities like being sociable, intelligent, have patience to deal with situations. A leader needs to be motivated or they will be a failure. Throughout society today, colorism and racism play a huge role in many lives. Though the similarities between the two may confused individuals, there happens to be a difference between colorism and racism. Racism is the belief that all members of each race processes certain characteristics or abilities specific to that race. Gloria Yamato says, “Racism is persuasive to the point that we take most of its manifestations for granted believing, “That’s Life” (Yamato 65). Racism can vary seeing as though you could be a specific type of racist. The four different types of racism that exist today are the “aware/blatant, the aware/covert, the unaware/unintentional, and lastly the unaware/self-righteous” (Yamato 66). Colorism is prejudice and discrimination against individuals with a darker skin tone. Colorism typically happens between individuals of the same ethnic and racial groups. In society today, colorism exists due to the accumulated experiences of racism, “which can generate questions and doubts in the minds of people of color about their place in a predominately white society” (Osajima141).
Colorism has became a huge issue in today’s society. Colorism is an issue because, it is a form of racism, it reflects back on the days of slavery, it is overall rude, and jail terms are affected.
