The two agencies of socialization I pick are: neighborhood and school. Except family, neighborhood and school are play an important role of our development. They will affect our view of value, belief and behavior.
There are many similarities for us to choose a neighborhood to live or a school to educate. We will look for the environment first if the neighborhood or school safe, how about the people surrounding, are they nice. My parents very love us, very focus on our education and behave. The neighborhood I grow up is not very wealthy. There are two gangster team in our community. If you don’t bother them, those gangster won’t make trouble to you. Luckily, there are some family next to our house are very nice. We usually support and help each other. Therefore, as soon as I don’t went far from house, I still feel pretty safe of the environment where I am. I usually play with my neighbor’s kids in front of my house or their house. But talking about school, I usually be discriminated in the class. I remember one of the girl in my class and her brother usually pick on me, embarrasses me. They think they are richer and smarter than me. I usually feel scare or anxiety when I go to school. I don’t know what I will experience on that day. I develop low self-esteem, very quiet in class. Luckily, my teacher is very nice and my study ability is not that bad. I usually maintain a very good grade in class. My mom always tell us if we want a better life, we need to work hard and have good education. Since I have a very supportive family and a nice relationship with my neighbor, my behavior in school and home is very different. In school I always quiet, some time I will depress. Is it a coincidence that highly urbanized areas are full of crime and always statistically higher than small towns and rural areas? A child that is being brought up in a metropolitan area that is full of violent crimes is flooded in a sense and has nothing to do but to breath in some of the negative influences that go on around him. However, I moved to Toronto alone when I was 12 for the better education system. Ever since then, I was raised by my aunt's family. Gong back to my early childhood, both of my parents practiced authoritative parenting style. They have always been loving and caring, yet they never spoiled me to a point where I could not appreciate their love and care. Coming from Korea’s competitive and strict education system, I witnessed many of my friends suffering from their parents’ high academic expectations already at the age of 12 or even before then. However, my parents never pressured me with school and their priorities were always the subjects and activities I enjoyed. Although, they still ensured that I was doing reasonably well in my less preferred classes, they never forced me to spend extra hours or sent me to numerous outside-of-school programs for such courses. When English became my favourite subject, they provided me with english tutors and eventually sent me to Canada. When I finally moved to Canada, my aunt’s family also practiced authoritative parenting style. My aunt and uncle already had two adult sons and were experienced enough to raise me in a good environment. They were a little stressed/worried about disciplining me at first—disciplining someone else’s child can be difficult—they eventually managed to do so by discussing it with my parents. When people in a neighborhood fail to care about the neighborhood it shows. The people who like to engage in bad things begin to feel safe in indulging in bad practices. Kids begin misbehaving and when not corrected just continue to be bad and cause more damage to the neighborhood, more litter, more graffiti and more broken windows. Vandalism can run rampant and uncontrolled. Anti-social behaviors will become the norm and crime will breed from petty small crimes to crimes like murder.
If a child is raised in a good neighborhood they are likely to be raised well. Children in a good environment are likely to have a better attitude and behavior. Especially when it comes to schooling. They will do well in school and those school systems are likely to have a higher rate of graduating children and children who actually take their education seriously. Better neighborhoods are known to lead to higher test scores. Making sure that a child has a safe, clean, peaceful and comforting environment is necessary and important for your child’s development. Brooks-Gunn stated that income has a gigantic influence on your development, and the wealthier develop into better neighborhoods than the less wealthy. I do not believe this is necessarily true. I grew up with a low-income, and I lived in a wonderful neighborhood. Everybody was respectful and would help each other when they needed it. Everybody was outgoing and friendly. I feel like these are traits that the people in my neighborhood passed down to me.
The two neighborhoods that I chose to use for this assignment are vastly different. The main reason is because they are on opposite sides of the country. The first neighborhood that I visited is the one that I grew up in. This neighborhood is in Connecticut, on the East Coast, all the way across the country from the neighborhood that I currently live in here in West Hollywood. Most of my family lives in Connecticut and Massachusetts and I’m the only one who lives on the West Coast. A big difference is that the neighborhood in Connecticut has houses that are more spaced out, have larger lawns, and very many more trees. There are very few apartments there, unlike where I live now where my entire street is almost all apartment buildings.

The manifest functions of school are to educate students the social norms, and the knowledge and skills that help them become economically productive in order to benefit the society. But students not only learn from the academic curriculum but they also benefit from socialize with their teachers and peers.
