There are various influences on everyone’s lives while growing up. I believe the greatest of these influences is the neighborhood you grew up in. I grew up in a quite large, welcoming neighborhood. While living in this neighborhood, I was outgoing and remarkably talkative. Making friends became second nature to me. Playing outdoors from sunrise to sundown playing sports or exploring the outdoors with my friends became a daily routine for me. I was outgoing, talkative, and active. I believe this is the result of the neighborhood I grew up in. Growing up in a massive neighborhood magnificent. My neighborhood flooded with kids around my age to hang out with. Brooks-Gunn stated that income has a gigantic influence on your development, and the wealthier develop into better neighborhoods than the less wealthy. I do not believe this is necessarily true. I grew up with a low-income, and I lived in a wonderful neighborhood. Everybody was respectful and would help each other when they needed it. Everybody was outgoing and friendly. I feel like these are traits that the people in my neighborhood passed down to me. In my opinion, Brooks-Gunn’s argument that the aspects of your environment influences your development is a valid one. In my neighborhood, my peers were wonderful. Before I met them, I would typically just stay inside and watch television or play video games, and when I became friends with them, they would convince me to withdraw from my house to play with them daily. They convinced me to go to the park, play sports, or go on adventures through the neighborhood with them, and we would play outside from sunrise to sundown everyday. A person in the other spectrum, which is born into a higher class, will most likely stay wealth. This leads to an endless cycle of generations staying within the working class realm. The likely hood of a person moving up a class is rare but it does exist. People need to be pushed and have a drive to keep going and to keep trying. That is why we are told we have an equal chance in life so we can all strive for better even though in reality we do not all have an equal chance. But nonetheless people should try to become successful even if they never make it in life because a life without purpose, goals, or ambitions is a meaningless life. As humans we need a reason to live, another day for people to take advantage and make the best of it.
What Parents Need to Know about Playgrounds The essay, “Learning Responsibility on City Sidewalks” by Jane Jacobs, gives insight into the positive aspects that come out of neighborly interaction and expresses how the creation of playgrounds within the community can taint a child’s upbringing. The use of playgrounds is said to lead to a lack of joint responsibility which can have an influence on the youth within a community. The author feels that parks do not benefit pubescents in same the way that adult interaction does; therefore, they are frugal communal wastes.

Before the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, the Jewish people lived all throughout Europe freely, just like everyone else. The Jewish people, mostly lived in Poland, the Soviet Union, Hungary, and Romania. They came from all different walks of life and all had a different life story. The Jewish people were able to talk, dress, and work, how, when and where they chose. They could work as an accountant, a doctor, a teacher, or a farmer. The Jewish people could live their dreams. If they dreamt it, they could pursue it. The Jewish people lived a perfectly normal life as free human beings, the way it should be. The Nazis changed everything when they gained enough power and started sending the Jewish population into ghettos. There, the Jews’ lives changed dramatically. They were confined to the over-crowded ghettos, which were horrible places where no human being should ever have had to experience as they were locked in like wild animals, starved and without other basic human needs.
The term “ghetto” came from the Jewish Quarter in Venice that was made in 1516, when the Venetian experts required the entire city’s Jewish people to live in this area. The Ghettos separated the Jews from the Non-Jews and from other Jewish communities. There were three types of ghettos, closed, open, and destruction ghettos. My thoughts are that the destruction ghettos are concentration or death camps. The ghetto was not a Nazi invention.

While inequality is by no means a new concept within the United States, the after effects have continued to have an unmatched impact on the racial disparities in society. Specifically, in the housing market, as residential segregation persists along racial and ethnic lines. Moreover, limiting the resources available to black communities such as homeownership, quality education, and wealth accumulation. As stated before, a neighborhood plays an important factor in the upbringing of children and youths. Living in a poverty stricken neighborhood has negative consequences such as a lower educational achievement and a higher chance of committing crimes. The wealth concentrated in affluent neighborhoods stays in the neighborhood and are rarely spreaded to areas in poverty. Children growing up in poorer neighborhoods are not given the same opportunities as children growing up in well-of neighborthoods to gain a higher education because of the resources that are offered. As a result, poor socioeconomic areas remain the same over time because of the lack of resources introduced into the area.

Many studies have shown that adolescents residing in low income or high crime neighborhoods are more likely to get involved with deviant behavior or committing criminal acts. (Deutsch, 2012) There are several neighborhood factors that affect the crime rates of the neighborhood such as overcrowding, low economic status, the neighborhood’s reputation and its residential instability. These may create a disorganized community, leading to distrust and cynicism among residents in the community. As a result, there would be a higher rate of opportunities for crimes and delinquency. (Kurlychek, 2011) Thus high rates of crimes and violence are more likely to occur at these areas.
As Rosa Parks said, “As Americans, we still have many challenges to face and many more problems to overcome,”. One of those problems is segregation, which is the action of setting someone/something apart from others. Ghettos have played a major role in helping achieve segregation by separating the minorities from the majority; thus, making it hard for social mobility and equal opportunities for all. Ghettos first started with Jewish people and now have evolved into urban ghettos housing many minorities. This has lead to a rift between certain ethnicities. Not to mention that ghettos are always overcrowded and impoverished, causing the people who live there to fight amongst themselves.
It says in Brookings’ article “Rich Neighborhood, Poor Neighborhood: How Segregation Threatens Social Mobility,” it states, “In a report produced for the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Economic Mobility Project, Bryan Graham and I find that in urban areas with higher levels of income segregation, there is less economic mobility.” Research has been done on how segregation affects social mobility and it is not a positive effect. Since this states that in higher levels of income segregation there is less economic mobility, more segregation occurs in these areas and it is easier to classify the rich from the poor. This means that ist is difficult more the wealthy to make connections with other people in their community. Although living in a rich neighborhood may have some relationship issues, there are also cons when living in poor neighborhoods which segregation has a role in. It says in the article, “In an economical segregated city, growing up in poverty means living in a neighborhood that offers lower quality schools, fewer economic opportunities, and more violence. On September 9th, 2017 at approximately 7 p.m., I went to Gracedale Public Park to carefully conduct my observation on the individuals, who were at the park and their specific activities in the one hour of time. When I got there, the weather was beautiful with soft winds, a clear sky and with some dim sunlight. The park was full of people of all ages. Though, there were more kids than adults and some teenagers. There were many bicycles and strollers parked beside the tree I sat under. After a couple of minutes, the park filled up with more and more individuals and everyone seemed busy doing their own actions.
If a child is raised in a good neighborhood they are likely to be raised well. Children in a good environment are likely to have a better attitude and behavior. Especially when it comes to schooling. They will do well in school and those school systems are likely to have a higher rate of graduating children and children who actually take their education seriously. Better neighborhoods are known to lead to higher test scores. Making sure that a child has a safe, clean, peaceful and comforting environment is necessary and important for your child’s development. I believe that parents play a vital role in influencing children during the development process as they create a lasting impact on the child’s overall development as well as on the socialization development. As children grow, they encompass a number of factors influencing their attitudes along with the behavior of that child. These attitudes and characteristics are learned initially from their parents. I also believe that when we are in middle school is when we want to be different to fit in with our peers. We see our peers and believe that the things they are doing are cool; we also want them to like us so we start to do the same things as them, which shows then that friends start to influence us more than adults.
The previous unit pointed out that there are different concepts of what incorporates and gives rise to informality. AlSayyad (2003:23), defined urban informality as a sequence of informal socio-economic processes that shape the formal urban setting into informal urban environment that would cater for some people to be part of the formal urban setup (AlSayyad, 2003). As mentioned earlier, there are various reasons that pulls people to cities but the significant reason being socio-economic related; however, those urban promises are not always achieved since the cities can’t always cope with the influx of people who move there, thus resulting in urban poverty, homelessness and lead to urban informality. For the purpose of this exercise it will be useful to examine the urban informality in terms of activities/concepts that contribute/underlying to it and analyze each activity as below;
