A social problem that I believe exists in my community is social bullying. This topic has been talked about all over the world and it’s been happening in communities everywhere and over the last several years it has become an epidemic. Social Bullying involves hurting someone’s relationships and also their reputation. Bullying is aggressive and unwanted behavior that forces someone to do what one wants by intimidating or using strength to scare someone. Bullying can happen anywhere, any place and anytime. I thought this would be the perfect setting to observe bullying unfortunately. As I drove up to the school I was a little nervous only because I knew I was about to witness some form of bullying during my time spent there. Over the last couple years my daughter has told me several different stories about kids who were bullied in her school and to say the least I was simply shocked. I arrived at the high school around 10:30 a.m. just in time for the first lunch period that was about to begin. I took a seat at one of the tables in the corner trying not to draw attention to myself because I did not want any of the kids acting different or trying to behave better because there was somebody unfamiliar in the lunch room. As the teenagers started filing in the lunch room it took mere seconds before a group of teenage girls started verbally attacking another teenage girl. I was horrified and shocked at the filthy, vulgar comments that were just spewing from their mouths. The girl they were attacking was shorter than the other girls and had some extra weight on her and the way she carried herself screamed that she was insecure. She walked with her head down and was walking pretty slow while the whole time I was looking at her she looked frightened, scared, and simply just lost in a big crowd of crazy, unruly, loud teenagers who just passed her by. It is an epidemic at magnified proportions. Every time you turn on the news you hear of another child who took their own life because they we’re bullied every day and for no real reason other than they look, dressed or liked a different sex and other kids simply did not agree with their choices. There needs to be a zero tolerance policy put into place at every school so bullies will receive a harsh punishment for hurting others. My daughter’s high school has a zero tolerance policy and this is just one step taken but so many more steps need to be taken in order to get this growing social problem under control so children can be who they want to be and not fear rejection, torture, humiliation, and harsh words for being
