Bullying has serious short-term and long-term effects on persons physical and mental health. When it comes to bullying, there are three types of individuals. The bully, the victim, and the bully-victim. The bully is the person who is mistreating others by singling them out. The victim is the person on the receiving end of the mistreatment. The bully-victim is the person who is experiencing both ends of the equation. Many people falsely believe that bullying does not harm kids and it just a “regular” part of growing up. But it does, and there are many long-term effects that come from someone being bullied. A victim of bullying is more likely to develop psychiatric illnesses, can be diagnosed with a serious illness, are more likely to smoke cigarettes, become an alcoholic and abuse substances. They also tend to have difficulty maintaining long term relationships. Bullying is classified as intentional behavior that is harmful and that occurs repeatedly over time. It is described by an imbalance of power and it has continuos effects on whoever the victim is. Bullying can come in four different forms. The four types of bullying include: verbal, social, physical or cyber bullying. Verbal bullying includes but is not limited to, name calling and teasing. Social bullying is spreading rumors, ignoring people and leaving them out purposely, and breaking up friendships, “just because.” Physical bullying includes but is not limited to, punching, hitting, kicking or shoving someone. Cyber bullying is using the Internet, a cellphone, an iPad, or any other electronic devices as your shield in order to deliberately cause harm to others.
What is Bullying? Bullying is an act in which a person, commonly known as a bully, uses force to threaten and dominate others especially those who are weaker and less powerful than they are. In our world today, bullying is rampant especially in schools, in working areas, in the internet, and even in one’s own household. It is an act in which many people, mostly those who are seen as weak and unable to defend themselves, suffer a lot by those so called bullies. It ruins the life of the victim of bullying. Some people may even go to the extent of killing himself/herself just to escape such harshness. Although some can stand up for themselves with such belittling and over empowerment of someone else towards them, some just give up and face day-to-day the punishment which they never deserve. In school, there are many types of people that you will meet. One of those people or a couple of them may be bullies who like to hurt people maybe not always physically but also mentally and emotionally. The officers at school, mostly composed of those who are in the student government, and even those in the members of the faculty just don’t mind such act, and go with their day knowing that they can do something to help that victim of bullying.
Bullying is a problem that thousands of children suffer from year after year. According to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, “bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose” (U.S Department of Health & Human Services. n.d, p. 1). Bullying is an issue that has been around for centuries. Although it has been an issue for centuries, it has not been till recently that it has become a huge problem. Bullying is an issue that people should be concerned about. It is an issue that people
Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:
According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying. Bullying is when a person is picked on over and over again by an individual or group with more power, either in terms of physical or social standing (Young). For example, bullying can be physical: punching, beating, kicking, or punching; verbal: teasing, calling names, or insulting another person with physical harm, or spreading rumors or untrue statements about another person; rational: refusing to talk to someone or making them feel left out. Unfortunately, bullying is something that most kids will experience in their lives, whether it is because they are a bully, they are the victim of a bully or they witness bullying in some form. The effects of bullying are long-lasting and devastating in so many ways. As a result of bullying, kids and teens are suffering from depression, low self esteem, and suicide/suicidal thoughts everyday.
Bullying hurts the person being bullied in tremendous ways ("Bullying"). Children that are bullied sometimes feel hated, unimportant, and terrified ("Bullying"). Children that are bullied wake up everyday knowing that the bullies are waiting to torture, embarrass, and hurt them (Wright). More than 43 percent of middle-school and high-school students avoid using school bathrooms because they are scared of being messed with or hurt (Havenrich). Kids who are bullied can gain physical symptoms like headaches, stomach pains or sleeping problems (“What Effects”). Some kids are physically injured and they are left with bruises, black eyes, broken bones, internal injuries, scarring, damaged testicles, kidneys, and blinded in one of their eyes (Wright). They sometimes lose confidence or hope in themselves (“What Effects”). Bullying can cause kids to have mental, physical, and social problems. Children that are bullied are more capab...

Ever wonder what causes bullying? Where it comes from and the damage it does to children? Well in this day and age bullying is a big problem to kids from elementary to high school. Many people might not know that even though bullying happens to some kids early on, they carry it on throughout their entire lives. This is why it is important to stop any act of bullying before it goes too far.
Have you ever been bullied, or felt the substantial effects bullying has on its victims? Bullying is not only a problem for children and teenagers, but it affects people of all ages. Bullying is a major social dilemma in society today. Many people believe that bullying is simply part of growing up, and that it is a phase that some individuals go through. I personally believe that there should be zero tolerance for bullying. Despite all of the anti-bullying research, programs, and campaigns, bullying still exists and is not being addressed to the extent necessary to stop and prevent it.
Bullying is something that is not something new and is actually something that society continues to face. Over the years, bullying has been looked at as being so ordinary in schools that it is continuously overlooked as an emanate threat to students and has been lowered to a belief that bullying is a part of the developmental stage that most young children will experience then overcome (Allebeck, 2005, p. 129). Not everyone gets over the extreme hurt that can come as an effect from bullying, for both the bully and the victim. Because of this, we now see bullying affecting places such as the workplace, social events and even the home. The issue of bullying is not only experienced in schools, but the school environment is one of the best places
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. I have been bullied before and I know some of the effects it could have on a person. Bullying is a serious cause of many issues and has effects that may be long lasting.
