Bullying has always been a problem within the past century and has become an epidemic. However, because of social media people are becoming more aware of the issues associated with bullying and how it has become a trend in today’s society. You turn on the news and you are hearing about kids being bullied and the end result is suicide. Bullying is occurring worldwide. Not only is it happening in our schools and social networks, but also in the work place. The various types of bullying that exist and the attempt to entirely eliminate them is not achievable because of individual and environmental factors.
Human nature will never change. You can observe children and create guidelines to reduce bullying, but there will always be egotistical, hostile individuals in society. It is a vicious cycle that cannot be broken because victims do not take a stand due to fear, retaliation, and consequences. Bullies rarely get caught, and when they do, they blame the victim, therefore, the victim usually gets the punishment for retaliation. This only shows that our enforcement system is not working. Society will not stand up against bullying because most people do not care as long as it is not affecting them or choose to look the other way. Because our current system is not working, bullying victims are feeling trapped in a world of hopelessness.
In a CNN study by Chuck Hadad he states “That bullying is pervasive even though the schools have anti-bullying programs from kindergarten through 12th grade, assemblies throughout the year, and a peer-to-peer program where older students talk to younger students about the dangers of bullying” (Hadad). Even though I work in a school district where we are expected to watch videos on bullying annually, this series was eye opening to the real problem of bullying. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development three out of ten children are a bully, victim, or both. Another statistic from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development reveals that 3.2 million youth are bullied and 3.7 million youth are the bullies. These statistics are staggering. Now imagine, the News without the coverage that involves bullying. Unfortunately this is hard to do because incidents that involve bullying fill the News. Bullying happens in homes, in schools, at work, in the military; and just about everywhere else. Bullying has been around for decades and yet it is still a reoccurring problem, and it is only getting worse. The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. Eight years earlier, only 14 percent of that population said they had experienced bullying(Ollove,2014). To sum it up, bullies are actually the victims. Victims of their own closed mind and intellectual backwardness. Due to their faulty family backgrounds, intellectual deficit and pressure by peers, they do not know how to act and deal with situations they happen to find themselves in, and because of that, they will try to attract attention by bullying others. To prevent bullying in society, firstly we must raise the awareness of effects of bullying, only after then we can start treating the society, step by step. Also encouraging people to report bullying to supervisors and punish supervisors if they will act reluctantly. Furthermore, if anybody will stand up for bullied one, the bully will have to back down. If we should simplify it, the only thing keeping bullying happening is fear and laziness.
When was the last time you’ve seen somebody get bullied, in real life or in the media? Chances are, you’ve probably seen this situation many times. Bullies are running a rampage across america, frightening the youth of the country. Some people bully because of past trauma in their life, some have trouble socializing, and others are just plain rude. Bullies need to be stopped as soon as possible. Jared Hoffman’s idea is to encourage kids to tell an adult if they are being bullied and to confront the one being bullied. We agree with Jared Hoffman’s perspective on bullying because he believes that bullies should be dealt with in way that helps both the bullies and the ones being bullied, and here are some reasons why.
Bullying has always been a part of our childhood. It has been around in schools for a very long time. Some people actually see it as a positive act to aid in growth and development. However, due to changes in technology, bullying has increased and intensified in today’s society than it has ever been before.
Bullying is becoming an epidemic throughout the world and has started to become a big problem. Not enough people are taking into attention the affects bullying has on people. Many people have hurt themselves and some have even killed themselves because of it. Bullying is such a tough subject theirs so much more than a person bullying another person. Bullying has always been present within the United States. Although the issue has been around for a long time, it continues to grow and become more of problem. It is said that about 160,000 children within the United States are refusing to go to school because of bullying. Another statistic is that within American schools alone, there are an estimated 2.1 billion bullies and 2.7 billion victims (Dan Olewus, MBNBD). The numbers presented here are outrageous and although there are organizations to stop bullying, obviously there needs to be a new set of solutions. Any type of bullying presents problems to children, “Suicide, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trouble with the law, poor performance in school and work, and lack of involvement in socially accepted activities are some of the difficulties resulting from bullying (Austin, Reynolds, Barnes, Shirley). Of course, there is more than just a single type of bullying. Feeding ground for bullies can range anywhere from text-message or cyberbullying to physical bullying in schools. Also, bullies can begin to strike at a young age and could also be; teenage, middle-age, or even the elderly. Even though there are these many versions of problematic bullies, the largest bullying problems take place within the school setting: a place that is supposed to be safe for children rather than harmful. Although it seems impossible to completely get rid of bullying, these are a few suggested solutions; making the school informed on bullying issues, schools implementing rules on bullying, and having students positively use electronics to stop bullying.
Bullying is something that is not something new and is actually something that society continues to face. Over the years, bullying has been looked at as being so ordinary in schools that it is continuously overlooked as an emanate threat to students and has been lowered to a belief that bullying is a part of the developmental stage that most young children will experience then overcome (Allebeck, 2005, p. 129). Not everyone gets over the extreme hurt that can come as an effect from bullying, for both the bully and the victim.
