How Filters Speak to the Differences Between Snapchat and Instagram
When we compare different social media channels, we will often compare them on the basis of their content and their functionality. We think of Instagram as the ‘photo’ social network for instance, Pinterest is the ‘mood board’ social network and Facebook is something you use primarily for chatting with friends you know in the real-world.
That’s one way to look at social networks. But another way is to think about them in terms of mood, tone and demographic. Because in many ways, the same functionality can exist between multiple platforms. You can send a photo to friend via Instagram instant for example and both Facebook and Periscope have live streaming. But invariably, they’re

This tool allows users to send photos directly to friends and family and of course that could be seen as being ‘inspired’ by Snapchat at the very least.
But it seems that Snapchat has returned that favour with its choice of vernacular in recent. The fact that Snapchat has introduced ‘Filters’ is likely no coincidence!
But the two sets of filters are very different in form and function. On Instagram, the filters are designed to make your pictures appear more attractive and more arty. You can make a photo black and white, sepia or over-developed. In doing so, you can make something mundane like a cup-of-coffee look like something from a French art-house movie.
Conversely though, Snapchat’s filters make things less attractive. These filters give you a strangely shaped head, googly eyes, or a long tongue. The idea is to make people laugh and not to create any kind of art.
What This Tells Us About the Platforms
This tells us a lot about Snap Chat right away. Snap Chat’s photos are designed to be disposable and this means the tool is not designed for creating art. In turn, this means that people are much more likely to use Snapchat for communication and for more ‘throw-away’ chats. In the New York Times article “My Selfie, Myself,” Jenna Wortham explains that the selfie is a more effective expression of feeling than text alone. Social media is a big factor with selfies, without it there would be no way of sending others your selfie. Selfies are what helps a person look at how people see them. It lets others know how that person is feeling and what they're experiencing. In addition, Selfies make us recognizable about a specific method of self-expression and communication that is particular in time in the sense that it could materialize only in the moment when various technologies have reached a level of accessibility and development.
With over 100 million users, 400 million snapchats sent daily, and 8,796 snapchats sent per second, Snapchat has been made into a multibillion dollar franchise. Snapchat was not meant to be turned into what it has become today. Snapchat, initially called Picaboo, was launched in Evan Spiegel’s dorm room. Spiegel started Picaboo as a school project at Stanford with his peers Robert Murphy and Reggie Brown. It was created to have the ability to send an image and have that same image permanently deleted. When Picaboo was first released it was not able to attract any users. However, today Snapchat is one of the most downloaded applications in the world.
Last with snapchat you can send something funny but not appropertet to 30 people but you don't have to show your grandma. If i took a video and you say a bad word i can send it to Ethan,Gael,Peter and Aaryn but not grandma,Unlike facebook where you put one thing on their and everyone can see it with snapchat you chose. If you want to tag someone it wont show that video to their friends. There is a thing call your story where you can post one thing and everyone can see it once.
The appreciation that they receive form others has made them more confident. In the article “Why Your Kids Love Snapchat, and Why You Should Let Them” by Rachel Simmons, it states that there is very little audience participation. In particular, there is no “like” or “heart’’ button which means that there is no way for others judge and measure our value. There was also a study that was conducted about how Snapchat may have a correlation with self-esteem. This experiment was conducted by a biological social linguistic psychologist Fem I. Nine at the University of Pennsylvania. Nine found that there were strong connections between the application Snapchat and teens self-esteem. They had over three hundred participants from middle schools, high schools, and colleges. One particular participate went into a deeper response and said, “I really feel like each one is a piece of art…that lasts for 6 seconds.” This statement implies that teens feel good about themselves when they post on Snapchat because they have taken the time to perfect the picture that they are going to
